A new quarter and just anotherreason for a new edition of

CableTalk!Putting together this editionwas a real challenge giventhe quantum of events thathave unfolded, not onlyat Ducab but the worldaround us. Adding to our

It is exciting enough to have participated in exhibitionsin Bahrain and Qatar for the first time but it only getsbetter knowing that the feedback we received washighly encouraging - both for us and our JV partners.

Furthermore, the local markets there have welcomed uswith open arms.

Cable tonnes output and sales orders are not the onlyactivities that have kept us busy. Not surprisingly, thespirit of team building seems to grow and prosper further

also helped us bond with our key customers such asETA, NASA Multiplex, BILT ME etc. Such tournamentsare not only a great way to enhance personal interactionwith our customers; it’s also really interesting to deal withthem both - on and off the field! We are introducing theMarket Pulse column in this issue. It aims to give regularinsights on various aspects of the economy. We beginwith the construction sector, which industry expertspredict will see consolidation and lay greater emphasison the infrastructure projects.

As we draw closer to our 30th Anniversary it will be a

pleasure to highlight our celebrations in subsequenteditions of CableTalk. We received overwhelmingresponse to the 30 Years Anniversary - logo designcompetition and I sincerely thank each and everyonewho participated in the competition; the winner will beannounced shortly.

Excellence led by employee commitment

A s the old adage goes, when the times get tough, the tough get going.

Faced with unprecedented challenges in local and world markets,

now is the time for businesses to be tough, to prove their resilience

and demonstrate their strengths.

Ducab is one of those businesses and we believe that addressing the reality

of the current situation is the only way forward. Markets have changed and

we must respond to maintain our leadership with better service, innovative

ideas to support our customers and more ef ficient use of our resources. We

are fortunate in these times that we have a large base of high quality and

resilient customers with whom we work closely.

Despite the recent changes in the local markets we are still confident of

growth for the company and indeed, the economic turmoil is presenting

additional opportunities.

In the MENA region Ducab is aggressively expanding its regional salesnetwork; offering support to our existing customers and introducing our

brand to new markets. There is competition wherever we go but we are confident that our traditional strengths of

quality, service and value will be appreciated in these markets.

Closer to home we recently launched one of our most ambitious and exciting expansion programmes in partnership

with DEWA and ADWEA - Ducab HV.

The new AED 500 million Ducab HV factory, already under construction near the head-quarters in Jebel Ali, will take

us into the most demanding high technology areas of energy cable manufacturing. The new JV plant will be one of

the few purpose-built EHV facilities worldwide and will certainly be one of the most modern and up to date.

Manufacturing cables up to 400kV, this new business gives Ducab people an opportunity to upgrade their skills and

knowledge and build yet another new capability in the UAE’s industrial base.

Our focus on internal ef ficiency and excellence is also showing results in different ways. Continual Improvement calls

for the active involvement of every employee at all levels in the company. The enthusiastic response to the Ducab

Suggest “cost saving month” in February highlights this commitment and the insightful and practical thinking that is

so valuable for the growth of the organisation.

It is this commitment and passion of Ducab employees that is the driving force for “Business Excellence”. It is a great

honour this passion has been recognised with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Business Award 2008 in the

Manufacturing Category, presented to us in April 2009.

Our cover story features this prestigious award and I am proud to take this opportunity to thank all Ducab staff,

customers and stakeholders; it is your support that has helped us earn this honour.

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Business Award and the investment in Ducab HV are indeed the latest

milestones in Ducab’s part in the growth story of the UAE; investing in people, knowledge and the country’s

infrastructure.

 Thank you all

Best regards

Ducab is the first UAE cable company to receive ISO 9001 Quality Management System Certification.

In line with Ducab’s strategy to reach out to new

geographic markets through strategic marketing

initiatives, the company participated in the 7th Doha

Natural Gas Conference and Exhibitions (DNGCE), heldin the Qatari capital from March 9-12, 2009.

The participation marked an increased focus of Ducab

outside the home market addressing the OGP segment.

The company was one of the 60 plus exhibitors from

over 20 countries at the expo held at the Doha Exhibition

Centre.

