11

Architecture Overview

The following diagram presents the CTPP mapping application architecture.

The CTPP Application integrates the CartoVista 4 and Perspective 6 software using Microsoft server technologies. Both applications are deployed on a Microsoft Windows web server. Perspective and CartoVista are communicating using a combinationof standard API calls over HTTP, Javascript and server-side VB.NET / C# code.

One of the key concept in the CTPP Mapping Application is the logical separation of the map from the thematic (indicator) data. Data binding is typically done client side to take full advantage of browser caching to enhance the user experience.

The CTPP data cubes are deployed in Microsoft Analysis Services while a SQLServer 2012 database is used to store the map features and attribute information.

Finally, the base map has been built as a high quality raster Map cache to provide efficient and smooth map navigation.

CTPP Base Map

The benefits of the tile cache approach for mapping in CTPP

Appropriate amount of details

The CTPP base map tiles are divided into several geographic levels (scales), displaying both general views and details on demand. Tiles can provide appropriate zooming from a national view to a detailed street map. The base map offers maps from the scale of 1: 25,600,000 (USA view) to 1: 25,000 (street) view. The scale of 1: 25,000 is proper to display the most detailed CTPP geography, Traffic Analysis Zones (TAZ).

The tile cache base map has been generated with high quality labeling, including:

• Labels for place names and important geographic features (rivers, mountains, bays, etc.)

• Road shields and road names, etc.

Seamless map navigation

The map layer being composed of pre-generated tile images, the interface reacts very quickly when zooming and panning. When navigating with the mouse and re-centering the map, the surrounding map tiles are already loaded in memory which enables smooth panning.

Screen resolution independence

The CartoVista tile system interface dynamically adjusts based on the space and display resolution available on the end user browser screen. When the browser window size is modified, the tiled map is adjusted accordingly.

Low server resources consumption

When comparing with a traditional mapping server that generated an image on every map click, a tiled map background drastically reduces the use of the server resources. Since the web server only sends existing map images, the CTPP application uses a minimum of resources, optimizing the availability of the server for other processes.

23

Thematic Analysis

CartoVista features advanced thematic mapping capabilities to display the CTPP data in innovative and meaningful ways. The software is designed specifically for statistical analysis and data visualization in a user-friendly web context. CartoVista's thematic maps are very useful to display geographical concepts such as:

• Density • Distribution • Relative magnitudes • Gradients • Spatial relationships • Movements

The following section introduces in details the types of thematic analysis supported by the CTPP Application.

Style Theme Learn more about how style themes are applied to polygon layers features to show indicator data by color, size, symbol, etc.

Color Theme Get details on color themes that modify the color of objects based on indicator data. Color themes can

be applied to Polygon layers using ranges or color gradients.

Size Theme Learn about size theme that modifies the size of objects based on numeric indicators.

Overlay Theme Get details on how overlay themes are displayed on top of the map to add another dimension to style themes using symbols, charts (pie charts, etc.)

25

Style Themes

Style themes modify the style of each of the features contained in the chosen thematic layer.

Polygon Style Theme

A type of theme that modifies the polygon feature styles in a layer (color and fill pattern) based on one or more indicators. Polygon themes are often associated with some data classification, either with ranges or discrete values. The values are represented by different colors and/or fill patterns on the layer.

For the CTPP polygon layer, the following types of analysis are available:

• By Color – Range of Values • By Color – Gradient

Page 38: CTPP Application Mapping Helpdata5.ctpp.transportation.org/ctpp/Help/CTPP... · The CTPP Application integrates the CartoVista 4 and Perspective 6 software using Microsoft server
Page 39: CTPP Application Mapping Helpdata5.ctpp.transportation.org/ctpp/Help/CTPP... · The CTPP Application integrates the CartoVista 4 and Perspective 6 software using Microsoft server

27

Color Theme by Range of Values

In CTPP, this type of thematic map is typically used on layers containing region (polygon) objects. If you have numerical data that links to geographic regions, this type of thematic map, also known as a choropleth map will help you understand and compare your values by displaying color ranges. When you select this type of thematic analysis from the Add Thematic Analysis Dialog, CartoVista reads your data values and calculates appropriate ranges automatically.

