Welcome to the Whitsundays and

Cumberland Charter Yachts!

This manual has been specifically designed to make your cruise with CUMBERLAND a safe and enjoyable one. It should be read carefully and completely by all the crew prior to the beginning of your cruise to ensure your maximum enjoyment. It contains information to help you plan and prepare for your Whitsunday cruise and is to be used in conjunction with the area cruise guide, David Colfelt's "100 Magic Miles Of The Great Barrier Reef".

You are strongly advised to obtain a copy of this publication prior to your arrival. This is the cruising guide for the area that you will use extensively during your charter. Your knowledge, on arrival, of the guide’s contents and operation will reduce your area briefing time and offer you a wider choice of first night anchorages. Copies are available from leading boat book outlets or from Cumberland Charter Yachts. Charter Agreement This information manual is also an integral part of your Charter Agreement and sets forth your responsibilities and contractual obligations. Cumberland personnel will be pleased to provide you with any explanation or additional information you may request regarding the Agreement. Changes to dates, number of crew, arrival times, etc. affect the Agreement and therefore if any changes are required to the Agreement’s details of your charter please contact Cumberland who shall amend your Agreement, if possible, to meet your request. A complete list of the crew must be provided to Cumberland prior to departure. Any changes to the crew prior to or during the charter should be reported to Cumberland immediately. Responsibilities and liabilities are necessarily limited to the crew listed on the manifest. Due to the seriousness of safety considerations, overnight guests on board not listed on the manifest, or in excess of the permissible survey limits, represent a violation of the charter agreement. Should charterers travel in flotilla comprised of more than one vessel, please note that each vessel is chartered under separate contractual agreements. Terms, adjustments or resolution of matters applicable to a charter contract on a vessel apply only to the specific vessel and persons on the vessel manifest. Adjustments for a specific vessel do not extend in any respect to other vessels. Master of the Vessel

The person whose name appears on the charter agreement as the charterer is deemed to be the master of the vessel. This person assumes responsibility for the vessel, crew and guests (if any), equipment and inventory for the period of the charter. The master of your vessel is responsible for the safety of the crew and the vessel. The master should be familiar with the "Rules of the Road" at sea and should not operate the vessel whilst "unfit". Drugs or any illegal substance are strictly forbidden on the vessels and contravention shall result in immediate termination of the charter and forfeiture of all monies paid. Operating a vessel while intoxicated is also illegal. The master of the vessel is responsible for the actions of all crew while on charter whether on-board or ashore.

What to Bring

Being a tropical area, light casual clothes are all that are required except in the winter evenings (May - August) where a jacket or jumper may be desirable. The Island Resorts are relaxed, but smart casual dress is required in the evening. Items suggested for your comfort are as follows:- * A good quality sunscreen and hat - the sun is VERY strong. * Polarising Sunglasses - to see reef areas when anchoring. * Your favourite CDs or Videos/DVDs. * Beach Towels * Insect Repellent Fishing and snorkelling gear – A fishing pack can be hired from Rods and Hooks through the charterer centre. Basic fishing gear is available for sale at the Marina but if you are a keen fisherman you may wish to bring your favourite equipment. Snorkelling gear is provided for each vessel - however if you have your own set we would recommend bringing it. SCUBA equipment is available for hire, to QUALIFIED divers only, so please advise. Remember that STORAGE SPACE on yachts and cruisers is LIMITED so bring as little as possible in SOFT BAGS only please. Any luggage not required on board can be stored at our base. A word of advice is to pack everything you consider essential and then leave at least half at home. Dinghies - your vessel is provided with a dinghy, outboard and paddles. This is the ONLY vessel that is allowed to be towed behind your boat. DO NOT BRING YOUR OWN DINGHY OR JET SKI. Airlie Beach is the mainland commercial centre for the Whitsundays offering a range of services as follows:- ANZ Bank Westpac Bank National Bank Commonwealth Bank Chemists Doctors Dentists Ambulance Chiropractors Travel Agents Car Hire Service Stations Car Security Estate Agents Laundromats Yacht Brokers Restaurants Boutiques There are EFTpos facilities available at various stores in Airlie Beach. There are five Automatic Teller Machines - Westpac, National, ANZ, Commonwealth and Mackay Permanent Building Society (cashcard). There are ATMs at the marina. We look forward to your arrival at our charter base located at Abell Point Marina, Airlie Beach. If you travel to the area by air, advise your airline coach driver, as you board, that you are holidaying with Cumberland. If you travel to the area by car you will find our base at Abell Point Marina, Airlie Beach. Security car parking is available at an additional charge. If required please book through Cumberland reservations. On your arrival at our charter base you will be given a thorough area briefing on the charter limits, anchorages, weather and tide conditions, as well, we shall answer any questions you may have. Following your area briefing you will be given a comprehensive briefing on the operation and handling of the vessel and then a short cruise to ensure you are completely comfortable with your craft. If the charterer’s ability to handle the vessel is not considered adequate, a sailing guide will be recommended. These briefings take approximately 3 hours and depending on your departure time, we shall advise you on a comfortable first night anchorage.