The DNGCE offered the opportunity to familiarize with the

latest trends in the OGP market and network with the

local stakeholders.

Hamad Al-Attiyah, Deputy Prime Minister of Qatar and

Minister of Energy & Industry. Representatives from

multinational OGP companies, government of ficials,

financiers, media and other service providers attended

this event.

A large number of OGP consultants and contractors

visited the Ducab stand. Furthermore, several key clients

from the OGP and Utilities sectors were identified and

the exhibition is expected to help the company establishstrong partnerships in Qatar.

Ducab was in the limelight at WETEX 2009,organised by Dubai Electricity & Water Authority

(DEWA). The three day annual regional event held

from March 29 to 31, highlighted the achievements in

water, energy and environment sectors. Ducab used this

Ducab is the first power cable manufacturing company in the UAE to

receive the Emirates Quality Mark Award.

Ducab participates in Career Fair 2009

With national development initiatives in the

forefront, Ducab always played a key role in

identifying, recruiting, nurturing and supporting

the UAE national workforce.

This was further reiterated with its participation in the

Careers UAE held from March 29 to 31, 2009 at the

Dubai International Convention Centre. H.H. Sheikh

Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of

Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance, inaugurated the

programme to the youngsters and gave a preview to the

various training and retention strategies on the spot.

Interviews were conducted with potential candidates to

assess their expectations and share what Ducab has to

offer. The company also leveraged public participation

at the event by highlighting its core competencies in the

cable industry.

Ducab achieved a remarkable 100% increase in the UAE

national workforce after its participation at the fair last

year.

All the UAE nationals at Ducab are given the opportunity

to undergo training programmes in relevant areas to

establish a clear career path for professional and personal

advancement.

Ducab was the Gold Sponsor at the British

Business Group (BBG) Annual Golf Day on 12th

March 2009 and had two participating teams -

the first led by Walter Bailey with K V Ramaseshan, Dennis

King and Jagdish Shah while the other team consisted of

Jon Vail, Brett Bass, Paul Greenacre and Alan Feasby.

There was much excitement in store as the two teams

clashed with some of the titans in the game from the city’s

amateur circuit. The

team led by Jon Vail

came third in the

entire event in which

170 golfers took

part.

While a passion for

golf was the binding

force of the day,

the tournament

also saw a lot of

networking among

the participants and

visitors.

A celebratory evening barbeque dinner was held following

the event attended by Mr. Andrew Shaw and his wife. They

were proud to present the BBG Ducab Golf Trophy to the

member with highest Stableford points score. Individual

Ducab cables are making a mark everywhere.

While the bright orange Ducab cable drums are a common sight in the UAE, it’s presence was also noted in a remotetown in Afghanistan.

T he energy landscape of the Arab world and the

investments planned in the power sector were the

highlights of the Arabian Power & Water Summit

organized by MEED.

Ducab participated in the event as a Gold Sponsor to the

Summit held on March 30 & 31, 2009 at the Emirates

Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi.

H.E. Abdulla Saif Al Nuaimi, Director of Privatization, Abu

Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA), delivered the

key note address. More than 400 delegates attended the

Summit where 58 leading industry speakers discussed

various topics related to power and water. These included

Sustainable Business Development; Ef ficient Power for

Urban Development; Privatisation as an answer to Energy

Shortage; Raising Finance; Desalination and Alternative

Energies and Customer Focus.

Graham Cheetham, General Manager Manufacturing,

represented Ducab in a contractor discussion panel where

he highlighted Ducab’s commitment to investment for the

future with the new Ducab HV plant; a joint venture with

DEWA and ADWEA. Ducab HV will reduce the country’s

dependence on imports of high voltage cables and alsoprovide more than 100 job opportunities.

According to research by MEED, more than US$50 billion

(AED183 billion) will be invested in the power sector in

the Gulf countries in the next seven years in which the

UAE alone with invest US$18 billion (AED66 billion). The

projected demand for additional capacity in the GCC

is 57,000 megawatts (MW) in the next seven years

and of which 35% is UAE’s demand. This high volume

of investments is to meet the projected demand for an

additional capacity of power by the GCC region in sevenyears. The UAE will need an additional 20,000 MW.

