One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest: The Evolution of a StoryBy Elizabeth Pool, Resident Dramaturg

The story of Randle P. McMurphy, Nurse Ratched, Chief Bromden, and the assorted patients in a mental institution in the Pacific Northwest captures a snapshot of a specific time in U.S. history, in the evolution of mental illness treatment, and in the experience of the Native American in Oregon. It is nestled in the fall of 1963, after Martin Luther King’s “I have a Dream” speech and before the assassination of President Kennedy. It champions the individual and the community.

When Ken Kesey first put pen to paper to begin work on Cuckoo’s Nest, he drew inspiration from his time spent working as an orderly in a mental institution in California. Intrigued by the patients and administrators at the hospital, he began writing character outlines. Kesey, who was experimenting with drugs at the time, conceived the idea of integrating Chief Bromden (Chief Broom) into his story. The Chief ’s presence allowed the author to insert his perspective on the events in the ward. The basic structure of the book was established with the invention of McMurphy, Ratched, and Bromden. The book was published in 1962 to great acclaim.

“There’s a new book. It sounds like you.” Such was the information passed on to Dale Wasserman by his agent Hope Taylor upon reading Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Wasserman fell in love with the story and wanted to craft it into a play. After meeting Kesey and securing his approval, Wasserman launched into an intense period of research. He explored mental institutions in New York and Georgia, witnessed over sixty electro shock treatments, and even had himself committed for two weeks. In the spring of 1963 he flew to the Caribbean, took refuge in a hotel and wrote the stage adaptation. The play opened on Broadway November 13, 1963, but Wasserman felt that the play had been doctored and rewritten and was no longer his own. He never saw the original production. Wasserman subsequently revisited and revised the script.

When the play opened on Broadway in 1963, Kirk Douglas played Randle P. McMurphy. Douglas had fallen in love with the novel and ultimately wanted to see it produced as a movie. He was unsuccessful in getting the movie made and eventually his son Michael took over the project. It 1975 the movie, directed by Milos Forman, was released with Jack Nicholson playing the lead role. Kesey was originally involved in the making of the film, but walked away after the first two weeks of production due to a financial dispute. He was unhappy with the way the role of Chief Bromden was reconceived and claimed never to have seen the film.

Today the novel is on many high school reading lists, the film celebrates its 35th anniversary, and this season the play will receive 9 productions in regional theatres around the country. It speaks to the power of the story that it has been told in so many forms.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHTDale Wasserman

Dale Wasserman wrote for theater, television and film for more than 50 years. He is best known for the musical The Man of La Mancha, a multiple Tony Award winner,

and the stage play One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, based on Ken Kesey’s novel, which has also won several Tony Awards. He was an orphan by age 9. As a young man he roamed America riding freight trains and avoiding any formal education. At nineteen, he began working in the theater and held every conceivable job – stage manager, lighting designer, director and producer among them. At age 33, he walked off the Broadway musical he was directing, abruptly deciding to become a writer. Mr. Wasserman’s many other credits include screenplays for The Vikings, Cleopatra, and A Walk with Love and Death, as well as countless TV dramas. His plays include Premiere!, Western Star, An Enchanted Land, A Walk in the Sky, Beggar’s Holiday and Players in the Game. He is also the author of the novel The Impossible Musical: The Man of La Mancha Story. Mr. Wasserman was awarded Honorary Doctorates from several universities. Dale Wasserman died on December 21, 2008 of natural causes.

ABOUT THE AUTHORKen Kesey

Ken Kesey was born on September 17, 1935, in La Junta, Colorado. He attended the University of Oregon and earned a degree in Speech and Communications. He received a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to enroll in the Creative Writing program at Stanford. While at Stanford, he participated in government-funded experiments involving chemicals at the psychology department to earn extra money. These chemicals included psilocybin, mescaline, and LSD. This experience fundamentally altered Kesey, personally and professionally. While working as an orderly at the psychiatric ward of the local VA hospital, Kesey began to have hallucinations about a Native American sweeping the floors. This formed the basis for Chief Bromden (for “broom”) in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, his writing project at Stanford. Kesey published One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in 1962. The novel was an immediate critical and popular success. In 1964 Kesey finished his second novel, Sometimes a Great Notion. The novel deals with the conflicts between West Coast individualism and East Coast intellectualism. In 1964, Kesey and his friends, who had become known as the Merry Pranksters, bought a school bus and drove to New York to see the World’s Fair. Kesey filmed a significant portion of the journey, and he later would show clips from the trip at his parties. Kesey became the proponent of a local band known as the Warlocks, which later became the Grateful Dead. Kesey and his Merry Pranksters became notorious for their “Acid Tests” and use of LSD and other drugs. Kesey’s exploits with the Merry Pranksters during this period formed the basis for a best-selling book by Tom Wolfe called The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. When the government made LSD illegal, Ken and the Pranksters fled to Mexico, where Kesey tried to fake a suicide in order to escape later prosecution. But when he returned to the United States, he was arrested on a marijuana charge, leading to a five-month prison sentence at the San Mateo County Jail. Upon his release from jail, Kesey moved to a farm in Pleasant Hill, Oregon with his wife to raise his four children. He quietly taught a graduate writing seminar at the University of Oregon. Kesey published Kesey’s Garage Sale in 1973. His later works include Little Tricker the Squirrel Meets Big Double the Bear, a children’s book (1990); Sailor Song (1992); and Last Go Around (1994), his last book, about a famous rodeo in Oregon. Kesey died on November 10, 2001, following cancer surgery on his liver.