Cumberland Information Manual - Page 3 Charter Period / Briefing Times

Your charter period begins at noon and ends at 10am. The time required for briefings are part of your charter time. Your vessel is available for loading at Abell Point from 8.30am and from 11am at Hamilton Island. Your briefing will then commence at 9.00am at Abell Point and after 11am at Hamilton Island. To ensure you do not experience any delays, we ask that you BE AVAILABLE AT THE APPOINTED TIME and that you have obtained all your personal requirements BEFORE YOU ARRIVE. If you will not be available for the above briefing times please let us know and we will adjust your time accordingly. If, due to your arrival time, departure cannot be affected prior to 3pm, you may need to spend your first night in the marina. The charterer is responsible for the marina charges and no refunds are available for the lost charter time as your charter begins at your scheduled briefing time. If you wish to extend your charter, Cumberland will make every effort to accommodate your wishes. Mid - charter Turnaround On charters exceeding seven nights, we will supply additional linen. If you have taken advantage of Cumberland's excellent provisioning service, reprovisioning will take place after five days at base or at Hamilton Island. Reprovisioning at Hamilton carries a surcharge. This will be discussed with you at the briefing. Fresh water and fuel can be obtained ONLY at Abell Point Marina and Hamilton Island. Returning the Vessel All good things must come to an end and on your last day of charter you are required to return and offload the vessel by no later than 10am. The debrief may take up to one (1) hour. On departure your vessel is supplied with full fuel and gas tanks which shall be refilled, at your cost, on your return. If you are planning to depart by air on the day of your return, you may need to return earlier in the day so please advise us of your travel plans, so we can make suitable arrangements. Prior to arrival back at base you should be packed up and ready to off-load immediately. Your vessel will be fuelled and we will then take you to a dock to offload. We would suggest packing up before departing your last night anchorage. Staff will meet you on your return, so give base a radio call when you are approaching Airlie Beach, so that we can be on hand. It is part of the agreement of hire, that you return the vessel in a clean condition otherwise you shall be subject to an additional cleaning charge. There will be a charge for heavily or unusually stained linen. Your assistance would be appreciated. Upon your return, we request your comments on any equipment that you have found to be faulty such as a small tear in the sail that requires attention, a light not working etc., items that may be overlooked when we are preparing the vessel for the next charter. You have been aboard the vessel for a few days so minor problems would be known. Your help will be appreciated. Please take the time to complete your Charter Comments Sheet during charter and hand it to your briefing staff upon return. Your Damage Waiver Unless previously paid a non-refundable damage is payable on day of departure by cash or credit card. This waiver covers you for any loss, damage or breakage that occurs during your trip unless you are found to be in breach of your agreement – such as travelling out of hours, moving around in a restricted area or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If any loss or damage occurs while on charter, Cumberland must be notified immediately. Failure to do so is a breach of your charter agreement. The vessel is checked upon return, cleaned and prepared for the next charter.

Onboard Supplies Your vessel is supplied with crockery, cutlery, cooking gear, detergent, garbage bags, matches, scourers, sponges, basic cleaning gear and toilet paper. We supply linen, blankets and pillows. Wet weather jackets, snorkelling gear, charts, cruising guide and tide tables will be onboard. All the BBQs are gas. A complete inventory is supplied on the last page of your vessel operations manual.

Rubbish Disposal All perishable rubbish including food scraps, paper, cans etc. should be placed in garbage bags and disposed of at Hamilton Island or at Airlie Beach on your return. Wash out in salt water before stowing in garbage bags. Pets As the Whitsunday Islands form part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park animals are regrettably, without exception, not permitted in the Marine Park or aboard Cumberland vessels. Currency The Australian dollar is the currency throughout the Whitsundays. Cheques are not accepted on the islands or by Cumberland. While eftpos is accepted at most establishments do not rely on this method entirely. Cash or credit cards are the best form of currency. There is an ATM on Hamilton Island. Pests Even the Whitsundays has its unwanted guests. Cumberland maintains an extensive pest control program with the main problem being cockroaches. These are carried aboard in cardboard boxes or paper bags from the land. Please limit or exclude taking cardboard boxes on-board. Flying insects should not be a problem on the yacht but may bother you ashore at some locations, especially at early evening. We suggest you carry a repellent when ashore and avoid anchoring in a windless cove or too near mangroves. Swimming Swimming and snorkelling are one of the great pleasures of this tropical area. The water is comfortably warm even in our winter months. Preferably swim with a partner and do not swim after dark. We strongly recommend hiring lycra stinger suits as protection against stinging jellyfish. These can be hired from us on the day of departure for $25 each. Water Water on-board is naturally limited so you need to conserve. Water is available at Abell Point Marina and Hamilton Island Marina, if staying overnight. If you are visiting Hamilton for a day visit you can refill with water for a charge. If you are visiting an island resort you may partake in a shower while there. Whales Between the period of June to September whales are seen throughout the Whitsundays Islands. Please inquire with staff for further information.

