CSR to Double Farmers’ Income
2
Farmer Income – Current Landscape
Agriculture Income is less than half of Rural Income now (39.5%)
Doubling farming household income involves multi-dimensional action
– Irrigation
– Technology upgradation
– High-value crops
– Better value chain
– Agriculture trading
The binding constraint in rural India today is adequate availability of water
The solution lies in smart irrigation techniques and water harnessing interventions
Solving the water problem enables the community to take up other issues as well
3
IWMP is a major solution for water availability
The average annual
rainfall in India is 1100mm
with great variation across
the country
But 65% rainwater
runoff goes into the
sea and India is left
with no water to use!
Large scale rainwater harvesting.
A farmer can become self-
sufficient by harnessing
even 20% rainwater
entering his field
The Obvious Solution?
This is the goal of the Integrated
Watershed Management Program.
4
Adoption of micro-irrigation helps immensely
80% of fresh water is used for irrigation of crops
The effectiveness of the water used for irrigation is dismal
Micro-irrigation helps save 30 – 40% of the water for irrigation
It thus reduces 25 – 30% of fresh water demand
It also helps increase crop productivity
