We live in a selfish societ y among self-cent ered people, children and yout h. What a

t remendous challenge lies before us

Christ ian parent s t o guard our children

from t he leaven of selfishness. This quar-

t er, as we wat ch our Saviour working unt ir-

ingly for ot hers, let us lift t he eyes of our

children from t hemselves t o t he unselfish

life of Jesus Christ .Why is it import ant for our children t o

learn t o be t hought ful of ot hers, and for-

get ful of self? Love, t he basis of creat ion

and of redempt ion, is t he basis of t rue edu-

cat ion. Counsels t o Parent s, Teachers and

St udent s, p. 32. The law of love calls for t he

devot ion of body, mind, and soul t o t he ser-

vice of God and our fellow men. And t his

service, while making us a bless ing t o ot h-

ers, brings t he great est blessing t o our-

selves. Unselfishness underlies all t rue

development . Through unselfish service we

receive t he highest cult ure of every facult y.

Ibid. We can t ell our children t hat when

t hey learn t o be unselfish, t hey will have a

sharp mind and happy heart .

By Gods grace, let us demonst rat e t ot hem t rue, unselfish service by doing

unselfish deeds for our spouses, neighbors

and ot her church members. The best way

t o t each t hem t he meaning of t his princi-

ple, none of us livet h t o himself, and no

man diet h t o himself (Romans 14:7), is by our

example. If we do t his, God

will awaken in our children

an ambit ion t o cheerfully

help t o serve ot hers.

The parent s and

t eachers who by wise

inst ruct ion, in a calm,

decided manner, accust om children t o t hink

of and care for ot hers, will help t hem t o

overcome t heir selfishness and will close

t he door against many t empt at ions. Angels

of God will cooperat e wit h t hese fait hful

inst ruct ors. Angels are not commissioned

t o do t his work t hemselves; but t hey will

give st rengt h and eff iciency t o t hose who, in

t he fear of God, seek t o t rain t he young t o

ishness in part icular, a sharp mind and

happiness, are some of t he wonderful bene-

fit s t hat we and our children can reap as

t hey learn t o die t o self and live for Jesus

Jesus Reads t he Heart

Do you know why t his brot her came t o see Jesus? His f at her

had died and had left him and his brot her t he house and somemoney. We call t his an inherit ance. In Jewish families, t he oldestboy received t wo t imes more of his fat hers inherit ance t han hisyounger brot hers. The brot her who came t o Jesus felt t hat it wasnot fair t hat his older brot her should get more of his f at hersmoney and land. He had seen how t he people always list ened t oJesus. Maybe, he t hought t o himself, Jesus can t alk t o myolder brot her and he will list en also.

Jesus could read t he mind of t his selfish young man. Alt hough

Jesus had t alked t o him about salvat ion, he had cared moreabout get t ing rich t han going t o heaven. Jesus t old him, It is notMy job t o be your judge. Be careful t hat you are not greedy. Thereare ot her t hings t hat are more import ant t han being rich andhaving lot s of land, houses, and money. Jesus could have fixedt he quarrel bet ween t he t wo brot hers, but He knew t hat bot h oft hem loved money t oo much. So He t old t his unhappy brot her, Itis not My job t o fix your quarrel. The St ory of t he Rich Farmer

A long t ime ago, Jesus said, t here lived a rich farmerwho had much land. He had f ruit , veget ables, and grains grow-ing on his farm. There were big barns where he st ored t he foodt hat he picked. But one year, his farm produced so much foodt hat t here was no room in his barns t o st ore it all. Whereshall I put all t his food? he wondered. The rich farmer becameproud, and he said t o himself, I must have more room for allt his food. If I st ore all t his wheat , I will be richer t han everbefore. I will t ear down my old barns and build new, larger ones.In t hem I will put all my crops and my farm t ools. Then I wont

have t o work for many years. I will be able t o rest and haveplent y t o eat and drink. Best of all, I will do as I please andhave a good t ime for many years t o come.

