sprout, becoming bigger and stronger, reaching for thesky. Such has been the growth of KPJ HealthcareBerhad. From two hospitals, one each in Johor Bahruand Ipoh, KPJ Healthcare’s network now includeshospitals not only in Malaysia’s cities and towns, butalso beyond the seas. It has blossomed beautifully, making its mark on the stock exchange, adding colourto the communities it serves with better and morecomprehensive facilities and services.

In the Beginning (1981-1985)The journey of KPJ Healthcare Berhad’s (KPJ Healthcare) network of hospitals began with a dream by twodifferent groups of doctors in two different cities.

Johor Specialist Hospital

In Johor Bahru, Dato’ Dr Lim Kee Jin had the idea of setting up the first private hospital in the city. In 1974, heapproached Johor Corporation (then known as the Johor State Economic Development Corporation) to join himin this venture and had a number of discussions with Tan Sri Dato’ Basir Ismail, then the CEO of JohorCorporation. But an unexpected recession in the later part of the 1970s put the idea on hold. In 1978, with theworst of the recession over, Dato’ Dr Lim and Tan Sri Dato’ Basir revived the project. A team of specialists wasassembled and, led by Johor Corporation, the plans were put into action.

On 20 February 1979, Johor Specialist Hospital Sdn Bhd was incorporated and construction of the hospital, to becalled Johor Specialist Hospital, began in 1980.The hospital opened its doors to the public on 10 May 1981 with65 beds. It was during this same year that Tan Sri Dato’Muhammad Ali Haji Hashim joined the Board of Directors.Datin Paduka Siti Sa’diah Sheikh Bakir who was then a Director of the Company, supervised the development ofthe hospital with Dato’ Dr Lim as Medical Director and Tuan Haji Ahamad Mohamad as Administrator. Theopening of the Johor Specialist Hospital was the beginning of a continual growth in services and facilities towardsbecoming a hospital of distinction.

Reflections from the Pioneers of Johor Specialist HospitalDATO’ DR LIM KEE JINConsultant Physician"It has been a very satisfactory and rewarding experience to haveinitiated the creation of this hospital, especially in working withJohor Corporation, and tribute should be given to Tan Sri Dato’Basir Ismail who was responsible for bringing in Johor Corporationto sponsor the project."

DR V K RAVINDRANConsultant Otolaryngologist/Ear Nose & Throat Surgeon "We envisioned a hospital that could provide the best services to allcustomers at all times, a place where dedicated and illustriousdoctors … could have a conducive environment to provide ethicaland professional service."

DR ONG AH HOWConsultant Radiologist"In 1981, the Radiology Department started with two rooms doingvery basic x-rays and fluoroscopy…Over the years, the department

has grown. Back in 1981, the department handled about 10 patientsa day. Today, we average about 80-100 patients per day!"

DR MAK KOCK KHENGConsultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist"The consultants and management were committed to make thehospital a viable venture and a success… The consultants, DatinPaduka Siti Sa’diah and Encik Ahamad (the Administrator) werejointly managing the hospital. The management committee metregularly in the evenings and occasionally at night to thrash outproblems. Slowly but surely, the business grew."

DATO’ DR A R S BHATHALConsultant General Surgeon (Retired)"We, the original pioneer consultants, will always remember the care, dedication and commitment displayed by all members of the nursingand physiotherapy staff to patients under their care… The ‘torch’ hasbeen handed to the new consultants…to ensure that JSH continuesto improve and grow."

Ipoh Specialist Hospital

Up north in Ipoh, a group of private medical specialists wasdriven by a desire to develop a private hospital, owned and runby doctors. A few more specialists were invited to participate inthe venture, leading to the incorporation of Medical AssociatesSdn Bhd (MASB) on 17 May 1978. Construction work on thehospital, to be called the Ipoh Specialist Centre (now known asIpoh Specialist Hospital), began the following year and on 10 October 1981, the hospital was officially opened with 80 beds. From year to year, the hospital expanded its range of facilities andservices to place it amongst the country’s top private hospitals.

Dreams Come True

Two groups of doctors had worked and toiled to make their dream a reality in their respective cities, each groupnot realising as yet that their hospitals, led by Johor Corporation, will eventually become part of one of the largesthealthcare service providers in Malaysia.

Reflections from the Pioneers of Ipoh Specialist HospitalDR CHAKR SRI NA NAGARAConsultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist"(There was a) singleness of purpose amongst the staff anddoctors in the early years of ISC … Everyone was willing to go theextra mile. Staff worked on plans and committees in the formativeyears, often past midnight with no thought of overtime pay, anddoctors mortgaged the very houses they lived in to raise capital."

DATO’ DR S JENAGARATNAMConsultant Anaesthesiologist"All our surgical instruments had our hospital logo engraved onthem and we felt that was a built-in security measure."

DR F N YOONGResident Consultant Ear Nose & Throat Surgeon"We had many late-night meetings, which never ended beforemidnight and often extended to 2.00am. Fortunately, we weremuch younger then and the late nights did not impair our ability towork the following day."

DR DAVID YEO KEAT HIMConsultant Anaesthesiologist"10 October 1981 … that joyful day was the culmination of aperiod of sheer hard work, toil and sacrifice put in by a smallgroup of pioneering doctors."

DR TEOH SOONG KEEConsultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist"It helps of course if the partners are amiable and willing to giveand take, without trying to be equal to the last ringgit."

The Malaysian public was beginning to be aware of and appreciate the value of high qualityprofessional healthcare services. Due to strong demand, the two hospitals embarked onexpansion programmes to increase their bed capacity, expand facilities and services, andintroduce state-of-the-art equipment.

At Johor Specialist Hospital, a ComputerisedTomography Scanner (CT Scan) was installed inNovember 1985 to provide more accuratediagnoses of patients’ medical conditions. Itbecame the first hospital in the state of Johor to beequipped with a diagnostic imaging facility. InSeptember 1987, the hospital set up itsHaemodialysis Centre, which will eventually growto become one of the largest centres in the state.Another step forward was made with theintroduction of neurosurgery in January 1989,making Johor Specialist Hospital the first and onlyhospital in Johor to provide this service. Thesetting-up of the Lithotripsy Centre in May 1990was a technological breakthrough for the hospital, enabling the elimination of bladder, kidney and ureter stones without an operation.

Ipoh Specialist Hospital attained a number of distinctions in the second half of the 1980s. Itinstalled the first CT Scan in Perak in October 1986.Another first was scored by the hospitalwhen it opened its Radiotherapy and Oncology Centre in April 1989, which was followed bythe introduction of neurosurgery services in January 1990. The hospital’s consistent drivetowards success led to its acquisition by Johor Corporation. The acquisition was undertakenthrough Johor Corporation’s healthcare subsidiary, Kumpulan Perubatan (Johor) Sdn Bhd(KPJSB), which was under the leadership of Tan Sri Dato’ Muhammad Ali.The subsidiary’s firstChief Executive was Datin Paduka Siti Sa’diah, a position she held since January 1989.
