Welcome to the fi rst CU Denver | Anschutz WELL CONNECTED Symposium on health and well-being in built environments. The symposium is a forum for sharing ideas, insights, innovations and research in the

continuously evolving area of creating spaces, places, programs and policies that enhance and sustain the

well-being of people.

The purpose of WELL CONNECTED is to bring together public health, architecture, planning, development,

fi nance and human resource practitioners and experts from academia, non-profi t and business to present

and discuss the front-line challenges, opportunities and successes in creating WELL buildings and

communities, and to explore cross-professional relationships that help you and your organization succeed in

creating a culture of health and well-being.

We are very fortunate to have as our plenary speakers, Dr. Lee Newman, Director of the Center for

Health, Work & Environment at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, and Whitney Austin-Grey, Executive Director of Research & Innovation of the International Well Building Institute (IWBI),

as well as a diverse group of local and national thought-leaders joining us as presenters and panelists.

Dr. Hill is the Founding Executive Director of the Anschutz Health

and Wellness Center at the University of Colorado Anschutz

Medical Campus and holds the Anschutz Endowed Chair in Health

and Wellness. He was President of The Obesity Society (TOS)

1997-8 and President of the American Society for Nutrition (ASN)

2008-9. Dr. Hill has published more than 500 scientifi c articles

and book chapters that focus on the importance of healthy eating

and physical activity in weight management.

Dave oversees CBRE’s development, implementation and

reporting for all aspects of corporate social responsibility, including

environmental stewardship, community engagement and corporate

giving. Prior to his current role, Mr. Pogue led sustainability

programs for CBRE’s property and facilities management portfolio

around the globe, managing the development, introduction and

implementation of a wide-ranging platform of sustainable practices

and policies. His leadership in this area produced an award-

winning sustainability platform leveraging thought-leadership,

service delivery and industry associations to raise worldwide green

building standards.

Lee is a CU Professor and physician who founded the Center of

Excellence on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus

in order to improve work-site and environmental health and safety.

The center accomplishes this in four ways: by conducting high

quality research; offering graduate and post-graduate education

in occupational and environmental health, safety, and wellness;

providing state-of-the-art continuing education for professionals;

and conducting “public health practice” by working with communities

and companies to apply research-knowledge in practice.

Andrew is an energetic, creative and hands-on professional with

a passion for design, strong communication skills, and a strong

interest in the people side of design and in recent years has

pursued an interest in the role of urban design in achieving healthy

outcomes. He has participated in a number of initiatives centered

on community health through design, including participation in an

Urban Land Institute (ULI) Healthy Communities Advisory Services

Panel in Lamar, CO. He assisted in the formulation of the ULI 10

Principles of Healthy Communities publication in 2014, and is on

the Colorado Health Foundation Healthy Communities Advisory

Board.

presented by: Whitney Austin Grey, Ex. Director, Research and Innovation,

IWBI

Whitney is responsible for the oversight of health research and

the development of innovative design strategies and products

that seek to improve human health and wellness through building

design. Her efforts have been widely published, and she is an

invited presenter at national and international conferences—often

speaking on topics related to health centered design in healthcare

environments. Dr. Gray co-founded the NIH Health in Buildings

Roundtable, and supports health and design research through the

AIA, ULI, and EDRA.

Lili serves as the Deputy Director at the Center for Health, Work &

Environment and as an instructor at the Colorado School of Public

Health. Her background in business and social entrepreneurship

launched her passion for researching and building healthy work

environments. In 2012 she co-founded Health Links, a program

that provides businesses with advising, Healthy Business

Certifi cation and connection to local resources. She researches

how organizations can foster healthy and safe behaviors, active

lifestyles, job satisfaction, and work-life balance for all employees.

Lili is passionate about educating professionals and students on

how occupational health and safety is an essential part of public

health and running a responsible business today.

As the leader of RNL’s education practice, Kevin’s passion is

focused on how the built environment infl uences learning and

success, performance and wellbeing. His focus is on furthering the

cross-disciplinary conversation in the areas of education and civic

architecture where physical environments play an active role in

shaping communities and culture.