With this forecast, it clearly indicates the towering

importance of power and water in the years to come.

winners to the economy.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed has been an ardent

advocate on the need to diversify the economy and

focus on the growth of the manufacturing sector.

His commitment to quality and business excellence

is legendary and is an inspiration for the business

community.

It is therefore with a great sense of pride that Ducab

received the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum

Business Award.

Mr. Ahmad bin Hassan Al Shaikh said: “It is an

honor to accept this award for Manufacturing and

to be recognized for our contribution to the UAE.

It is a testament to the hard work and dedication

of our employees and the support of Sheikh

Mohammed.’’

His Excellency Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri,

Minister of Economy and chairman of the awards

jury, said, “The winners would be an example for

others to follow as the participating companies will

get accurate evaluation and feedback report on theirperformance and achievements and can come back

for the award’s next session with renewed ability

and zeal of competition.”

Out of the nine categories -

manufacturing, finance, re-export, real

estate, corporate social responsibility,

construction, supply chain and logistics

Ducab won the award along with

Dubai Aluminium Company and AlKhaleej Sugar for their business

achievements in the manufacturing

sector. In all 18 winners were

adjudged from 234 participanting

companies representing various cross-sections of

the economy.

 Assessment Criteria

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Business

Awards are presented on the basis of a stringent

evaluation process that takes into consideration

several management and performance criteria. Five

elements are considered – leadership perspectives,

strategic initiatives, quality imperatives, corporate

culture and corporate social responsibility.

The performance criteria include the output and

the outcome which reflects the achievements

implemented by the establishment, and the impact

of the firm through its contribution towards the nation

and society.

Ducab’s leading-edge:

For Ducab, winning the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al

Maktoum Award in the Manufacturing Category

comes from years of commitment to quality and

excellence. With great attention to detail, every

aspect of the company’s manufacturing process

has been streamlined, starting from the purchase of

state-of-art machinery.

Ducab has forged strong bonds with its suppliers, mostly from Europe, thus ensuring that the best and

latest equipment is made available. This relationship

n a landmark agreement signed on the sidelines

of the WETEX exhibition, the two major UAE utility

providers, ADWEA and DEWA, have joined forceswith Ducab in a new joint venture to manufacture

high voltage cable systems.

This joint venture is in line with Ducab’s commitment

to explore and identify growth opportunities and

therefore the company has joined hands with two of

the UAE’s leading utility providers – Dubai Electricity

and Water Authority (DEWA) and Abu Dhabi Water

and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) to set up this

manufacturing facility.

Ducab will hold a 50 per cent share while DEWA and

ADWEA, will each have 25 per cent stake in the new

joint venture. The new company, Ducab – HV, will operate from a

22,000 square meter manufacturing factory that is

currently under construction next to Ducab’s facility

in Jebel Ali.

The announcement of Ducab – HV was at a press

conference at WETEX exhibition, Dubai on 30th of

March 2009. It was attended by senior of ficials of

all the three companies and prominent print and

broadcast media members.

Billed to reduce the country’s dependence on

imports of high voltage cable systems that are used

in energy transmission lines, the new facility will be

operational in the last quarter of 2010 and has the

capacity to manufacture 30,000 tonnes per year of

66 to 400 kV cables.

Mr. Saeed Al Darmaki, Deputy Managing Director

of TRANSCO, a subsidiary of ADWEA, said that the

plant will play a key role in supporting the nation’s

economy and will be a milestone for the UAE

industrial sector. He said the partnership

complements Abu Dhabi Government’s Strategic

Plan to diversify the economy and create new job

opportunities for Emiratis.

His Excellency Saeed Mohd Al Tayer MD & CEO of

DEWA observed that the project is a reflection of

the UAE’s vision to grow the industrial sector and

national infrastructure.

The importance of Ducab HV was highlighted by

Ducab Chairman Mr. Ahmad bin Hassan Al-Shaikh

who said “As the population in the region continues

to grow so too does the demand for electricity and

power.” Ducab HV will support this demand in the

future.

eeping pace with the sprinting infrastructure

developments was a challenge in early 2008.

