Our David ...

One of the greatest benefits of having Hebrew Union College in our community is the unparalleled oppor­tunity to benefit from the skills and knowledge of rabbinic students. Our rabbinic student intern program has exposed our congregation to many wonderful and talented people over the years. David Locketz is no exception.

Our tradition teaches us-aseh I' cha rav-acquire for yourself a teacher-and in many ways, with David's participation in our Valley Temple, we have done just that.

David's work with our ground-breaking middle school program has helped us create a new model for edu­cation. With two wonderful retreats, a monthly chat-room, and innovative and creative programming in our building, this program has helped to develop a group devoted to each other and the exploration of Jewish knowledge in creative ways.

There is no question that David had a difficult act to follow. I was so relieved when our youth groupers re­sponded to David's calm and kind style so quickly. They loved his sense of humor, his singing, and his perspective on Jewish life-and did they love to give him a hard time! The teasing between them all was always good for a smile!

Even though our internship has focused on the religious school students, adults have benefited, too. Our Torah studies, Hebrew classes, and experiences at ser­vices shows us the quality education offered at Hebrew Union College, and David's talents at translating his knowl­edge and passion for Judaism into interesting sermons and classes.

Personally, I will miss David's partnership that he showed during these last years. David's new senior rabbi is truly lucky. He will benefit from David's loyalty, knowl­edge, devotion, and work ethic.

At times, it would have been compelling (albeit selfish) to sabotage David's thesis in order that he would be forced to stay another year-but, sadly, he has com­pleted all his requirements and it would be unseemly to hold him back now. Truth be told, almost no congregation in America benefits as we do from a rabbinic intern, given our congregation's size.

So to Debbie and David we offer our most pro­found mazal tov on finishing this chapter of your lives so impressively. Not only have we loved watching you grow together and individually-but you both leave here ac­complishing high educational goals-and having produced Emma-your beautiful daughter. May you three have a safe and joyous move, knowing that you leave behind a congregational family who will be waiting for the next opportunity for us to be together, and to help in any way the future may require. Chazak v'ematz-be strong and of good courage as you move from this place to a won­derful future! Todah! Thank you for everything.

Acclaimed contemporary Jewish musician, Dan Nichols, will be with us for the weekend of May 14-16, 2004. On Friday night, May 14, as we prepare to cel­ebrate Graham Russell's bar mitzvah, Dan will serve as our soloist-bringing a fresh new sound to our bimah. Dan's mix of original music and the music of other con­temporary composers will make the Friday night service deeply spiritual and easy to follow.

Saturday evening, join us at Rabbi Sandford and Nancy Kopnick's home for an evening of folk music. Rabbi Ron Klotz is bringing his banjo-so join us for an evening of good food, singing, and friendship. RSVP for the Saturday evening program is helpful. This is an adults­only pr9gram and participants should bring a dessert to share with others.

Sunday morning, Dan will work with a few of the religious school classes and then we'll all come together in the Greenberg Sanctuary for a wonderful concert at 11 :00 a.m. The entire community is welcome to join us at the concert-so come yourself and bring a friend!

RABBINIC INTERN "THE SEARCH FOR GOD"

TUES., MAY 4 & 11 and MON., MAY 17 AT 7:30 p.m.

This group will explore the nature of God dur­ing these three adult education sessions. The class will study God through the perspective of both historical and contemporary Judaism. We will also contemplate our own understanding of what God is and how we en­counter the "holy" in our lives. Expect fun, lively, and supportive discussions. No prior knowledge or experi­ence is necessary.

A FEW MORE REDS' CONCESSION WORKERS

A few additional volunteers are needed to work at the concession stands during Reds games at the Great American Ballpark. This is the Temple's big fundraiser so please help. Call Jim Miller, 984-6986 for more information or to say that you will help.

NEW RABBINIC INTERN NAMED

Bradley Levenberg, an in-com­ing 4th year rabbinic student at

HUC-JIR will begin as our new rabbinic intern in mid June. Bradley is transferring from the New York cam­pus of HUC in a few weeks.

Bradley is a native of Cincinnati, growing up at the Rockdale Temple. Bradley has extensive experi­ence in youth work, having served as a youth group ad­visor in Columbus, Ohio prior to beginning rabbinic school. While in New York, Bradley worked in a religious school

and as a student rabbi in Virginia.

Bradley and his wife, Rebecca, are looking for­ward to their move to Cincinnati in mid-May. Bradley will begin working with B 'nai mitzvah students and pre­paring for our new religious school year in June. He will join rabbi Kopnick on the bimah at the end of June and lead services while Rabbi Kopnick is at camp and on vacation this summer. Please be sure to help us wel­come the Levenbergs to our congregational family.

We are very excited to announce that Buz and Barbara Stewart will be the new coordinators of the Over the Rhine Soup Kitchen project. ~ We've begun a series of training sessions with our Madrichim (student teaching assistants). Our es­teemed congregant Sarah Singer-Nourie is leading these sessions. Sarah has a tremendous amount of experience in training young people to help teachers open up the possibilities in learning for children. We're so fortunate to have her!

~ On Sunday May 2nd, Rabbi Kopnick will teach our last family education session for this school year. It is for the families of our 5th and 6th grade and will focus on "Prayer and God." Sixth graders and their parents will meet from 10:00-11 :00 and the fifth grade and parents will meet from 11 :00-12:00. It promises to be a wonderful end to our exciting year offamily education!

~ The weekend of May 14th - May 16th is Dan Nichols Musical Weekend! Shabbat will begin with a Reli­gious School Family Dinner. ~ Sunday May 23rd is the last day of Religious School this year. Come join us for a special service led by our fourth, fifth and sixth grade Hebrew students. They have worked very hard all year and this is their chance to shine! Our closing assembly will follow this service. No good Jewish event happens without food-at the close of the assembly plan on staying for the end of the year picnic. Thank you to the Sisterhood for sponsoring this event!

Noted songwriter and musician Dan Nichols will again grace our congregation the weekend of May 14-162004. Join us for the following wonderful events:

Friday, May 14, 2004-7 :30 p.m. Musical Service with a contemporary sound. (Religious School Family Shabbat dinner preceeds the service at 6:30 pm. Cost is $10.00 per family)

Saturday morning, May 15,2004-10:00 a.m. Tot Shabbat with Dan 10:30 a.m. Infonnal Morning Worship

Saturday Evening May 15,2004-7:30 p.m. Parents night out at the Kopnicks Get a sitter and join us for desserts, Havdalah, nice folks, and folk and Jewish music with Dan.

Sunday, May 16 10:00 a.m. Religious School open house for Prospective Members 11 :00 a.m. End of Religious School Concert! All are welcome