As t he rich farmer was making t hese selfish plans, some-one was wat ching him. God in heaven could see t he largefields of wheat , t he fruit and t he vineyards. Each day Godhad lovingly sent t he sunshine t o shineon his farm. He had sent rain fromheaven t o wat er his vineyards,orchards, and gardens. Who do yout hink gave t he farmer t he st rengt ht o work in his garden every day?God did. If God did not give himt he sunshine, rain and st rengt h t owork, he would have no farm. Notonce did t he farmer t hank God forall t hese wonderful gif t s. How sadGod was t hat t he farmer f orgotall about Him and act ed as if

everyt hing was his own!

The Homeless Mot hers and Children

Did you ever go t o t he cit y and see homeless mot hers wit hchildren walking around t he st reet s? They carry all t heir belong-ings in a few bags or push t hem in a grocery cart . Somet imest hey st and in front of a supermarket and hold a sign t hat saysNeed Food. We are sad t o see poor, hungry children, so we liket o buy t hem some food or give t hem some money. This r ichfarmer had also seen poor and homeless children. He knew t hatsome of t hem had no fat hers and t hat t heir mot hers couldntmake much money, but he did not care t o help t hem. These poorpeople had asked him for help, but he would not list en t o t heir

cry. Since he had so much, he could have easily given t hemfood for t heir hungry st omachs and clot hest o wear. How good he would have felt t o seet heir happy faces, praising God for his kind-

ness. But t he farmer had closed his ears t ot heir cr ies, and said t o himself, Now youhave much food and money saved up formany years, t ake it easy eat , drink, andhave a good t ime.

As God looked at t he selfish far mer, Hesaw t hat He would always be selfish. Hewould never be a help t o anyone in t he world,so He said t o him, You are a foolish man.Tonight you are going t o die. Then who willhave your riches? Af t er Jesus t old t hisst ory, He t urned t o t he people and said,This will happen t o everyone who want s t obe rich in t his world and not rich t owardGod.

You Can Be Rich

Did you ever wish t hat your fat her and mot her were rich

and had a lot of money? Maybe you have wished t o live in a bighouse wit h ponies and lot s of t oys. Some boys and girls t hinkt hat if t hey could go t o t he st ore and buy anyt hing t hey like,t hey would be so happy. But let me t ell you a secret , boys andgirls. A big house wit h nice furnit ure and lot s of t oys wouldnot make you happy. The love of J esus in our heart s is t he onlyt hing t hat can make us t ruly happy. Wit h Jesus in our heart s,we will love t o share what we have wit h ot hers. Then, if Jesusgives us money, we will use it t o help t he poor and t he sick,

and also t o send missionaries t o China, Afr ica, and aroundt he world.

How sad it is t hat some Christ ian moms and dads lovemoney more t han Jesus. They work hard because t hey want t obe rich. Somet imes t hey have no t ime t o go t o prayer meet ingand church. How do you t hink Jesus feels about t hat ? Yes, Heis very sad. He does not want anyone t o love money so mucht hat t hey will forget about Him. To t each us not t o love money,Jesus gave us t he st ory of t he rich, foolish farmer. Here aresome neat ways t hat you and your family can be rich: Be r ichin lit t le act s of kindness, lit t le words of love, lit t le smiles t hatbring sunshine t o ot hers, and t hen you will be t he happiest boyor girl in your neighborhood.

Made to LastSharon is so lucky, Nick t hought , as he plopped down on t he

front st eps of his house. He sighed as he st ret ched his legs out infront of him. Sharons family was wealt hy, and Sharon had all sort sof neat t hings: a swimming pool, lot s of neat t oys, and even herown comput er! She bragged a lot , t hough, and swished her long,black hair around all t he t ime. And just now, Sharon had shown himt he special set of building blocks t hat he had been want ing. Lookwhat Ive got , she said smugly.

Some friend! Nick t hought . She knew hed been t rying t o gett hat set for a long t ime.

The clanging of dishes t old Nick t hat his mom was set t ing t het able for supper. He went inside. Hi, Mom, he murmured, and shelooked up. It s not fair, complained Nick. Sharon get s everyt hingshe want s. She even get s everyt hing I want . It s so upset t ing. Shehas so many special t hings. That s OK, but she doesnt have t owave it in front of my face!