All the projects were racing to finish and the

developers and contractors along with suppliers were

booked to full capacity. It was the on-time delivery which

was the key factor to winning an order.

Fast forward to the present, and we see a lot of projects

being retendered. The credit issue surfaced around

October 2008, and then onwards projects were either put

on-hold or even cancelled.

The developers and contractors are now paying more

attention to the ‘project economics’ and are looking

at feasibility. They want to draw benefi

t from the fall of construction material prices.

A survey was conducted in a recent conference - Arab

World Construction Summit organised by MEED. The

results of which clearly indicated the tempo of the market,

87% of the participating companies had at least one

project canceled or postponed in the last 3 months, while

one third faced the same with 5 or more projects. Over

60% of the participating companies saw their ‘forward

order book’ shrink compared to the last year.

Looking within & beyond GCC

The UAE home market had a lot of projects initiated in the

period of 2007-08 which are now seeing the light of the

day. The world’s tallest tower – the Burj Dubai and the first

metro network in GCC will be inaugurated on 09/09/09.

Ducab has been involved in both of these projects with

supply of low and medium voltage cables.

The pace of the home markets is now reaching to a more

realistic level rather than the inflated growth rate. This

will encourage companies to look within and beyond the

GCC and expand their geographic reach.

The most attractive regions outside the GCC are Libya

followed by Egypt, Iraq Algeria & Morocco for the

developers and contractors.

Within the GCC, it is Saudi Arabia, Qatar and UAE with

Abu Dhabi in particular which will lead the construction

activity. Saudi Arabia has 70% of their 24.3mn population

under the age of 30 years and so their housing requirement

is huge. The incremental demand for housing is forecast

at over 1.3 million units over the next 7 years – which

requires an investment of nearly $180bn. At the same

time, Abu Dhabi is addressing the pent up demand for

housing and preparing for the expected growth in the

coming years through infrastructure development.

The emerging trend witnessed in the conference, was

the prominence of government-funded infrastructure

and building projects in the Gulf construction sector.

The regional drive to develop schools, hospitals and

affordable housing is expected to provide the strongest

opportunities in the coming year with nearly 22% saying

that the public-sector building projects would provide

the best new opportunities. This is followed by power

projects (21%), water & wastewater projects (14%), roads

& bridges projects (13%).

To capture and utilize these opportunities in this dynamic

market, companies need to be flexible with a quality &

service focus to succeed and survive.

In the endeavor to offer complete

range of cables and its accessories,Ducab set up the “Connect”

division in 1999. Ducab Connect,

a key project of Roy Heatherington,

Ducab Connect Manager, who now

leads and drives its growth.

Ducab Connect has made rapid

strides of growth since its inception.

Contributing to the overall growth

philosophy of the company, Ducab

Connect is led by two strategic drivers

– regional coverage and product

diversity.

“Connect offers a comprehensive

range of cable glands and cable

support products such as cleats and

fixings targeting the industrial market

sector. We are now penetrating utilitybusiness opportunities with our LV

and MV joints and terminations,”

says Roy Heatherington, Ducab

Connect Manager.

Ducab Connect provides the means

of jointing all types of power cables

up to 36kV. This includes a variety

of polymeric insulation materials;

typically XLPE or EPR, transition

 jointing systems which are also

available to permit the connection of

dissimilar cables commonly required

within the electrical industry.

Ducab Connect also features the

complete range of compressiontooling and associated connectors

ranging from 1.5 sq mm conductor

size through to 1000 sq mm. The

Ex range of hazardous area cable

glands are designed to the latest

international standards for increased

safety and flameproof applications. It

compliments Ducab’s cable offering

and has created an ideal platformto reach out to the oil, gas and

petrochemical sector.

Ducab Connect is led by one of the

most technically competent teams in

the region, which catalyses innovation

to meet the demanding requirements

of customers. Connect’s professional

technical support and design

service provides complete cable

system solutions and

avoids any risks

associated with

non-compatib i l i ty

of cable size and

design.

