Intercultural Understanding

Connecting to your curriculum Intercultural Understanding is a new general capability in the Australian

curriculum. It is a requirement across all subject areas, at most year levels.

Through Intercultural Understanding students learn to engage with diverse

cultures, recognise commonalities and differences, and cultivate mutual

respect. They learn to value and view critically their own cultural perspectives

and practices, and those of others.

• LANGUAGES: Intercultural understanding is a central aim of learning

languages, as it is integral to communicating in the context of diversity,

the development of global citizenship and lifelong learning.

• HUMANITIES: Students learn about the diversity of the world’s places, its

peoples, and their lives, cultural practices, values, beliefs and ways

of knowing.

• THE ARTS: Through engagement with culturally specific Performing Arts

programs students experience new and wonderful art forms and are

challenged to consider accepted roles, images, objects, sounds, beliefs

and practices in new ways.

• HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION: Our programs provide an exciting

alternative to traditional physical activities. Focus areas include Rhythmic

and Expressive movement actives (RE), active play and minor games (AP),

fundamental movement skills (FMS) and Life Long Physical Activities (LLPA).

French - Les Batons Francais and Vive La France

The Greatest Pie In the World was a thoroughly enjoyable and professional

performance with very clever actors. My colleagues are very eager for them to

return next year and our students loved the play. Thanks so much!

refugee / migrant stories

Bouzouki Refugee (VIC)Everyone thinks of the bouzouki

as the ultimate Greek instrument,

but it isn’t. The bouzouki arrived in

Greece in the 1920s, and it came in

the hands of 1.5 million refugees,

who were seeking asylum in Greece.

The strange musical instrument, the

bouzouki, was initially despised and

even outlawed. Bouzouki Refugee

explores issues of migration by

tracing the origins and the journey of

the bouzouki from Asia Minor.

Ciao! Migrating to Australia (VIC)Emilio Ricciuti brings alive the true

story of Pasquale as he comes to

Australia for the first time in 1950

as a migrant. It’s unique, hilarious

and so much fun! The story is based

on Emilio’s father, who inspired the

touring Production of CIAO! His story

is told through history, dance and

culture, in an interactive presentation,

including teaching a traditional

dance, the Tarantella.

Iranian Voices (VIC)A powerful story about a female

musician’s journey from Iran

to Australia. Gelareh shares her

experiences through music & song

and reflects on the struggles of

female musicians. Students will

learn how Iran lost its freedom of

expression, how it wasn’t normal to

carry instruments in the street, and

how women were forbidden to sing

alone so that their voices could only

be heard collectively in a choir.

Songs for Cow Country (VIC)Ajak Kwai’s haunting, melodic voice

is distinctly African in all its colours,

rhythms and mystery. Whether Ajak

is singing in Arabic, Sudanese or

English, she leaves you in no doubt

as to the depth and richness of her

Dinka roots. Music is the vehicle

for her stories of extraordinary life

experiences as a refugee, exiled from

her home country. She sings about

freedom, peace, love and ...cows.

Seeking Refuge: A Personal Story (VIC)Ehsu fled the danger and poverty of

Burma to begin a new life with new

hope in Australia. In this program,

he shares his stories of life inside a

refugee camp, the excitement of a

new beginning and the hardship of

starting over. In this touching and

heartfelt encounter, Ehsu will give

students an insight into life as a

refugee, and his desire to contribute

to the community.

Goodwill Ambassadors (NSW)The Goodwill Ambassadors are

Middle-Eastern migrants with a

message: it’s time to tackle cultural

stereotypes, diffuse conflict and

promote a positive image. They have

grown up in conflict zones and have

worked hard to overcome prejudices

perpetuated for generations. Using

music as a uniting force, they tackle

bigotry, blame and belonging, discuss

their cultures and experiences

integrating into Australian life.