Color Theme by Range of Values on a CTPP Polygon Layer

How to Create a Color Theme by Range of Values

• Click on the Add Thematic Analysis Button from the Top Bar. • When the Add Thematic Analysis Dialog is Choose the option Background -

Color Theme By Range of Values. • Click on OK.

Once this type of theme is displayed you can then use the Thematic Styles Dialog to customize the display. With the different options you can:

• Choose the number of ranges. • Change the range calculation method • Change each range thresholds by typing a number in the text box. • Use the histogram / graph window to visually change the range thresholds

based on inflection points in your data set. • Choose a color scheme for the range map or specify colors individually. • Reverse the colors.

Page 41: CTPP Application Mapping Helpdata5.ctpp.transportation.org/ctpp/Help/CTPP... · The CTPP Application integrates the CartoVista 4 and Perspective 6 software using Microsoft server

29

Color Theme by Gradient

This type of thematic map, also known as a continuous choropleth map will help understand and compare the indicator values by applying continuous colors (gradient) to the map features. The color gradient to use for the theme is defined by 2 colors, for the minimum and maximum value in the indicator data. Each indicator value gets a color based on the gradient defined by the maximum and minimum values.

How to Create a Color Theme by Gradient

• Click on the Add Thematic Analysis Button from the Top Bar. • When the Add Thematic Analysis Dialog is displayed, simply select the

Background - Color Theme By Gradient Option • Click on OK.

Once the gradient theme is displayed, the user can then use the Thematic Styles Dialog to customize the display. The end user can change the minimum and maximum colors to define a custom gradient.

Overlay Themes

Overlay themes are displayed on top of the map to add another dimension to style themes. Using symbols and charts, you can show and easily compare numerical values in your data.

Overlay themes are essentially adding new objects (symbols, charts, etc.) on top of the thematic layer features. Overlay themes have other properties such as the opacity to control how the objects are displayed on top of the map features.

The following types of overlay themes are available and apply to all vector layer types (points, polylines and polygons).

Symbol Overlay Themes

Symbol Overlay Theme on a Polygon Layer

A type of theme that adds symbols on top of the map features as an overlay. Symbols can be displayed with different color, shape and sizes. Symbol overlay themes have the same characteristics as Point Style Themes, except that in this case, the points are created on top of the layer map features.

The overlay symbol shapes are limited to the 13 shapes available with CartoVista.

Chart Overlay Themes

32

Chart Overlay Theme on a Polygon Layer

A type of overlay theme that adds a chart on top of every map feature in a thematic layer. The following overlay themes are available in the CTPP application.

Pie Chart Theme

A type of overlay theme that displays pie charts on top of map features. Pie chart themes are constructed from a collection of indicators, which have to be of the same data unit.

Page 45: CTPP Application Mapping Helpdata5.ctpp.transportation.org/ctpp/Help/CTPP... · The CTPP Application integrates the CartoVista 4 and Perspective 6 software using Microsoft server

33

Symbol Overlay Theme

Symbol overlay themes can use a combination of graduated symbols, symbol type (shape) and color to represent indicator values on your map. In CartoVista, this multiple thematic representation is called a multi-variate symbol theme.

Symbol themes can be applied to all layer types, whether they contain region, polyline or point objects. When working with regions such as in the CTPP application, the actual symbol point is displayed at the centroid of each object.

By Color

A symbol theme with symbol color is used to show an indicator (numeric) with continuous colors. The minimum and maximum values of the chosen indicator are associated with different colors. These two colors are used to create a gradient that includes a representation of the intermediate values.

By Symbol Type

A symbol theme with symbol type is used to show your indicator data as a classification using different symbol shapes (star, circle, square, triangle, etc.). For example, you could use this to display a layer of office (points) by type with the following styles:

• Circles: commercial service • Stars: small business • Triangles: personal service.

By Graduated Symbols (Size)

A symbol theme with graduated symbols is used to display a numeric indicator as graduated symbols on the map. For example, you could display the total sales (integer values) as graduated circles on the map. The larger the symbol is, the higher the value is. From the Thematic Styles Dialog, it is possible to choose the method used to calculate the size of the symbols (Square root, Constant or Log).