Director of Sustainability

Rachel leads RNL Design’s sustainability initiatives in design,

internal operations and client outreach. With experience in the

fi elds of architecture, engineering, consulting and community

advisory, Rachel is recognized for her expertise in multidisciplinary

engagement and communication. Her interest in sustainability has

spanned fi ve countries in over 15 years, grounded in a passion

for viewing buildings as resources, not loads, and the importance

of the feedback loop of post-occupancy follow-up. In addition to

her fi eldwork in sustainable design, Rachel has served in educator

positions in schools of architecture and design, and has presented

at conferences locally and nationally.

Jody Beck, PhD, Assistant Professor,

Landscape Architecture, CU College of

Architecture and Planning

Jody is a registered architect and a

returned Peace Corps Volunteer. His

work ranges from utopian explorations

to funded food systems planning reports

for local governments. He teaches a required course on the ethics

of land use, and electives that typically take on various aspects of

our food system.

Dr. Beck wrote a book on John Nolen, which focuses on the

political underpinnings of his work, and is currently working on a

book titled, “Landscape and Utopia,” in which he examines the role

that landscapes have played in utopian proposals.

Jan Johnson, Vice President of

Design and Workplace Resources,

Allsteel

Jan is highly respected as a workplace

strategist and frequently writes and

speaks about workplace topics. Co-

Chair of IIDA’s Knowledge Center

during its development, Jan currently serves on the Council for

Interior Design Accreditation Board and on the Knowledge Advisory

Panel for CoreNet Global’s Workplace Community. She has taught

courses in CoreNet Global’s Master of Corporate Real Estate (MCR)

program since 2009, and more recently helped develop the core

competencies that defi ne workplace strategy and the content for

CoreNet Global’s three MCR.w courses.

Brian Levitt, President NAVA Real

Estate Development

Brian is currently President and

Co-Founder of NAVA Real Estate

Development, founded in 2013 to

develop architecturally signifi cant

buildings in prime locations that are

sensitive to the environment and its inhabitants. He has directly

managed the development of more than $500,000,000 of retail,

multi-family and mixed-use space, including the fi rst LEED Certifi ed

commercial mall in the United States, Northfi eld Stapleton. Brian

has also advised on an additional $1.75B of real estate assets for

various clients, managing all aspects of the real estate development

process.

Robert Packard, Managing Partner,

ZGF Architects LLP

Bob Packard serves as Partner-in-

Charge on a broad range of notable

projects, including U.S. Consulates

and Embassies worldwide; a number

of large mixed-use developments in

China and the U.S., Children’s Hospital Colorado, Exempla St.

Joseph Hospital, National Institutes of Health Mark O. Hatfi eld

Clinical Research Center, EPA Region 8 Headquarters, as well

as expansions to Portland International Airport terminal, among

others. He was ZGF’s Managing Partner until 2014, and for nearly

30 years Bob was responsible for directing the fi rm’s strategic,

fi nancial and operational activities. In this role, he provided vision

and leadership at all levels within the fi rm’s practice and helped

ZGF grow from a 60-person offi ce in Portland to a fi rm of more

than 500 professionals in offi ces across the country, and with

design commissions worldwide.

Becca Robinson, MCC, President

TRG RESULTS

Becca is one of the pioneers of the

coaching profession and was one of the

fi rst coaches in the world to be awarded

the Master Certifi ed Coach credential.

She has worked with Fortune 500 and

100 companies, as well as associations

to improve performance, effectiveness and productivity. Becca has

an extensive background in employee engagement and leadership

development, having worked for over 15 years with executives at

all levels. She wrote the coaching program for Dr. Phil McGraw and

worked with Tony Robbins.

Gregory A. Schmidt, P.E, LEED AP, President & CEO, Saunders

Greg has responsibility for the overall

success of the organization, creating,

communicating and implementing

the organization’s vision, mission

and overall direction. He is a primary

stockholder/owner, and a member of

the Board of Directors. Greg joined Saunders in 1994, is a licensed

Professional Engineer and a LEED Accredited Professional, and

is involved in numerous organizations including: Executive

Committee Member, University of Colorado Real Estate Council,

Board Member, Aurora Economic Development Council; Member,

National Association of Industrial & Offi ce Properties; Member,

Young Presidents’ Organization- International & Rocky Mountain
