After having spent almost a decade as the Resource Coordinator for North Texas Regional Library System, Samantha’s passion for libraries has never ceased. We have asked her to head our exciting new service to members, the CTLS Commercial Partnership Program (CPP). The CPP will offer exclusive li- brary vendor discounts to CTLS members. Be on the lookout for more CPP news coming soon. If you have a vendor you would like to refer to the dis- count program, email her the contact information at the address listed above. Please note: Due to her commitments for the Bank, Samantha is not able to provide “on demand service.” Know that she will acknowledge your email or return your phone call as soon as possible. We have no doubt that her drive, momentum and heart for libraries will make the pro- gram a success. Welcome aboard Samantha! If you have a vendor to recommend for the program, email Samantha at [email protected] with names of vendors you would like to get a discount from. Samantha will contact that vendor and try to get the best deal possible for your library and for all the other libraries in CTLS. Loca- tion of the business does not matter because Samantha works with ven- dors nationwide. Watch for our Vendor Discount page to debut this month. Only CTLS members will be able to access the page to see the great deals our Con- tracts manager has negotiated for your library.

Expanding services to CTLS members

We are happy to announce a significant expansion of our vendor discount program for member libraries. As of June 1st CTLS adds a new featured service, the Commercial Partnership Program, providing library vendor dis-counts for the 121 member libraries. We will soon debut a vendor page on the web site where you can find vendors who have negotiated special dis-counts exclusively for CTLS members. Our new Vendor Contract manager is Samantha Simpson who served in this capacity for the North Texas Library Partners until the end of May. Sa-mantha has a great track record with North Texas and she is bringing her negotiating skills and expertise to CTLS. Samantha works in the ‘for-profit’ world as a Purchaser and Financial Literacy Advocate for a Fort Worth Bank whose assets exceed $500 million. She has been negotiating con-tracts and facilitating continuing education workshops since 1993. She re-ceived her State of Texas purchasing license in 2006. After having spent almost a decade as the Resource Coordinator for North Texas Regional Library System, Samantha’s passion for libraries has never ceased. We have asked her to head our exciting new service to members, the CTLS Commercial Partnership Program (CPP). The CPP will offer exclusive li-brary vendor discounts to CTLS members. Be on the lookout for more CPP news coming soon. If you have a vendor you would like to refer to the dis-count program, email her the contact information at the address listed above. Please note: Due to her commitments for the Bank, Samantha is not able to provide “on demand service.” Know that she will acknowledge your email or return your phone call as soon as possible. We have no doubt that her drive, momentum and heart for libraries will make the pro-gram a success. Welcome aboard Samantha! If you have a vendor to recommend for the program, email Samantha at [email protected] with names of vendors you would like to get a discount from. Samantha will contact that vendor and try to get the best deal possible for your library and for all the other libraries in CTLS. Loca-tion of the business does not matter because Samantha works with ven-dors nationwide. Watch for our Vendor Discount page to debut this month. Only CTLS members will be able to access the page to see the great deals our Con-tracts manager has negotiated for your library.

Luckenbach and More

Luckenbach, Texas will live forever in a well-known song. Its most famous citizen, the late Hondo Crouch, was a good friend of Willie Nelson. Becky Crouch Patterson, a textile artist, is the daughter of Hondo Crouch, who died in 1976. She follows her first book, Hondo: My Father, with The Ranch That Was Us, in which she talks about the ranch that has been in her family for 135 years in Gillespie Coun-ty. The author states how much the pioneer spirit “bleeds through the pages of history”. Published by Trinity University Press and priced at $24.95, the book is favorably reviewed in the Austin American-Statesman of May 26, 2013.

Those of us without ranches to live on or visit have spent enjoyable time at the many state parks of Texas. During the 1930s and early 1940s, the federal government funded the Civilian Conservation Corps to give young men a steady paycheck while improving parks around the country. In the Austin American Statesman of May 26, 2013, Mike Cox says “This book…should stand as the definitive work on this interesting segment in the history of Texas’ state parks pro-gram.” Plenty of vintage and current photos enliven the text, which was written by Cynthia Brandimarte with Angela Reed. Texas A&M University Press is the publisher of this $25 book. Several nearby parks have CCC walls or cabins; this was important work for which generations of Texans can be grateful. If you have a state park in your area, particularly one that the CCC helped improve, consider this book for your collection.

