Task 1

How do we use what we have learned in the Assignment?

Before the seminar:

Re-familiarise yourself with the four main cases you have looked at in some of your seminars this semester: (Seminar 1; Bristol RVI / Seminar 2; Disney / Seminar 3; Nissan-Renault / Seminar 4; Daimler-Chrysler)

During the seminar:

1. Working in small groups choose to re-examine ONE of three main cases – Disney, Nissan-Renault or Daimler-Chrysler

2. For whichever one of these 3 cases you choose as a group imagine you are using this case for the HR0372 assignment and outline a draft of how you might write the assignment as a group.

3. Give feedback (organized with Table headings and columns as below – Focus, Theory, Key Concepts, Evidence (Examples), Possible Conclusions) to the whole group

As an example the following has been completed for you for the first seminar case- Bristol RVI:

Why might this be an appropriate Theory? (e.g. because the Public Enquiry used the concept of ‘Club Culture’ in their report.

Show what sorts of practices indicate these cultures e.g. decision – making taking place in committees indicates Role Culture

Show how these cultures may impact on learning e.g. task cultures will emphasize the learning necessary to achieve outcomes

Bristol RVI was a Club Culture

In Club Cultures, the values of the club dominate the values of the organization

In Club Cultures the members of the club dominate decision – making and the criteria used for making decisions in the organization

At Bristol RVI the ‘club’ did not value learning, this had terrible consequences.

Having read this example now as a group undertake 1,2 and 3 above by choosing one of the other 3 cases outlined above and completing a table with the following headings:

N.B (Remember that in this Module there are no specific Model Answers because different theories will focus our attention on different features of the cases. In other words we will look at different types of evidence depending on the concepts that our theories use. Part of what you will do in the actual Assignment is to argue why a particular theoretical framework is appropriate to the case.

After completing the above your seminar tutor will take you through material relating to these examples as a summary

Task 2Bring any questions/issues you wish to discuss with your tutor about the work you have done for your assignment, you should be well on in terms of the work you have done by this week (teaching week 12), so make use of this session to fine tune your ideas. However do not bring along all of your assignment completed so far for the tutor to look at, just questions/issues arising from your work)