Cumberland Information Manual - Page 5 For Your Added Enjoyment

Cumberland can arrange for a variety of optional services while you are on charter. To arrange for these services just complete the appropriate section in your charter centre.

Provisions Good food is an essential part of an enjoyable holiday and here at Cumberland we have developed a provisioning service catering for all tastes. The service offers package provisioning - "part" or "full" and standard or gourmet menu or you may use the self-select menu. Full provisioning offers all meals and snacks while part provisioning offers all breakfasts, lunches and most dinners allowing for resort dining or the fish you may catch. Part provisioning contains all breakfasts and lunches and omits the first of every three evening meals. Food and liquor ordered in advance will be placed on board prior to your arrival. PLEASE NOTE – that under Qld licensing laws a beverage order must be accompanied by a provisioning order – you cannot just order liquor by itself. Your dining, while on charter, can be supplemented by the various restaurants available at the Island Resorts as well as the extensive range offered at Airlie Beach. A starter pack can be purchased which will see your vessel stocked with little things you may have forgotten. For $30 you will receive salt and pepper, 4 cakes of personal soap, plastic wrap, aluminium foil, tissues, serviettes, paper towels, garbage bags, and rubber gloves. If you do prefer to do your own provisioning remember that we ask that you to be READY FOR DEPARTURE AT BRIEFING TIME. Should you require fuel or water while on charter it is ONLY available at Hamilton Island or back at base. Your vessel carries enough fuel and water for 7 days, provided reasonable efforts are made to conserve supply. Paddleboards This may be your best opportunity to experience the peace of paddleboarding. Boards are hired for the full charter period and will be placed on board prior to your arrival.

Scuba Equipment The Whitsunday region boasts some of the best reef diving in the world, most of which is within the charter area. Full scuba gear hire is available. Please note that scuba hire is only available to qualified divers. Remember to bring your card with you or else you will be unable to take delivery of your gear or refill your tanks. There is a limit to the number of tanks allowed and some vessels are unable to carry tanks – please check prior to ordering.

Reef Dives For the ultimate experience a dive on the outer reef is a must. We can arrange pick up from your vessel by one of the outer reef dive boats to take you on a day of superb diving.

Novice Diving For those who would like to experience diving but are not qualified, Cumberland can arrange for a fully supervised reef dive to give you a taste of this fabulous sport.

Reef Trips A visit to The Great Barrier Reef is a highlight of a Whitsunday charter. There are a number of options available from taking a fast ferry from one of the island resorts to being picked up from your vessel at anchorage by seaplane and enjoying the delights of aerial views of the islands and the reef. While on the reef you can snorkel or scuba dive. A Not To Be Missed Opportunity.

Cumberland Information Manual - Page 6 Sailguides Half Day and Full Day

If you are a boating enthusiast but feel you may be a little rusty or lacking in experience, you can still enjoy all the pleasures of cruising the Whitsundays as master of your own vessel by employing a qualified Sailguide. The Sailguide may be employed for as little as half a day or for the full charter period. Prior to your arrival, our briefing staff will have examined your resume. Please note - it is your responsibility to show Cumberland that you are capable of being safely in control of the vessel - otherwise - Cumberland has the right to insist you employ a sail guide. The advantage of taking a sail guide is manyfold!! Take the stress out of learning new boat skills, get your crew up to speed and feel confident in your boat handling skills. Even the most experienced skippers can find the first couple of days charter quite daunting and exhausting taking in the safe operation requirements of an unfamiliar vessel, whilst also training the crew (whether family or friends) to safely assist with boat handling. Our SAIL GUIDES are all experienced briefers with many hundreds of hours on the water, all have commercial marine qualifications and minimum of inshore yacht master certificates. Whether you’re a complete novice or an experienced sailor, utilising the services of a SAIL GUIDE for the first day (or more) is a really great start to a wonderful holiday offering you a friendly knowledgeable guide onboard who will: Provide you with a wealth of knowledge and information about the beautiful Whitsundays Ease you and your family into your Whitsundays experience focusing on: Safe docking and departure from marina berths, including the safe handling of dock

lines. Anchoring techniques (ensuring that you have minimised any chance of dragging). On board safety (man overboard etc). Navigate the Whitsundays - If you are an experienced sailor or aiming for yachtmaster

or coxswain qualifications, brush up on your Navigation skills (true/magnetic courses, chart work and simple position fix and taking bearings).

