Cultivating Tao and cultivating our hearts 心篇 When you cultivate Tao, do not just pay attention to what is beautiful, delicious and comfortable. You also need to endure the hardship and suffering, only then you can be a true cultivator. A devoted cultivator should understand that hardship is part and parcel of life. The more you do, the more you fulfill your vows. Hence those who cultivate Tao and propagate Tao should have no complaints or regrets. Your sincere heart and your own realization of Tao are the most important aspects in cultivation. Wisdom is gained through experiencing your life whilst trying to improve yourself. For instance, when encountering a problem, to solve it satisfactorily requires wisdom. Apply what you have learned into practice and only then you can make a difference in your life. Everyone’s duty is to be responsible to oneself. Everything you do has an effect on all the sentient beings, yourself, and everyone around you. Today, you are here in the Temple to learn Tao, but where is Tao? Tao is in your daily life. You should act in accordance with Tao and set an example of Tao, devotedly practicing it yourself, and then you’ll see how worthwhile it is to cultivate Tao. Our knowledge should always be consistent with our actions? Knowing without doing is in vain. Doing without planning is reckless. When you have a belief, or a kind thought, how do you fulfill it? It cannot be accomplished in two or three days. It will take constant practices throughout your life to achieve success in cultivation. As you come to know yourself better, you will show your inner sincerity in your expressions and behaviors. Then, people will see you as a Buddha. The world around you will become a Buddhaland paradise because of you. The real paradise is in your heart. When you manage holy affairs, do them naturally, you should not expect any rewards; always follow your True Nature and Buddhaland will certainly support (and bless) you. If you are expecting rewards and troubled, then you are not doing it naturally, eventually you will feel powerless to achieve your goal. Be selfless in your Tao cultivation; be contented in fulfilling your roles and responsibilities. You need to cultivate Tao without complaints, without regrets, without a starting point or a finish line. Start again after resting; be sure that you really make an effort to help this world in becoming more harmonious and peaceful. Hope that in this time of great urgency and chaos, all of you can settle down your heart, calm down your mind and be sincere. Be sincere to yourself, to everyone and everything you do. Face your own heart, be sincere and demonstrate your sincerity in your behaviors and expressions. I, Holy Teacher, expect all my disciples to do this: whenever you encounter any unsatisfactorily or imperfection (deviations from Tao), do your best to make it complete and perfect (i.e. conform to Tao). Start from small accomplishments and end up with major