Ducab Connect adopts a ‘one-stop-

shop’ approach to service the market,an effort backed up by its extensive

range of products at the Jebel Ali

- Centre of Logistics Excellence

(C.O.L.E.) facility. The recently

revamped ‘Connect’ C.O.L.E., is

a state-of-the-art despatch hub,

ensuring timely delivery of product

to both major contractors and key

distribution partners.

Ducab realised that the primary

cause of failure of electrical cables

and faults in electrical distribution

networks is associated with joints

and terminations. To overcome this

and to offer support to its customers,

Ducab set up a modern Jointer

Academy in the year 2000. This

academy facilitates enhancement of

knowledge and upgradation of skills

in jointing and laying cables.

“At Ducab we celebrate spontaneity

and reward original thinking and thus,

we are now planning to introduce

a number of innovative products

later this year which includes a new

range of Ex cable glands, cable

management products, cable markingdevices, earthing and lightening

protection products, cable pulling

and stripping tools, that will further

enhance our product offering,” says

Heatherington.

Ducab Connect aims to

be the best and nothing

less, and uphold

its operationalphilosophy of

‘Connecting your

cables to our world.’

Connect Manager.

T he true force behind Ducab’s achievements is its

“Spirited and passionate people”. And it is thisspirit and passion that is carried out of the work

place and on to other activities – be it sports, cultural orteamwork.

Cricket has always been a popular game among staff andthe organization has always been supportive to the game– even sponsoring the Ducab Cricket Cup annually. Thisyear saw a total of 12 teams participating in four poolsincluding two from Ducab – Ducab Jebel Ali and DucabMussafah.

Eight years since our cricket team played the finals of thecorporate tournament, 2009 saw some heavy-wattagecricketing action from Ducab Jebel Ali as the teamemerged runners-up against ETA Ascon.

The opening game was a cakewalk for Jebel Ali, winning

by 74 runs. Imran was the man of the matchscoring 73 runs off just 35 balls

and bagging two wickets to

boot. Though the team

lost its second match

against Dulsco, the

high average of 10.31

runs per over took it to

the top of the league.

 Though Ducab

Mussafah could not

make it to the quarterfinals, the Jebel Ali team won

their match by an impressive 93

runs against Baker Hughes.Bharat was declared manof the match, scoring 82runs.

Semi-finals waspayback time as

Ducab Jebel Ali

clashed with KIT after

two years. KIT won the

toss and elected to bat

and were all out for 152.

Ducab’s batsmen stormed

the turf and won the match by

8 wickets with nine balls to spare.

Haji Mohammed, who scored 51 not out, was the man

of the match.

Although Ducab lost in the finals against ETA Ascon, the

team put up a brave fight. ETA’s Abdeen who scored

99 not out and hauled three of the Ducab wickets was

adjudged man of the match and man of the series. Bharat

from Ducab was selected as the best batsman of the

tournament and Vishal as the best bowler.

It was an exciting finish to a nail-biting cricket schedule,

and the runners-up trophy is an inspiration for the team

to vie for the top honours next year. Cricket is a true test

of survival of the fittest where all barriers of departments,

divisions and even organisations are forgotten, whatprevails is the spirit of sportsmanship.

“We have always been committed to

upholding the highest standards of safety

and quality across all aspects of our

operation,” said Mr. Andrew Shaw, Managing Director,

Ducab. “This has now been further acknowledged with

prestigious global certifications.”

In a strong endorsement of workplace safety and health,

Ducab has been awarded the RoSPA Occupational

Health & Safety Award for 2009. Announcing the award,

Mr. David Rawlins, RoSPA Awards Manager, said:

“Ducab has shown a commitment to protecting the

health and well-being of its employees and others.” The

RoSPA Awards ensure that winners have the best health

and safety management systems in place.

Ducab has also won “Safety at Work” award from

Dubai Municipality in 2008. Ducab’s Health and Safety

Management System is certified to British Standards

OHSAS 18001:2007.

Ducab’s adherence to the highest standards in safety of

its products was further endorsed in the results of the

BASEC UK (British Approvals Service for Cables) audit in

February.