Multi-variate Symbol Theme

When you combine the symbol type, color and graduated option, a multi-variate symbol theme is created. This type of representation can be very useful to display and compare multiple indicators at the same time.

35

Chart Overlay Themes

Chart overlay themes are useful thematic mapping layers that help user compare different indicators. This type of theme adds a chart on top of every map feature in a thematic layer. In CTPP, the following overlay themes are available.

Pie Chart Theme

A type of overlay theme that displays pie charts on top of map features. Pie chart themes are constructed from a collection of indicators, which have to be of the same data unit.

Sample Pie Chart Theme

Page 49: CTPP Application Mapping Helpdata5.ctpp.transportation.org/ctpp/Help/CTPP... · The CTPP Application integrates the CartoVista 4 and Perspective 6 software using Microsoft server

37

Pie Chart Theme

In statistical analysis, pie charts are useful to compare values for different categories of information. The area of each sector in a pie chart indicates the category's relative importance in relation to others.

For example, in the context of an election, you may create a pie chart map that outlines each political party with a specific color to compare the number of votes and understand its geographic distribution.

In CartoVista, pie charts are displayed as an overlay theme, which can be based on any type of layer (regions, lines or points). When displaying a pie chart theme on a layer of regions or line objects, the pies are created at the centroid of each object.

Sample Pie Chart Theme

How to Create a Pie Chart Overlay Theme

A pie chart is constructed from a collection of indicators, which have to be of the same data unit. To create a pie chart theme, select the Add Thematic Analysis Button from the Top Bar. When the Add Thematic Analysis Dialog is displayed, select the Foreground - Pie Chart option and simply select the dimension and members you wish to use from the list.

You can then change the colors assigned to all values using the Thematic Styles Dialog.

Number of Ranges

You can choose the number of ranges (from 2 to 9) by selecting from the list box. Ranges thresholds are calculated automatically using the selected range calculation method.

Range Calculation Method

You can choose the classification method used to calculate the ranges by choosing from this drop down list. The following methods are available:

Quantiles

A range classification method that distributes a set of values into groups that contain an equal number of values. This method places the same number of data values in each class and will never have empty classes or classes with too few or too many values. It is attractive in that this method always produces distinct map patterns.

Jenks

A range calculation method (also referred to as Natural Breaks Classification method) designed to determine the best arrangement of values into different classes. This is done by seeking to minimize each class’s average deviation from the class mean, while maximizing each class’s deviation from the means of the other groups. In other words, the method seeks to reduce the variance within classes and maximize the variance between classes.

Equal Ranges A calculation method that simply divides records across ranges of equal size.

Overlay themes are limited to symbol, pie charts and bar chart representations.

Overview Map: A type of map that displays an overview of the extents (rectangle) displayed in the main map.

P Pie Chart: A diagram used to display statistical data, consisting of a circle divided

into sectors of different color, each of which contains one category of information. The area of each sector indicates the category's relative importance in relation to the other categories.

Pixel: Generally, the smallest addressable unit on a display screen or bitmapped image. Screens are rated by their number of horizontal and vertical pixels; for example, 1024x768 means 1024 pixels are displayed in each row, and there are 768 rows (lines). Likewise, bitmapped images are sized in pixels: a 350x250 image has 350 pixels across and 250 down.

Point: A map object defined by a single x,y coordinate pair. Each point object is represented by a symbol style (e.g., circle, square, triangle, etc.).

minimum and maximum values associated with a class (color).

Raster Image: In computer graphics, a raster graphics image, digital image, or bitmap, is a data structure representing a generally rectangular grid of pixels, or points of color, viewable via a computer monitor, paper, or other display medium. Raster images are commonly stored in image files with varying formats. A bitmap corresponds bit-for-bit with an image displayed on a screen, generally in the same format used for storage in the display's video memory, or maybe as a device-independent bitmap. Bitmap is technically characterized by the width and height of the image in pixels and by the number of bits per pixel (a color depth, which determines the number of colors it can represent). Ruler Tool: A tool that allows you to determine the distance between two points and the length of some path.

S Scale: The relationship existing between a distance on a map and the

corresponding distance on the earth. A scale of 1 inch = 2000 feet can also be expressed as 1:24,000 (i.e., 1 inch on the map to 24,000 inches on the earth).