Safely pick up moorings and make fast. Tack, gybe with confidence and safety, practice all points of sail, reefing, furling and sail

handling. To clarify the duties of your Sailguide if over 1 day: The Charterer controls and directs the itinerary of the cruise, unless such conflicts with the safety of the vessel. While the Sailguide is responsible for the safe operation of the vessel, the charterer, as master of the vessel, is solely responsible for damages or losses and any events that occur during the charter. The Sailguide is not being compensated to cook, share quarters or to perform as servant and or baby-sitter, unless such is agreed prior to charter. The Charterer is responsible for Sailguide meals on-board the vessel while on charter. The Charterer is not required to pay for entertainment or meals of the Sailguide while on-shore. If the Sailguide is dismissed mid-charter, the Charterer is responsible for transfers for the Sailguide back to Airlie Beach. Please note that the provision of the above services is arranged on your behalf. While Cumberland will make every effort to ensure the quality of the service, they cannot accept responsibility for lack of performance.

Cumberland Information Manual - Page 7 Whitsunday Cruising Area

Being a tropical area, we are favoured with excellent cruising, but night falls rapidly after 6.00pm. Regulations laid down by the Queensland Department of Transport Harbours and Marine Division requires all vessels to be at anchor or on a mooring/marina berth by 4.00pm every day. We suggest that you plan to reach your overnight anchorage by mid-afternoon, have a swim, a "siesta" and light up the B.B.Q. The cruising area for bareboats is laid down by the Queensland Department of Transport Harbours and Marine Division and is broken into two separate areas governed by the size of the vessel. The areas, shown to you at the area briefing, are as follows:- 1 F Survey - From George Point in an easterly direction to a point one nautical mile north of Dolphin Point on Hayman Island, then generally to a point one nautical mile N.N.E. of Pinnacle Point, Hook Island, the S.E. to the easternmost point of Deloraine Island, then to the easternmost point of Harold Island, then generally S.S.W. to the northernmost tips of Jesuit Point of Maher Island, then along the western coastline to the south easternmost point of Shaw Island, then in a line to Cape Conway. 1 F Extended Survey - Area as described above plus the following: From Jesuit Point on Maher Island in a S.E. direction to the easternmost point of Mansell Island, then to the eastern side of Tinsmith Island, then to the southernmost point of Allenby Island, then in a N.W. direction to Cape Conway. NOTE All vessels travelling on the eastern side of Hook and Whitsunday Islands are subject to controls in adverse weather conditions. It is necessary that all vessels stay on the western side (inside) of the islands when winds exceed 25 knots or when a Strong Wind Warning has been issued. CHARTERERS ARE REQUIRED TO FOLLOW ANY INSTRUCTIONS/LIMITS

GIVEN BY RADIO ON A DAILY BASIS To give you some idea of distance, Hayman Island is 17 nautical miles or approx. three (3) hours travelling from Airlie Beach. It is a similar distance to Hamilton Island and travelling time varies between 3 and 4.5 hours, depending on the tide. Navigation and Publications Although few navigational skills are required to get you around the charter area, the following equipment is part of each vessels inventory:- Chart Aus. 252, 825 and 254 Dividers Tide Tables Binnacle Compass Anchorage Guide Vessel Manual 100 Magic Miles of The Whitsundays

Page 9: Cumberland Charter Yachts · leading boat book outlets or from Cumberland Charter Yachts. ... Airlie Beach is the mainland commercial centre for the Whitsundays offering a range of

Cumberland Information Manual - Page 8 National and Marine Parks

Apart from the resort areas, the Whitsunday Islands are part of the National and Great Barrier Reef Marine Park systems. During your visit, remember:- * All plants, animals and features of the landscape are not to be disturbed. * Domestic animals and firearms are prohibited. * Return all rubbish to the mainland. DO NOT BURY OR LEAVE RUBBISH ASHORE. * Zones where fishing, collecting and diving are restricted, have been gazetted and will be

advised on arrival. Refer to the relevant pages in the "100 Magic Miles" guide. * Public Moorings are available in the Marine Park in designated "sensitive sites". There is

a strict two hour limit on their use during the day and fines are applicable if you overstay this limit. If you arrive at the anchorage after 3pm you may stay overnight and vacate by 9am the next day. More information on the moorings is in the 100 Magic Miles. Moorings will be discussed thoroughly during your area brief.

* You may take dead shells in SOME areas, live shells and all corals are totally

protected. * Fishing by handline or rod and reel is permitted in the designated areas. Only take the

fish you need for your own consumption and return small fish to the water. Cumberland can hire fishing gear (Please see Charter Centre for details) but if you are a keen fisherman you may wish to bring your own gear. Remember this is tropical fishing so you will need 25lb line. There are restrictions on the use of spearguns in certain areas and of course no spearguns near resorts. The use of spear guns with SCUBA gear is illegal in Queensland.

* Some of the best diving in the world is offered within the charter area subject to area

restrictions. Basic snorkelling gear is provided and SCUBA equipment is available for hire to certified divers. Refills for tanks can be obtained at most resorts.