BASEC auditor Mr. Richard Bryden completed QHSE

systems audit for all three sites and has recommended for

ISO 9001:2008 approval for Copper Rod factory and the

PVC Plant in addition to successful transition to the new

version of ISO 9001:2008 at all sites, which previouslyhave won the ISO 9001:2000 certification.

Ducab has won the Dubai Quality Award Gold Category for best UAE industry.

Caring for the environment is more than

a buzzword at Ducab – it is part of the

company’s corporate social responsibility,

and a work ethos for its employees.

Highlighting the commitment to make a meaningful

change, Ducab embarked on a green initiative to plant

more trees. Some 35 employees gathered at the Jebel

Ali facility on December 26, 2008, to plant trees around

the factory premises. This was part of the ‘Ducab

Friends of the Environment Day,’ an annual event at

the company.

The event was also a celebration of teamwork with

several employees joining hands to plant the trees,

water them and maintain the area clean.

Ducab is planning several such events in the future to

make a difference to the world.

Ducab has won the Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Gold Award for the last 18 years.

The new version of ISO 9001 was published only in

November 2008 and Ducab accomplished the transitionto the new version in a very short span of time.

At an earlier audit by BASEC held in December,

Ducab also received ISO 9001:2000 approval for the

Mussafah 2, and BASEC product approval certificate for

BS 6004 cables, covering 1.5 sq mm to 240 sq mm.

Ducab-FR SC single core cables from 16 to 630 sq mm

received LPCB UK (Loss Prevention Certification Board)

approval recently. These cables are fire resistant cables

manufactured at Ducab - Mussafah1, Abu Dhabi. With

this approval Ducab has full range of LPCB approved Fire

Resistant cables, both single core and multi core cable

which are mandatory in markets like Hong Kong. Ducab

truly commits to maintain and adhere to global quality

standards.

Upholding Ducab’s commitment to the highest

standards of safety, the company has unveiledthe Employee’s Guide to Safety at Work. The

handbook highlights the various safety standards to be

adopted at the workplace.

George Frank, Health & Safety Controller, led a series of

safety workshops at Ducab’s factories in Jebel Ali and

Mussafah 1 and 2. The focus of the workshop was to

prevent hand and finger injuries, although Ducab already

has an outstanding safety record.

Several presentations and videos showcasing safety’s

best practices in the UK were displayed to

employees. The Safety Video featured various

aspects of injury prevention

and was appreciated by

the participants.

 The workshops were

supported by safety posters

displayed at all sites and

also aimed at enhancing

shopfloor participation.

Since its launch in July 2005, the employee

suggestion scheme of the company has gained a

several hundred suggestions, wherein employees

are motivated to think innovatively and contribute toward

continuous improvement.

Through this programme, employees not only have

an impact on decision making but also aim to increase

productivity, profitability and growth of Ducab, which in

turn benefits all.

The Quality Department administers the scheme in

collaboration with individual departmental heads, who

review the suggestions and implement them when found

suitable.

From a ‘suggestion box in the corner’ to part of thecorporate ethos, Ducab Suggest now is supported by

an online system whereby electronically employees can

make their suggestions and receive prompt feedback

from the management.

To further encourage employees, Ducab Suggest put into

action a rewards system in additional to its points system.

The rewarding system presents a monetary incentive for

all valid suggestions even those that may be rejected at

a later stage. Ducab Suggest also acknowledges the

employee who leads the implementation process with the

title of “Ducab Suggest Partner”.

Suggestions are evaluated for originality, cost and

feasibility of implementation, cost savings and benefits,

ef ficiency and effectiveness, improvement in quality and

contribution towards health, safety and environmental

objectives.

Every year, Ducab Suggest implements carefully selected

ideas, In the first year, 251 suggestions were received and

50 have been implemented, while in 2007, 50% of 110

suggestions were taken through. Furthermore, in 2008

a total number of 208 suggestions were received out of

which 121 were accepted and implemented.

Start of 2009 witnessed an outbreak of suggestions of

special themes like Cost Saving in February and Customer

Service in March. This came well-tuned to the market

trends as cost saving and customer service are the key

issues.

Talk about the power of ideas, indeed!

Ducab has also achieved certification for the OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Standard.