Sharon does seem t o have a lot of special t reasures, agreedMom, but will any of t hem last very long? Nick shrugged. Doesshe have any t reasures in heaven t hat cant be t aken away orst olen? cont inued Mom.

Nick knew t hat all t he t hings t hat Sharon possessed would getlost , st olen, broken, or worn out including t he building blocks. Youknow, Im not sure Sharon even knows about heavenly t reasures, hesaid.

She could, suggest ed Mom.Nick smiled. He could hear Sharon calling him. Yeah, he

agreed, like right now.Many people st ore up t reasures on t his eart h. Bugs and mice

chew holes in clot hes, books, and plent y of ot her t hings. Firesdest roy many homes every year, and t he people in t hose homes

somet imes lose everyt hing t hey have. There are also burglars whorob t hem when t hey arent aware, and rust and decay do t heir partalso.

Jesus t aught t hat we should lay up t reasure in heaven wherenot hing can harm it . You might ask, How can I lay up t reasure inheaven? By giving your heart t o Jesus, and learning not t o be self-ish. Everyt hing you do for someone else, it is as if you have done itfor Jesus.

But lay upfor yourselvest reasures inheaven, whereneither mot hnor rust dot hcorrupt , andwhere t hievesdo not breakt hrough nor

When Jesus lived ont his eart h, anyone could just walk up t o Him and ask Him what -ever he or she liked. One day, while Jesus was t eaching t he peo-ple, a lawyer came t o ask Him a very import ant quest ion. Jesus,he said, what do I have t o do t o be saved? This man honest ly

want ed t o know what he must do t o go t o heaven.Jesus asked him, What do you read in t he commandment s?

The man answered, You should love t he Lord your God wit h allyour heart and wit h all your soul, wit h all your st rengt h, wit h allyour mind, and your neighbor as t hyself. The pale face of t he wicked boy filled t he boyswit h horror, and in perfect silence t hey carried him t o t he house of t hepoor, old lady which was nearby. She had also seen him fall.

Now t he boy who had made fun of her, was lying on her own bed. Sheprayed for him while t enderly minist ering t o him. Soon t he doct or arrived,and did what he could.

When poor Billy woke up at last , he was t old t hat his back was broken.When he was well enough, he begged for t he poor, old ladys forgiveness,which she gladly gave. But forever af t er, he always had a hunched back.

These were t he words of t he Bible verse t hat Dannys Sabbat hschool t eacher gave him one day. As soon as she read t hem t o him andhis f riends, he said, I like t his verse. My daddys a bread man and hekeeps people from get t ing hungry. Danny could hardly wait t o t alk t o hisfat her aft er Sabbat h school, t o show him his new verse.

That s what you do, dont you, Daddy? asked Danny aft er his fat herhad looked at t he verse.

Well t alk about it when we get home, Danny, his fat her said. It st ime for service t o st art now. Our Lost World

What did t he shepherd do wit h t he sheep t hat caused him

so much t rouble? He did not scold it . No, he did not whip it . Hedid not even t ry t o lead it home. Lovingly, but gent ly he pickedup t he t rembling sheep. Pressing it close t o his heart , he kept itwarm and so carr ied it home. Alt hough t he road was rough andt he night was dark and st ormy, t he shepherd was happy, for hehad found his lost sheep. Do you know who is t he shepherd? Who are t he 99 sheep,

and who is t he one lost sheep? Jesus is t he Good Shepherdwho had many worlds in heaven. One of t hese worlds was ourworld. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, our world becamelost like t he sheep in t he st ory. So, Jesus left His ninet y andnine perfect worlds t hat have never sinned. He left His perfecthome in heaven, and came t o t his s inful eart h t o t ake t hepunishment for all t hose t imes we have gone our own way. Hecame t o save us f rom t he pit of s in. The Bible says, All we likesheep have gone ast ray; we have t urned, every one t o his ownway. You and I have gone our own way by doing wrong t hings,by being selfish, impat ient and unkind.