* Fires for beach barbeques are not allowed. * Oysters can be taken, except in restricted areas, for personal consumption only and

must not be taken from the immediate area. Take only large oysters and leave the smaller ones to reach maturity. The best time for oystering is on a falling tide and the best spots are away from popular anchorages.

Remember fines will be imposed by the Park Rangers for any breach of the Regulations. It is your responsibility to ensure that your planned activity is within those regulations. Details of the restrictions are in the Cruising Guide and will be given during your Area Briefing.

Travelling around the Whitsundays is straight forward provided you use the charts and the area guide provided on-board. There are a few problem areas in open water and these will be explained at the area briefing. The major features that must be taken into account are the ISLAND FRINGING REEFS. Around all the islands, the reef areas demand care but you should not have any navigation problems providing you pay strict attention to the area cruising guide. As you approach any island or anchorage, consult the relevant chart, post someone as look-out and travel slowly.

NEVER MOVE AROUND THE AREA AFTER THE ALLOCATED HOURS Areas With Extensive Reefs Are: Hayman Island Langford Reef South of Hayman Due to high number of groundings Cumberland vessels are

not allowed in this area. Hook Island Entrance to Nara Inlet Whitsunday Island Fitzalan Pass Entrance to Gulnare Inlet - Enter and Leave on RISING tide

ONLY. Plum Pudding Island Southern End Henning Island Hamilton Island Driftwood Bay Daydream Island Southern end Hook Island Entrance to Butterfly Bay Isolated Reefs Off: Hook Island South eastern point. Whitsunday Island Whitehaven Beach. Shute Harbour A well marked set of rocks. Areas Requiring EXTRA CARE: 1. Reef area around Hayman Island. 2. Surprise Rock, 2 miles due south of Craig Point on Whitsunday Island. 3. Spitfire Rock, South of Lindeman Island. 4. French Shoal, East of Whitehaven Beach. 5. Pegasus Rock, South of Haslewood Island. 6. Platypus Rock, South of Burning Point.

AT ALL TIMES CONSULT THE "100 MAGIC MILES" MANUAL

Page 13: Cumberland Charter Yachts · leading boat book outlets or from Cumberland Charter Yachts. ... Airlie Beach is the mainland commercial centre for the Whitsundays offering a range of

Cumberland Information Manual - Page 12 Tides, Rips and Currents

The major difference to cruising the Whitsundays to most other areas is the large tidal range, particularly during the spring tide. Particular attention should be given to tide times and heights so that you can plan your passage to take advantage of the flow or at least minimise the tidal effect. A copy of the current TIDE TABLES is supplied aboard your vessel and an extract will be sent to you prior to charter. This book covers the entire Queensland Coast and the reference point for the Whitsundays is SHUTE HARBOUR. The tidal movement is up to 12 feet (4 metres). If you anchor in 4 metres of water at high tide, you will sleep that night on a strange angle, dent your pride and most possibly damage your bond refund. There is approximately six (6) hours between tides (High and Low) and the tidal flow will be strongest in mid turn. This large tide flow also causes strong rips and currents around land masses such as Island and Mainland points and in narrow passes between: Hayman and Hook Islands Hook and Whitsunday Islands Solway Pass Fitzalan Pass Unsafe Pass etc. The effect of these currents is less in open water and mid-channel. Such areas should NEVER BE ATTEMPTED BY SAIL ALONE and the engine MUST be started. The strength of these rips can be such that they can overpower the sail, but the engine will always pull you through. Tides FLOOD (come in) to the SOUTH, and EBB (go out) to the NORTH. This will affect your heading when crossing the passage and affect your progress if sailing up or down the passage. The tide flow will also affect the sea conditions. Mainly in stronger wind conditions it is wise to plan your trip so that the wind direction and the tide flow are the same direction i.e. in a S.E. wind the best conditions are with an outgoing tide. Tide against wind causes steeper and larger waves. This information is most important when winds are in excess of 20 knots.

CALMEST SEAS ARE WHEN TIDE AND WIND ARE TOGETHER.

TIDES FLOOD TO THE SOUTH AND EBB TO THE NORTH.

Page 14: Cumberland Charter Yachts · leading boat book outlets or from Cumberland Charter Yachts. ... Airlie Beach is the mainland commercial centre for the Whitsundays offering a range of

Cumberland Information Manual - Page 13 Weather

The weather pattern in this area is reasonably predictable and relatively stable. In the winter months (May - September) the winds will be predominantly from the South East at 15 to 20 knots with seas 0.5m to 1.25m. In most cases winds drop off in the late afternoon. In stronger wind conditions winds tend to come in gusts, "bullets", formed by the hills and valleys. If sailing in these conditions you should take care when crossing bays and inlets as "knockdowns" can occur if you are carrying full sail. In these conditions you should reef sails and motor into open water or into anchorages. If a strong wind warning is issued (25-30 knots, seas rough) you are required to follow instructions and only move if necessary. If you do move you must have your headsail furled, mainsail reefed and motor to your anchorage. Forecasts are given on the two-way radio every morning at radio schedule times, i.e. 9.30am and 2.30pm The area that concerns the Whitsunday is coastal forecast: BOWEN TO ST LAWRENCE. Please note that due to commercial radio restrictions Cumberland will only advise the weather updates at morning and afternoon skeds. If you plan to overnight at one of the exposed anchorages such as Chance Bay you will be instructed at morning skeds to monitor lunchtime skeds for any weather update will be suitable. If the forecast is unfavourable you will have enough time to reach another anchorage. In the event of bad weather being forecast, Cumberland Base may issue a directive as to your course of action.

