  • PREFACE

Cubans in exile, from 1959 to the present, have produced numerousperiodical publications. The "Cuban Exile PeriodicalsCollection" of the University of Miami Library includes a largepercentage of them. This bibliography comprises periodicalpublications collected by the University from 1962 to April 1,1986.

The Univerisity of Miami has been and is in a unique position toassemble Cuban exile periodicals. Since its founding in 1926,the University has been closely associated with Cuba and itspeople. As early as 1928, it counted several Cubans among itsregistered students, and cultural and sports-related interactionsoon developed between the University of Havana and theUniversity of Miami.

Miami's geographical location made it the logical point of entryinto the United States for most Cubans who left the island afterFidel Castro seized power in 1959. Among the early arrivals werelibrarians, some of whom joined the faculty of the University ofMiami Library. Rosa Abel la and Ana Rosa Nunez were amongthese; they started collecting the "little newspapers in exile,"which included many of the periodical publications by Cubanexiles in the United States and throughout the world. LesbiaVarona, another Cuban librarian, soon entered this collectingeffort, and many members of the Cuban exile community, notablyJose" R. Puig in Miami, contributed to the evolution andenrichment of the Collection. This process has been an ongoingone still active today.

The criterion established for inclusion into the "Cuban ExilePeriodicals Collection" is for the periodical to have beendirected, edited, or published by Cubans in exile. Theperiodicals' formats include newspapers, magazines and bulletinsand they are published by individuals as well as by associations, institutions, and other types of organizations. Subject matterreflects the various aspects of exile life and interests, in-cluding political ideology and activities with the possibility ofa return to a free and democratic Cuba playing a major role.Cuban culture and its preservation in exile, encompassing avariety of topics such as history, literature, folklore, science, music, art, and religion, are represented. There are alsopublications related to finance and politics which show theeconomic and political impact of the Cuban exiles on thecountries that have received them as new citizens.

    -XI-

  • Among the most important periodicals contained in this collectionare :

América Libre , El Avance Criollo and Bohemia Libre ,of socio-economic and political nature.

Alacrán Azul and Exilio , literary publications whichinclude works by internationally recognized Cuban exile figures, such as ethnologist and folklorist Lydia Cabrera (Miami);novelist Guillermo Cabrera Infante (London); novelist andessayist Severo Sarduf (Paris); and journalist and writerCarlos Alberto Montaner (Madrid)

    .

La Revista Cubana , an historical journal with essays andarticles on Cuban history, directed by Cuban scholar CarlosRipoll (New York).

Prensa Médica , a newspaper on medicine and relatedsubjects

    .

Proyecto , a magazine on the construction industry in SouthFlorida and the impact made upon it by Cuban exiles.

Economía and Banco y Economía , financial magazineswhich deal with the economic repercussions of Cuban exileactivity in the state of Florida.

Noticias de Arte , a fine arts magazine on artistic movementsat local, national, and international levels.

Verbum , a religious, philosophical and literary magazine.

Revista Ideal , a general interest magazine with emphasis onthe religious activities of the Cuban Roman Catholic community inthe greater Miami area.

Cuba Deportiva , a sports magazine on Cuban exile sportsfigures and events.

Boletín Cuban Women's Club , a bulletin on the cultural andsocial activities of Cuban exile women in the greater Miami area.

Of great importance also are the many newspapers, magazines, bulletins, and newsletters published by the "Asociación de losMunicipios de Cuba en el Exilio." Representing themunicipalities of pre-Castro Cuba, these publications deal withhistorical and socio-economic issues related to thesemunicipalities, and demostrate, as well as contribute to, theunity of the Cuban exile.

    -xii-

  • Gastón Raquero, internationally known Cuban exile scholar andjournalist working in Madrid, has called the exile periodicals"heroic journalism." In an article on Cuban exile journalism, hewrote: "...One of the most beautiful aspects of the Cuban exileis that which we can call the heroic journal ism. .. that heroicpress which comes from the soul rather than from financialmeans. "

    1

Through its "Cuban Exile Periodicals Collection," the Universityof Miami is helping preserve these examples of heroic journalism. The publications are essential sources for those researchers andscholars interested in Cuban studies, and in particular, in theCuban exile since 1959.