Summertime and the Weeding is

Easy Summertime is usually too busy for weeding. Howev-er, some libraries have summer youth volunteers, who could be asked to do some preliminary weeding with a little instruction. Ask them to notice which books are coming apart as they re-shelve, and set those aside for other staff (or you!) to consider for re-ordering. When the schedule slows down in August, think about doing some weeding to make the shelves look fresher for the new school year. You will be glad you did! If you need a copy of the CREW manual, it is on the state library’s website at www.tsl.state.tx.us.

Youth News By Kim Lehman

Films in the Library

Some Reasons to Show Films in the Library Books to Movies – Many films are based on books. It is a way to get kids interested in reading the book the movie was based on. It is also a way for kids to relive the wonderment of a book they loved. Easy to Implement – These programs are often high interest but require

minimum staff involvement in terms of time and preparation. Entertainment – Great for a community in tough economic times. Increased Circulation - Highlight films and books in your collections. Community Involvement – Have film discussions similar to book groups.

The license is good for the library only so if other city departments such as Parks and Recreation or community groups want to show films they need to come to the library.

Increased Interest in Graphic Novels - Some librarians have even noticed

a rise in the interest in superheroes and graphic novels at their library each time a new superhero movie comes out. One librarian noted this was especially true among the preschoolers and tweens.

Some Ways to Use Films in Library Programs Libraries in Colorado do some wonderful programming with films. Here are a few ideas. View the complete document at - PDF - Showing Films at the Library - Library Research Service. One library partnered with P.B.S. to highlight their library of P.O.V. documentaries. The topics, accompanied by the additional promotion P.B.S. was able to provide, insured it’s success. The film discussion after such events can bring a small community closer together. The Senior Lunch and a Movie combines community interaction with fun at the library!

One library collaborated with the Annual Rocky Mountain Women’s Film Festival and provided a venue and light refreshments. One library shows films year round, averaging around 20 films a year. Knitflix combines knitting groups with cinematic adventures and has been wildly successful. Concessions are sold to purchase new copies of the films shown, either to be added to the collection or raffled off after a showing and to pay the speaker. Teen Film events include Anime discussion groups as well as Book to Movie clubs.

Being Legal Purchase a license from Movie Licensing USA. The license cost is based on population. Movie Licensing USA - http://www.movlic.com/

Other Resources List of children’s books to movies http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_children%27s_books_made_into_feature_films

The Canton Public Library has a list of books to movies on their website. http://www.cantonpl.org/blog/parents/childrens-books-turned-movies The Mid-Continent Library has a VERY comprehensive list of books to movies. Smithville and Films Judy Bergeron at the Smithville Library just bought a movie license and is planning on doing teen pro-grams this summer featuring mov-ies that were based on books. It looks like the library will also be a site for a local film festival viewing.

Audience Participation A number of libraries are doing audience participation mov-ies. Come dressed in characters. Sing and dance along. Some ideas to use for Shrek include cheering on Shrek, boo-ing Lord Farquaad, and making kissy noises during all the mushy parts. Some ideas for Beauty and the Beast could be growling at Beast, booing at Gaston, waving Gaston pen-nants during his song, waving paper napkins during "Be Our Guest" and blowing bubbles when Belle & the Beast kissed.

Cinco de Mayo Celebration Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Li-

brary in Edinburg celebrated Cinco de Mayo in grand style with three days of art and music. The celebration featured more than 50 artisans from various re-gions in Mexico. They brought hand-made and unique products including pottery, art, textiles, candies and much more. There was plenty of music which made it quite a celebration. Thanks to Jose Tamez for sharing these photos.

In a Galaxy Far Away The Nueces County Keach Family Library in Robstown hosted a Star Wars Event. A story time included special guest, Boba Fett, who read Darth Vader and Son by Jef-fery Brown. We also had a Stormtrooper mask and cookie craft for the kids and adults. Those that attended also had the opportunity to take a photo with Boba Fett and a Stormtrooper. A Great Partnership The Yellowstone Park Foundation and Boerne Library Foundation partnered to bring a special exhibit, called Yellowstone Summer to the Patrick Heath Public Library beginning May 24. The exhibit features clothing, artifacts, and historic souvenirs such as vintage postcards of the na-tion's first national park. Patrons can touch some exhibit pieces, such as animal pelts and a wolf skull. The Yellowstone library staff provided Patrick Heath librarians with a reading list that helped with ideas for their Summer Reading Program - Park It & Read. In the Children's department, participants will be encouraged to become Reading Rangers and receive a patch from a Park Ranger. The exhibit closes on August 15. http://www.americanlibrariesmagazine.org/al_focus/photos/yellowstone-summer-patrick-heath-tx-public-library