THESE DIRECTIONS ARE FOR YOUR SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF THE VESSEL AND SHOULD BE FOLLOWED IMMEDIATELY WITHOUT

UNDUE QUESTION.

Each vessel is fitted with a VHF radio for contact with Cumberland Base as well as Island Resorts. Frequencies 81, 82 & 11, and are monitored by Cumberland Base between 8am and 5pm. Frequencies 81 and 82 are the main commercial channels for this area. RADIO PROCEDURE 1. Before you speak TURN UP the volume, adjust the squelch and always wait to ensure the

channel is clear. After depressing the transmit button wait a second or two before you speak. Use your vessel name for identification.

For example: "Hamilton Island, Hamilton Island, Hamilton Island, This is .......... over". Always the base you are calling first, THREE TIMES, then the vessel name, TWICE. 2. If you do not receive a reply, try again. If there is still no response wait 5-10 minutes

and try again. 3. Always keep your sentences short and confirm with the person you are calling that they

have received your message. Ensure that incoming callers have completed their message before your reply. Wait for a second or two.

4. When you have completed your communication always wait for a few minutes before you

turn the set off, in case there are some further messages for you. The Radio is for contact with base and Island Resorts, contact between vessels is not permitted. If you are travelling with another vessel advise Cumberland staff prior to departure and we will advise you which channels you may use for communication with another vessel. MOBILE PHONES The best coverage in the area is with Telstra & Optus. You will not pick up a signal on your phone everywhere you go but it is worthwhile bringing with you.

DAILY RADIO SCHEDULES - 09.30 and 14.30 (9.30am - 2.00pm)

For your safety CUMBERLAND BASE will call you twice a day at the above times.

This contact will be on: RADIO - CHANNEL 81 or 82. You must make every effort to be available at these times.

The morning call is to determine your plans for the day and the afternoon call is to determine your overnight anchorage. All calls should be brief and to the point without any unnecessary chat. For example: "Good Morning all vessels this is Cumberland Charter Yachts. The Bowen to St. Lawrence weather forecast for today is as follows ................." "Vessel Name, Vessel Name this is CUMBERLAND CHARTER YACHTS, may we have your plans for the day, over". Your reply: "CUMBERLAND BASE THIS IS (Your Vessel’s Name) WE ARE HEADING FOR .......... TODAY OVER". OR: "CUMBERLAND BASE THIS IS (Your Vessel’s Name) WE ARE ANCHORED AT .....FOR THE EVENING, OVER". You should wait by the radio at the above times until your vessel’s name is called, then answer, after depressing the transmit button on the microphone, wait for a couple of seconds before answering. Cumberland will call you at the above times every day. If you fail to answer either call you will have to call Cumberland at the earliest opportunity. Should a two-way, for any reason become inoperative, every attempt must be made to notify base by either calling into an Island Resort and phoning, or asking another yacht to relay your message.

DAILY RADIO SCHEDULES ARE FOR YOUR SAFETY AND SHOULD BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY

IF YOU FAIL TO CONTACT US ON TWO CONSECUTIVE SCHEDULES,

A SEARCH OPERATION WILL BE INITIATED AT YOUR COST. How Family Or Friends Can Contact You If friends or family need to contact you during your charter we suggest that they contact our office on 1800-075101 (61-749-467526) before 9.30 and 2.00 every day and we will relay the message during skeds and you can contact them direct.

Cumberland Information Manual - Page 16 Anchoring

Your vessel is supplied with a primary and in some cases a secondary anchor and chain as designated by the Queensland Department of Transport - Harbours and Marine Division. ONLY use the secondary anchor if instructed by Cumberland. Your operating time daily is between 8.00am and 4.00pm. Cruising outside these times is extremely hazardous for the vessel and crew. Your vessel insurance will be voided and you will breach the charter agreement.