Out of nearly 3,800 hospitals, only 23 received the 2009 Premier Award for Quality. In 2010? Even fewer. And a mere half-dozen hospitals in the entire country earned both. Over the past year, we also opened our new Pavilion — the first of its kind in the state — with all private rooms. And we again received the Magnet® designation for nursing excellence, something less than three percent of hospitals can claim. But while we’re proud of these recent achievements, what they really add up to is this: the true winner is you. And that’s exactly how we want it.

Only 6 hospitals in the country.

Only 1 where you live.

Paoli earns the Premier Award for Quality—again.

HISTORyNow in our 36th season, the People’s Light & Theatre Company is a

non-profit, professional theatre founded in 1974 by Danny Fruchter, Meg Fruchter, Ken Marini, and Dick Keeler. These artists were committed to making theatre rooted in service to the community. Today, this founding principle remains central to our core mission: to make plays drawn from many sources to entertain, inspire and engage our community. We hope that these plays and programs bring people together and provide opportunities for reflection, discovery and celebration.

We extend our mission through a wide range of nationally recognized arts education programs for youth and adults that we call Arts Discovery. Arts Discovery serves 30,000 young people each year through in-school residencies, student matinees that bring students from 21 high schools to the theatre each year for free, special projects tailored to specific youth communities, and a year-

round Theatre School for both young people and adults. Our education programs and professional productions are closely tied to and informed by each other, resulting in a unified commitment to excellence throughout the organization.

People’s Light has always made its home in Chester County. In 1979 the Theatre moved to our current seven-acre site in Malvern, which includes two black box theatres with 375 and 180 seats, respectively. We produce seven to nine plays per season, mixing world premieres, contemporary plays, and fresh approaches to classic texts for our 6-Play Series and Target Family Discovery Series. We house guest artists in a restored 18th century farmhouse that includes a banquet room that can be rented for special events, as well as a bistro, Places! Total community served is nearly 85,000 annually. Our $5 million annual budget employs 70 full and permanent part-time artists and staff members and almost 200 additional guest artists.

The Theatre continues to be recognized nationally for commissioning new plays; of the 384 productions we have mounted over the course of our 36-year history, 150 were world/regional premieres, over one-third of our production output. Recent world premieres include Absence by Wendy Hammond; Richard Hellesen’s adaptation of The Emperor’s New Clothes; Y York’s adaptation of Jerry Spinelli’s Eggs; Russell Davis’ The Day of the Picnic; the adaptation and translation of Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author by company member Louis Lippa; Playwright Russell Davis’ adaptation of Crispin: The Cross of Lead by Avi; and Y York’s adaptation of Getting Near to Baby by Audrey Couloumbis, which was recently remounted at both Childsplay in Tempe, Arizona and the Seattle Children’s Theatre.

Notable past productions include the American professional premiere of Edward Kemp’s translation of Gotthold Lessing’s Nathan the Wise, Lou Lippa’s two-part, six-hour adaptation of Theodore Dreiser’s Sister Carrie, and Karen Sunde’s Achilles: A Kabuki Play (both world premieres). Our productions have toured as close to home as Philadelphia (Holes at the Kimmel Center in 2005, The Emperor’s New Clothes at Longwood Gardens) and as far away as Mexico, Budapest, and Cyprus.

People’s Light has been the recipient of major grants from many national and local foundations and corporations, including most recently the Engage 2020 Innovation Grant which is supported by the Wallace Foundation, The Pew Charitable Trusts and The Philadelphia Foundation, and is a program of the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance’s Engage 2020 research and marketing initiative; Independence Foundation New Theatre Works Initiative Grant, and The National Endowment for the Arts Big Read program. Please see our complete list of generous supporters in this program. Nationally, People’s Light holds a reputation for excellence and innovation. In the five-county Philadelphia region, People’s Light is valued as a cultural center that responds to its community.

Arts Discovery SpotlightA Glimpse of How Your Support of People’s Light Makes a Difference.

Above and Beyond – Meet BeccaBecca is one of our Teen Summerstage scholarship recipients and a member of S.T.E.P., the Subscription Teen Engagement Program here at People’s Light. As part of her scholarship for 2010-2011, she manages PLTC’S Teen Blog (an online journal for teens, by teens, who participate in Arts Discovery programs at PLTC). Her work on the blog includes filming interviews, scribing the group’s ideas during brainstorming sessions, and creating short documentaries

to capture the day-to-day work in the rehearsal room. Becca also contributes to Arts Discovery programs as an actress with the same verve that she applies to the blog. Her enthusiastic support for our programs has encouraged new young people to come experience People’s Light classes and productions, and her commitment to “paying it forward” has been a tremendous asset to our ongoing work. We are grateful to YOU, our patrons, for making such an important collaboration possible. Your contributions help us fund scholarships that support great people like Becca!

In the 2010-11 Season, People’s Light is honored to be a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Big Read grant. This program gives us the opportunity to stage events, school residencies and book giveaways that encourage young people and adults in our area to read Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The Big Read will culminate in our spring 2011 production of Laura Eason’s adaptation of the novel as part of our Target Family Discovery Series. We thank the following donors who have contributed to the grant matching fund that is required for this exciting program. For more information about the Big Read events and supporting this effort, please click on Big Read on the Support page at peopleslight.org, or contact Jane Moss at [email protected] or 610-647-1900, ext.102.

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.