This bibliography is more than a mere listing of periodicalspublished by an exile group during a specific period of time andcollected by a university. It is a chronicle of the hopes andaspirations of the Cuban people in exile, of the struggle tomaintain a unity of purpose, of the need to preserve, add to, andtransmit a cultural heritage. These periodicals are heroic notonly in terms of the financial hardships which most of them havehad to surmount in order to be published, but also with regard tothe very nature of the exile soul striving to be one again, someday, in a free Cuba.

  • INTRODUCTION

The largest concentration of Cuban exiles is found in the Stateof Florida. It is in the city of Miami, the so-called "Capitaldel Exilio Cubano," where most of the periodicals by Cuban exileswere horn. Today many of these periodicals are still beingpublished, with new titles having been published over the 28years of exile.

The University of Miami, which is centrally located in the area, houses the largest collection of Cuban exile periodicals. "TheCuban Exile Periodicals Collection" holds 66 5 separatepublications, titles which include newspapers, magazines, bulletins and newsletters. With the growth of the collection, itbecame imperative that a bibliography be compiled to provideresearchers with access to this unique primary source collectionof Cuban exile material.

To show the uniqueness of the materials within this collection, asearch was made of the 665 titles. The following bibliographicsources were checked:

Cuba, 1953-1978 : A Bibliographic Guide to the Literature /ed. and compiled by Ronald H. Chilcote with Sheryl Lutjens.White Plains, NY : Kraus International Pub., 1986. Vol. 2:appendix. (73 titles found).

Irregular Serials and Annuals : An International Directory .11th ed. New York: R. R. Bowker Co., 1986. (15 titlesfound)

    .

New Serial Titles : A Union List of Serials Held byLibrarians in the United States and Canada, 1981-85Cumulation . Washington, DC : The Library of Congress,1985. 6 volumes. (11 titles found).

OCLC (Ohio College Library Center) On-line Systems .(47 titles found).

This collection bears great importance for various reasons.Through these primary sources, researchers and scholars cananalyze the changes that have taken place in the Cuban communitysince their exile began in 1959. In addition, further studiescan be made on the socio-economic and historical impact that theCuban exiles have had on many areas of the U. S. A., the state ofFlorida, and particularly the Greater Miami area.

The publications were initially written by the Cuban refugees toexpress the political tragedy that occurred in Cuba in 1959.Their desire was to combat the new Communist regime, to try tore-establish the democratic government in Cuba, and to maintainthe traditions and culture of the Cuban people.

    -xv-

  • Unlike many ethnic groups, the Cubans have not settled in any onearea within a city but have bought homes throughout metropolitanareas (greater Miami and/or Dade County are examples in Florida)

    .

As a result, the scope of coverage of these publications usuallyranges beyond the city or area in which they are published. Theyare basically limited only by the geographical area of theSpanish-speaking community.

The majority of these periodicals were published by individualrefugees or associations despite great economic hardships. Whilesome titles have lasted a long period of time, many of thesepublications were short-lived and some were issued only once.

The general topic within these publications are polemic andpolitical in nature, as well as having national and internationalscope. Other topics which may emerge are historical, sociological, literary, artistic, religious, scientific, financial, philosophical, and even some which deal with thesporting activities of the Cuban exiles.

A significant factor of this collection is that is serves as ameans of communication for those in the Spanish-speakingcommunity who cannot read or write fluently in English. Therefore, the majority of these periodicals are written inSpanish.

Another interesting characteristic of these publications is theirfree distribution in Hispanic businesses, such as groceries, bakeries, pharmacies, restaurants, etc., particularly in thegreater Miami area and in other cities of the United States. Most of these free periodicals are supported by advertisingrevenue; however, others can be obtained only throughsubscriptions

    .

The "Cuban Exile Periodical Col lection" is part of the Archivesand Special Collections Department of the University of MiamiLibrary, in Coral Gables, Florida. It is available to anyone whodesires to do research using this Collection.

    Arrangement

The bibliographic citations are arranged in alphabetical order bytitle, followed by a list of directors and four indexes:chronological, geographical (by country), geographical (by city),and a subject index. For easy reference access, each entry hasbeen assigned an alpha-numeric code, the letter representing thefirst letter of the title, and the number corresponding to theconsecutive order within each letter.