YOU MUST BE ANCHORED EVERY DAY BY 16.00 HOURS (4.00pm) Once you have safely negotiated your anchorage you will sleep soundly knowing you have properly laid your anchor. To the layman, anchoring is about the simplest thing anyone could do - Not SO!! It is not difficult, but must be done correctly. Allowance for the tidal movement is the most important factor. Also ensuring that the chain does not foul the anchor is important. If you come into an anchorage at high tide you must allow for the fall in the tide leaving enough water under the vessel. Also be aware that if the vessel swings as the wind changes it may move towards the shoreline into shallow water. If you anchor at low tide make sure you have enough chain out to allow for the rise in the tide. The simple, straight forward procedure to anchor properly is: 1. Check in your "100 Magic Miles" guide and the approved anchorages (in this manual) that

your chosen anchorage is suitable and read all instructions. 2. PULL THE DINGHY ALONGSIDE THE VESSEL or use the davits if your vessel is fitted

with them - to avoid the dinghy painter (tow) line fouling the propeller. Motor your vessel into the anchorage. Choose the position at which you would like to anchor and measure the depth of water. Move very slowly and have a lookout posted at the bow. (Polarising sunglasses will help you see the reefs). Watch out for reefs and coral heads.

3. If the tide is going out, calculate how much the water will fall from your tide tables.

Ensure you will have enough water at low tide. 4. Point your vessel into the wind and when you come to a complete stop LOWER the

anchor and while the chain is running out move SLOWLY astern. Your vessel will probably drift astern in the wind or if necessary use a LITTLE reverse. When you have enough chain out (a minimum of four times the depth of water at high tide or 30 metres – whichever is greater) - secure the winch and SLOWLY motor astern to bed the anchor.

3. Check that you have sufficient water under the vessel, that you have sufficient chain

out and that you have 360 degrees of swinging room. You are now anchored for the night.

Retrieving the Anchor Pull in your dinghy. Motor slowly forward to take the weight off the chain. Place the chain on the winch and raise the anchor - it should break out easily. If the anchor is stuck, lift the chain until vertical, then secure the CHAIN TO THE BOLLARD and SLOWLY motor forward which should pull the anchor out. Haul up the remaining chain and anchor. Clean the anchor with water if muddy.

Page 18: Cumberland Charter Yachts · leading boat book outlets or from Cumberland Charter Yachts. ... Airlie Beach is the mainland commercial centre for the Whitsundays offering a range of

Cumberland Information Manual - Page 17 Fouled Anchor

Should your anchor become fouled in the coral reef, it will be very difficult to remove. You may be able to free the anchor if you, or one of your party is skilled in snorkelling and can follow the chain down and help to free it. If you are unable to free by diving, you may be able to free the anchor by 'GENTLY' powering over the anchor, pulling the anchor out backwards.

Never try to pull the anchor out with the chain on the winch. Make sure the chain is on the bollard first.

If all attempts fail, please advise Cumberland Base. If you have to let the anchor go take careful note of the position and buoy the line for later recovery. The recovery of anchoring gear is at the expense of the charterer. Do not cut the rope or chain but let it all go with the buoy. Advise Base Immediately. Difficulties If your planned anchorage will be unsuitable in the weather conditions forecast we shall advise at radio schedule time in the morning. If you find that after you have anchored for the night and the weather changes you MUST remain at that anchorage and under NO circumstances attempt to move after hours. It is better to endure an uncomfortable night than risk a major problem. If anyone in your party is seasick, take them ashore in the dinghy.

TO REPEAT: NEVER MOVE AROUND AFTER HOURS. The anchors and cables are oversized and are more than capable of holding the vessel in most conditions. Letting out more chain will assist and setting an anchor watch will be reassuring to the crew. How Much Chain?? To calculate the length of chain you should have out, allowance must be made for the state of the tide. If you anchor at low tide you must allow enough chain for the rise at high tide. If you anchor on high tide you need to allow enough water under the boat for the fall. Anchoring procedure will be explained during your boat brief - but remember - if in doubt let it out. Cumberland recommends 30 metres of chain as a minimum amount at each anchorage. However, you will have to let out a lot more at some anchorages - these will be explained during your brief.

General rule is - always 30 metres or 4 times the maximum depth in

the deeper anchorages.

Your departure time will restrict the choice of anchorages for your first night. To begin your holiday on a relaxed note we suggest you do not attempt too much on the first day. Suggested First Night Anchorages Anchorage Name Location Nara Inlet Hook Island Macona Inlet Hook Island Cid Harbour Whitsunday Island Stonehaven Hook Island Other Suggested Overnight Anchorages Funnel Bay Mainland Airlie Beach (Free CCY Mooring) Pioneer Bay (Mainland) Woodwark Bay Mainland Abell Point Marina (Fee Applies) Mainland Mooring Procedures At some of the resorts you will visit you will need to pick up a mooring. Each mooring is in two parts, the mooring buoy and the smaller pick-up buoy. Motor slowly towards the mooring, pointing into the wind. Using your boathook bring the pick-up buoy on board. The pick-up buoy has a line attached to the mooring chain. Pull the chain on-board and secure to the bollard. NEVER SECURE THE VESSEL BY THE PICK-UP BUOY LINE, ALWAYS THE CHAIN. Public moorings are slightly different in that they do not have a pickup buoy. Follow the procedure set out above but pickup the large loop at the end of the mooring line. Abell Point, Hamilton and Hayman Island Marinas The marinas at Abell Point, Hamilton and Hayman Island are the only areas where you may bring your vessel alongside. In strong wind conditions you may have some difficulties so if you are unsure of your ability in getting the vessel in and out of the berth ask the marina staff for assistance. Approach the berth SLOWLY and have lines ready for mooring. All lines must be UNDER the safety lines / pulpit or pushpit and secured to the cleats, fore and aft. Remember it is harder to stop a vessel than to increase speed. As you come alongside have your fenders at the point of maximum beam below the gunwale rubber with the bottom touching the water. Secure the mooring line to cleats on the marina arm and where line permits run lines from each marina arm to the vessels centre cleat. Secure the dinghy close to the vessel so it does not cause inconvenience to others.

