Chipper Chennai – The Well-known and the Little-known
ProMusicals - Of Strumming and Singing I had visited ProMusicals ages ago when I had accompanied someone who wanted to buy a Yamaha
keyboard. I didn‟t remember much except the location when recently a friend asked me to pick up a book for her son who was taking up the ABRSM exam (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music). Well, the book was not available. But they took down my number, saying that they would
inform once they got it. Having experienced this in many shops, I posted a reminder to myself to check the shop a week later. So, imagine my surprise when ProMusicals called the very next day to say that I could pick up the book. More so since the book cost less than Rs 300. What professionalism and what customer service! That is when I decided to find out more about the shop.
ProMusicals was started in the early nineties by Sudhin Prabhakar, a well-known name in the music circuit. They had started with selling musical instruments. Then they started a music school. A twelve-year old‟s mother is happy with his progress in music. Enrolled elsewhere earlier, he hated his music lessons. At ProMusicals, he is more interested and enthusiastic she says. Such is the track record with the music school wing of ProMusicals. Augustine Paul, the well-known voice trainer
heads the school. I met a pleasant Yesia, when I took my friend‟s son for a practice on the exam piano. The ABRSM exams are conducted in the school in the bylane next to Promusicals shop. I learnt later that she is the course coordinator and Sudhin Prabhakar is the Chennai representative of ABRSM.
ProMusicals sells guitars, synthesizers and percussion instruments among others. Roland, Yamaha, Nord and Korg are just a couple of the well-known brands they sell. They are the India‟s sole
distributors for some of the popular AV software as well. For commercial establishments such as restaurants, malls and performance spaces, ProMusicals undertakes concept-to-completion audio solutions. ProMusicals is well known for its sound proofing works required for listening to music in its true form. Well, after visiting ProMusicals, I am tempted to resume my music lessons. I am not one for New
Year resolutions. But let‟s see how I progress with this one. I‟ll let you readers know in six months‟ time. The half-way mark!
