Welcome to Term 3 to all our families, especially those who are new to EHS. It was lovely to see the children’s happy and excited faces at school on Monday. EHS had an exciting start to Term 3, making history with the introduction of Whānau groups. Monday was the official launch of the Whānau group system, with a very special school assembly. It was wonderful to see so many children dressed in their Whānau group colours and supporting each other in such a positive way.
In the assembly, children learnt how to earn tokens for their Whānau group. Tokens are extra special and are given to children who go above and beyond their personal best in following the EHS values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.
The ‘token’ canisters will be on display outside the office. Feel free to pop by at any time to read about the Whānau group system and to see how well students are doing at filling these up. Beginning with the next newsletter, we will be giving the community regular updates on the latest ‘token tally’. We also launched our first whānau group challenge.
Children are invited to write a chant that could be used by their Whānau group for school events.
Congratulations to the following children who have been selected as our first EHS Cultural and Whānau Leaders.
Cultural Leaders – Talia Atlas and Logan King
Kōwhai Leaders – Ayva Gardiner, Alex Brown, Ollie Grummitt
Pōhutukawa Leaders – James Fryer, Emma Hetherington, Ishaan Patel
Rātā Leaders – Maddie Willis, Sam Jiang, Katherine Huang
Tōtara Leaders – Finley Salmon, Nia Jobanputra, Quinlan Copley
This week, the whole school is celebrating Matariki! This is such a positive way to begin Term 3 - a time of renewal and new beginnings. This year we have chosen to experience Matariki through two values ‘Whanaugtanga’ (working together on a shared experience) and ‘Kaitiakitanga (protecting and caring for our school environment)
We have a whole class swap on Wednesday, and on Friday we have a whole school Matariki assembly where each class will present a crafted kakahu for the hall.

Something to read - Children need to play sport – Why is that? - Playing a Sport involves a huge time commitment and is often a logistical effort from the whole family, the player, the parents (aka drivers and number one supporters). Anyone who plays and or supports Sport tells us it is worth it. It is worth seeing the smiles on their child’s face. Children tell us that they play sport to have fun, to be with or to make friends and because they love to move but signing your child up for a team sport will do a lot more– it can arm them with some valuable skills they all use both on and off the field.
Sport NZ says: “Kiwi kids love sport and starting young will ensure they develop a life-long habit of being involved and active”. A habit that brings with it a multitude of benefits. The Physical benefits are obvious but, if we think about it, we can also add social and emotional benefits to that list. In a recent article on children in sport a Clinical psychologist says
“Skills such as commitment to training, being on time, encouraging your team mates and winning or losing graciously are all part of being a good team person, and skills kids will need to call on throughout their lives.” He says sport can also lead to friendships outside their school group which can be very valuable for kids, while also teaching kids how to work towards a common goal. The list of benefits is endless, he says, adding that team sports provide structure and routine and can give kids access to positive role models outside the immediate family, like coaches and managers. So What Sport will your child play?
JUST A REMINDER WE LOVE RECEIVING PHOTOS OF OUR CHILDREN BEING ACTIVE AND ENGAGED IN SPORT. Send them either via email at [email protected], or drop them to the school office to be displayed on the Sports Noticeboard.
