This guide explains step by step how to 'paste' subtitles into a DivX video permanently.The subtitles to use can be in any format (SUB, SSA, SMI, TXT, etc.) Permanent subtitlesare specially useful if you are about to create a VCD/SVCD, or if you want to watchsubtitled movies with any player or device.

After you have downloaded the VirtualDub Subtitler Filter, copy subtitler.vdfinto the\PLUGINS directory under the VirtualDub program directory. If the PLUGINS folder does

not exists, create it.

The above picture is an example of the VirtualDub and its Plugins folder structure.

Edit the subtitle file Even if your subtitles are already in SSA (SubStation Alpha) format, this step is requiredto customize the subtitles aspect. Subtitle Workshop will be used here to convert thesubtitles to SSA and/or edit their font aspect and position in the output video.Open the subtitles with Subtitle Workshop.

The Output Settings dialog will open up.

The recommended subtitle fonts are Arial, Arial Narrow and Tahoma, usually Bold. Thefont color should be a brigth one (yellow or white), and the secondary colors should beblack. At the Others tab at the same dialog, you can customize several additionalsettings.Now you can save the subtitles from the File menu.

When saving, the following dialog will appear. Make sure to double click the SSA format.

Add the subtitles in VirtualDub After you have created your SSA subtitles, start VirtualDub and open the target movie.We'll recompress the movie with the subtitles in this last step. Note: There is no way toapply the subtitles without recompressing the video.Go to the Video menu and select Filters...

Click the Add... button.

Select the "subtitler" filter and click OK.

After you click OK, the Subtitler Configuration dialog should appear. Click the "..."button and browse to the SSA file you have previously saved with the SubStation Alphaeditor.If you want to use the original subtitle file word wrapping mode, select Manual wordwrapping. You can also use the Automatic or Smart word wrapping modes, but whenplaying the video and applying Pan&Scan feature, long subtitle lines won't fit the videoviewable area.

Click Show Preview to see how your subtitles will appear in the encoded video. Belowyou can see the result of my subtitles with the font Tahoma (bold) in 20 points size.

To scroll faster, hold down SHIFT while moving the video position slider.If you are satisfied with the results, proceed by closing all opened dialog windows.

Save the video file To save the video file with the applied captions, we will recompress the video and leaveaudio as is.Under Video select Full Processing Mode, and under Audio select Direct StreamCopy.If you want the output file to match a specific file size, you will need DivXLand BitrateCalculator to calculate the video bitrate.Go to Video > Compression. Double click the DivX codec and configure it as explainedhere.Finally go to File > Save As AVI... and enter a file name for the output video. Theencoding process will start and your output video will include the subtitles permanently.

The DivX 5 codec configuration You can configure the DivX codec to encode the video in either 1 or multiple pass mode.Multiple pass mode will increase the output quality.1-pass configurationWhen you are at the General tab, select the 1-pass variable bitrate mode. Then enter theEncoding Bitrate value, in kbps (kilobits per second). This is the value you calculated inthe second step with DivXLand Bitrate Calculator.Switch to the Video tab. The only thing you should change is the Max Keyframeinterval, to a value between 150 and 200 frames. A lower value means a fasteraudio/video synchronization during playback, but this may increase the output file size.

Click OKto save the settings and continue.Multiple pass configurationWhen you are at the General tab, select the Multipass - 1st pass variable bitrare mode.Then enter the Encoding Bitrate value, in kbps (kilobits per second). This is the valueyou calculated in the second step with DivXLand Bitrate Calculator.Switch to the Video tab. The only thing you should change is the Max Keyframeinterval, to a value between 150 and 200 frames. A lower value means a fasteraudio/video synchronization during playback, but this may increase the output file size.Click OKto save the settings and continue. Save and encode the file as explained in theguide from where you came from. After finished, access the codec prooperties dialogonce again and select the Multipass - nth-pass variable bitrate mode, and save the fileagain. You can overwrite the previously created file in the first pass. This file will beencoded now using the compression information gathered during the first pass.

It is recommended to use the Home Theater profile for movies.

Recommended settings are:- MP3 constant bitrate (112 - 192 kbps)- Avoid using video bitrates lower than 700kbps.- If you use DivX 4.x to encode, you should

select the DivX 4/5 (Normal) estimationmode. The DivX 5 (Accurate) mode isintended for the DivX 5.x compressionfactor.If you want to find out the current audiobitrate of a movie, open the WindowsExplorer and right-click on your movie.Select Properties. At the second tab youshould see the file information, andsomewhere there should appear the audioquality. (eg., 96 kbps).About the resolution, for movies it isrecommended to use an horizontalresolution of 640 pixels with thecorresponding equivalent of vertical pixels.For music videos and TV capture, the320x240 resolution should be moreadequate (this similar to TV resolution).This calculator can be used for the DivX3.x/4.x and 5.x codec versions. Sincealmost all users reported that thecalculated DivX 5 bitrate usually resulted in

a lower file size than expected, the DivX 5(Accurate) mode has been added to get amore realistic bitrate prediction.