The physical description area provides for the number of volumesor numbers of issues published, illustrations if any, and thesize or sizes of the publication. The numbering and the beginningdate of the publication is given followed by a dash representingan ongoing publication. When a title has ceased, the number and

    -xvi-

  • date of the publication are closed, if the dates and numberingcan be verified. The verification for closing dates has beenobtained from bibliographic sources or directly from the editors, directors, publishers or collaborators of the publication. Theclosed entries do not necessarily imply that the University ofMiami Library holds all issues.

It is important to note that the imprint as given is taken fromthe masthead on the editorial page, which in many cases differsfrom the masthead on page one. If there is no editorial page, the information is taken from the top of page one.

Annotations have been provided for each entry. The order of theannotations is as follows:

    * Frequency* Editor, when given (if more than three, only the first name

is cited followed by et al.)* Language* Subtitle variations* Publisher variations* Change of size* Change of title and/or mergers* Subject content, if no subtitle* "Description based on" (only when the Library lacks the

first issue of the title. In which case the first issueheld in the collection is described.)

All dates used in the annotations are given in Spanish, exceptwhen the publication is written only in English.

    List of Directors

The list is arranged by director's name. If more than onedirector is given, only the first name is listed. The name ofeach director is taken from the last issue of each of the titlesheld in the collection. If the director is not given, thepublication does not appear in the list.

    Chronological Index

This index is arranged by the year in which the publicationbegan, followed by month and day, when available. For thosepublications for which months are not known, [n. d. ] is supplied.

    Geographical Indexes

Two geographical indexes are included. The first is arrangedalphabetically by country, with only the United States beingsubdivided to states and cities. The second is arrangedalphabetically by city, followed by state and country.

    Subject Index

The subject index is arranged in alphabetical order by subject.

    -xvii-

  • The subjects used in the index are based on, or taken from, theeditorial statement as given in the first issue received by theLibrary. In order to make the subject approach to thiscollection more meaningful to the user, the following subjectterms have been omitted or limited:

Anti-Castro Movement is used for those organizations whichattempt to overthrow Castro and communism in Cuba.

Anti-communist Organization is used for those organizationsand movements which try to prevent the spread of communism.

Cuba, as the country, is only used after the subject(e. g., "History, Cuba"), or where it appears as the first wordin the proper name of an association, club, etc.

Cuban , when used after a subject, means Cuban exiles(e. g., "Lawyers, Cuban," rather than "Lawyers, Cuban exile")."Cuban," when used as the name of an association or group, means this association or group in exile (e. g., "CubanBrotherhood Association"). If the association or group existsin Cuba and in exile, then "(in exile)" is added (e. g., "CubanAir Force (in exile)").

Cuban American is used only when it is part of anassociation or group (e. g. , "Cuban American Chamber ofCommerce" )

    .

Cuban exile is not used. Instead, "Cuban" or "Cubans" isused to represent the Cubans in exile (e. g., "Cubans in DadeCounty, FL").

Democracy has been limited to those publications which, forthe better part, cover this subject.

Exodus . The main exodus of the Cuban refugees were theFreedom Flights, Camarioca, and Mariel. Coverage of theseexodus are found in the majority of the periodicals withintheir respective dates. Therefore, the subject "Exodus" or theexodus under its specific name is omitted.

Hispanic American is used to include all Spanish-speakinggroups who have become U. S. citizens, including CubanAmericans

    .

International . Since the majority of these publicationsdeal with international topics, the term "International" hasbeen omitted.

Latin American is used for all non-U. S. citizens fromLatin America.

National . Since the majority of the publications deal withnational topics, the term "National" has been omitted.

    -XVlll-

  • Pol i t i cal is used only for those publications which, forthe better part, cover this subject.

Refugee is used only when the Cuban exile is in transitfrom Cuba.

The subjects for governmental agencies have been used as follows:

    Individual city (e. g. , "Local government in Miami, FL").Several cities within a state (e. g. , "City governments inFlorida").County governments within a state (e. g. , "Dade County(Florida) government").State government (e. g. , "Florida government").

Date subdivisions have been used only with those subjects forwhich there are many entries. The dates used represent thebeginning date of the publication, thereby covering current newsor articles for the period given. It is possible that thesepublications may cover retrospective news and/or articles, but noeffort has been made to establish this fact.

Names of associations, institutions, clubs, etc., are indexedunder their proper name; also, the name is inverted to bring outother subject approaches.

Cross references have been used for all acronyms (e. g. , "A. I. P.SEE Agencia de Informaciones Periodísticas").