Cumberland Information Manual - Page 19 Emergencies

Cruising the Whitsundays is usually very safe and with the radio coverage in the area, you are never far from assistance should it be required. The major factors in safe cruising are for the charterer to take time in all activities and functions as well as adding a liberal amount of common sense. Your awareness of emergency procedures will enable you to act more quickly and efficiently should the circumstances occur. Prior to arrival all the crew should be familiar with the Safety Management Plan manual provided. Engine Failure Immediately advise Cumberland Base by Radio - Channel 81 or 82, or by Mobile Phone - 1800-075101. YACHTS - In the event of total engine failure use the sails to keep moving. When you are in a calm anchorage or if there is no wind you will be able to use the dinghy for propulsion. To use the dinghy - lower all sails and tie the dinghy ALONGSIDE front and back and use the outboard for propulsion. Use fenders between dinghy and yacht. Try to anchor if necessary. MOTOR CRUISERS - Advise Cumberland Base as above. You will probably have to use the dinghy for propulsion. See above for details. Fire Aboard If you are faced with the unlikely event of a fire aboard, the first rule, as in all emergencies, is to remain calm. The combustible fuels on board are diesel, outboard, unleaded and L.P.G. In many instances, a small fire can be smothered with a blanket or towel. If necessary, use the fire extinguishers that are on board. Fire extinguishers are very effective but messy, so keep calm and only use where necessary. If you have a fire in the gas system turn off the gas at the gas bottle if possible. In the event of an electrical fire, turn off the master switches and check for source of smoke and/or damage. Steering Failure Most vessels are supplied with an emergency tiller for use if your standard steering system fails. Steering failure can be caused by a broken cable or chain or by some foreign object jamming the system. If the steering suddenly becomes slack, a broken cable or chain could be the problem. If the steering jams, check to see if an obstruction can be seen and remove as necessary. If necessary you can tie the dinghy alongside and use the dinghy for steerage.

Cumberland Information Manual - Page 20 Emergency Procedures

Should a situation arise that places the vessel or it's occupants in danger, you should:- 1. Using Mobile Phone - Phone base on 0429 467658 - There is someone on this number 24 hours 7 days a week. 2. Ensure all aboard are wearing life jackets. 1. DO NOT leave the vessel unless absolutely necessary. 4. Refer to the Safety Management Plan manual onboard. If the situation is EXTREME and you or the vessel are in grave and imminent danger you should: 1. Using your two way radio go to Channel 16. 2. Call Mayday Mayday Mayday. 3. Advise vessel name, company name, vessel position, number of people onboard and the nature of the emergency. IT IS A CRIMINAL OFFENCE TO ISSUE A MAYDAY CALL UNLESS YOU ARE IN AN IMMEDIATE LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. Flares are provided to attract attention should your attempts for radio contact be unsuccessful. The vast amounts of vessels and aircraft in the Whitsundays ensure that you are never very far from assistance and most situations can be handled quickly without undue alarm. The dual purpose dinghy should ONLY be used if you are FORCED to leave the vessel. Grounding of the Vessel should not happen except in the case of carelessness. In the event of grounding, follow these procedures:- 1. Take down the sails. 2. Contact base immediately. 3. When instructed to do so check that the propeller and rudder are clear of hazards -

pull in the dinghy and attempt to motor off astern. 4. Use the dinghy to tow the vessel out. If unsuccessful: YACHTS - Heel the yacht to reduce the draft. Connect any halyard to the dinghy painter. Pull the mast over by manoeuvring the dinghy astern and attempt to motor off while heeled over. In the event of your being unsuccessful and the tide is falling, the vessel will most likely lay over as the tide recedes. 1. Notify base and seek assistance. 2. Pump and sponge the bilge dry, pump the toilet dry and close all sink and toilet seacocks. 3. Observe the area where the boat will heel over and - if necessary - use fenders and

bunk cushions to protect the hull from damage. 4. Lay out anchor to windward to keep the vessel in place until she refloats.

The safest way to enjoy your holiday is always think before you act. THERE IS ALWAYS PLENTY OF TIME.