Scale Bar: A scale bar is a ruler with ground distances added, included in the margin of most maps. The graphical scale is used to measure distances on the map. The distance on the map is marked on the edge of a sheet of paper, which is then placed over the graphical bar scale and the distance read.

Selection: A set of data items chosen for inspection and/or analysis. Selections can be made using the different selection tools in the CartoVista toolbar or the histogram view.

Size Theme: A type of theme that varies the size of symbols to show the data at points or at centroids of areas. For example, cities could be shown with circles of area proportional to population, or census tracts could have a proportional circle at a representative point inside the tract (centroid).

Standard Deviation: A statistical measure that provides a measurement of the variability or diversity for a specific indicator (numeric indicators only). It shows how much variation or "dispersion" there is from the "average" (mean, or expected/budgeted value). A low standard deviation indicates that the data points tend to be very close to the mean, whereas high standard deviation indicates that the data are spread out over a large range of values.

Statistics Window: Displays the sum, average, minimum and maximum of all numeric indicator fields for the currently selected records. As the selection changes, the statistics window is updated automatically.

Style Theme: A type of theme that modifies the style of each of the features contained in the map layer. The following style themes are available in CartoVista: Point Style Theme, Polyline Style Theme and Polygon Style Theme.

Sum: A statistical measure that provides the sum of values for a specific indicator (numeric indicators only)

Symbol: In mapping a symbol represents a point geographic feature characterized by a location and attribute data. Point symbols can look like what they represent (trees, houses), or they can be abstract shapes (circle, triangles, etc), or pictograms.

Symbol Overlay Theme: A type of theme that adds symbols on top of the map features as an overlay. Symbols can be displayed with different color, shape and sizes. Symbol overlay themes have the same characteristics as Point Style Themes, except that in this case, the points are created on top of the layer features.

languages in the world. Although commonly thought to be only a two-byte coding system, Unicode characters can use only one byte, or up to four bytes, to hold a Unicode "code point." The code point is a unique number for a character or some character aspect such as an accent mark or ligature. Unicode supports more than a million code points, which are written with a "U" followed by a plus sign and the number in hex; for example, the word "Hello" is written U+0048 U+0065 U+006C U+006C U+006F.

Unselect: To make a geographic unit (region, point, etc.) no longer selected.

V Vector: Vector graphics is the creation of digital images through a sequence of

commands or mathematical statements that place lines and shapes in a given two-dimensional space. In vector graphics, the files are created and saved as a sequence of vector statements. For example, instead of containing a bit in the file for each bit of a line drawing, a vector graphic file describes a series of points to be connected. Vector graphics have a much smaller footprint than raster graphics.

W W3C: (World Wide Web Consortium, www.w3.org.) An international industry

consortium founded in 1994 by Tim Berners-Lee to develop standards for the Web. It is hosted in the U.S. by the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at MIT (www.csail.mit.edu/index.php). More than 400 organizations worldwide are involved, and members work on projects called "Activities." The W3C has standardized many of the fundamental technologies of the Web, including HTML and XML, URLs and URIs, the SOAP protocol and the P3P privacy description.

Window Micro State: In the context of dockable windows, a state where the window is displayed with a tiny icon only.

Window Minimized State: In the context of dockable windows, a state where the window is minimized (displaying only the window title and hiding the content).

Window Normal State: In the context of dockable windows, a state where the window is floating (normal).

X XML: The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a general-purpose markup

language. It is classified as an extensible language because it allows its users to define their own tags. Its primary purpose is to facilitate the sharing of data across different information systems, particularly via the Internet.

XSD: An XML Schema instance is an XML Schema Definition (XSD) and typically has the filename extension ".xsd". An XML Schema is a set of rules to which an XML document must conform in order to be considered 'valid'.

Z Zoom Bar: A clickable component of the map interface that graphically displays the

current zoom level. Sliding the component bar allows to zoom-in and out of the map.

Zoom Layering: A setting which determines which layers in a map displays at any one time. A minimum and maximum distance can be set for each layer to control visibility.

Zoom-in: Get a closer area view of a map.

Zoom-out: Get a wider area view of a map.
