MUSICAL PERFORMANCE

Old Songs with New Soul, New Songs with Old SoulWednesday, Oct. 18 • 7 p.m. • Alex Theatre

Tight vocal harmonies and rollicking folk instrumentation have made Gem City Revival one of the hottest acoustic acts in the region. Featuring Abby Badach Doyle on fiddle and vocals, Pat Doyle on guitar and vocals, and Ang Phillips on guitar and vocals, this trio is dedicated to keeping honest, rootsy, Americana music alive in Erie, Pennsylvania. Join us for an evening of old and new songs from Gem City Revival, as well as a discussion of the influence of traditional folk music, the emerging genre “Americana” and the evolution of Nashville roots music.

PRESENTATION

From California to Catalonia: The Ties That Do Not Bind A brief history and analysis of secession and civil war, then and nowWednesday, Nov. 29 • 7 p.m. • Alex Theatre

Join noted local historian Dennis Hickey, Ph.D., on a rapid-fire journey through a problem that has frustrated even the most brilliant political architects and world leaders. On a daily basis, events are occurring to reshape the modern globe. Understanding history will make us better prepared to live in our ever-evolving world. What factors have provided a basis for the formation of nations and alliances, and which factors have torn them apart? We will travel from the Rome of Julius Caesar through the American Civil War up to today’s Brexit and Calexit movements in our search for the answers.

CHOIR PERFORMANCE

Christmas at Mercyhurst North EastWednesday, Dec. 13 • 7 p.m. • St. Mary’s Chapel

The traditional cookie and punch reception will immediately follow.

PRESENTATION

Anarchy in the USA: The Political Implications of Punk Rock MusicWednesday, Nov. 8 • 7 p.m. • Alex Theatre

The musical genre punk rock, which rose to prominence in the ’80s and ’90s, is known for its up-tempo, in-your-face musical stylings, poor guitar playing, and lyrics expressing the angst, dissolution and discontent of American youth. The music, and the attitude and lifestyle that go along with it, have been the building blocks for a youth subculture that has proven effective at delivering liberal political ideology to young America. Join us for a discussion with Steve Gregg, director of programming at Mercyhurst’s Booker T. Washington and Corry campuses, on how a musical revolution has become a tool for political revolution.
