September 2017 NOW

THEN

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

His name is Bill. He has wild hair, wears a T-short with holes in it, jeans

and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of col-

lege. He is brilliant, kind of mysterious and very, very bright. He became a

Christian while attending college.

Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed, very conservative

church. They want to develop a ministry to the students, but aren’t sure how to

go about it. One day Bill decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans,

his T-shirt, and wild hair. The service has already started, so Bill starts down

the aisle looking for a seat. The church is completely packed and he can’t find

a seat. By now people are really looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says

anything. Bill gets closer and closer and closer to the pulpit and, when he

realizes there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet. Although

perfectly acceptable behavior at a college fellowship, trust me, this has never

happened in this church before! By now the people are really uptight, and the

tension in the air is thick. About this time, the pastor realizes that from way at

the back of the church, a deacon is slowly making his way toward Bill. Now the

deacon is in his eighties, has silver-gray hair, and a three-piece suit; a godly

man, very elegant, very dignified, very courtly. He walks with a cane and, as he

starts walking toward this boy, everyone is saying to themselves that you can’t

blame him for what he’s going to do. How can you expect a man of his age and

of his background to understand some college kid on the floor? It takes a long

time for the man to walk to the front. The church is

utterly silent except for the clicking of the man’s

cane. All eyes are focused on him. You can’t even

hear anyone breathing. The pastor can’t even

preach the sermon until the deacon does what he

has to do. And now they see this elderly man drop

his cane on the floor. With great difficulty he lowers

himself and sits down next to Bill and worships with

him so he won’t be alone. (see page 2)

Pastor Get-Togethers!

Pastor Chuck has planned four nights of get-togethers during the week of Sept 24,

2017, with 40+ people invited each evening. He has invited all members and attending

non-members. His goal is to grow closer together, and through your input, to renew

and equip the church family. If you have not received a letter by September 8, 2017,

please mention this to Pastor Chuck. YOU are INVITED!

Everyone chokes up with emotion. When the pastor gains control, he says, “What I’m about to

preach, you will never remember. What you have just seen, you will never forget.”

Be careful how you live. You may be the only Bible some people will ever read.

Lord, help us to be as accepting of others as you are of us. You accept us no matter how we

are dressed or what we have done. Open our hearts to accept others as quickly and fully in Love!

Lord, forgive my sins like I forgive other’s sins against me. Help us to become more like Christ. In

Jesus name I pray. Amen.

See you in church!

Pastor Chuck

We are celebrating 100 Years of Scouting in

Brookville September 1-3, 2017 at Golden Gate Park.

Troop 47 is the oldest continuously chartered Boy Scout

Troop in the state. We have found our original charter

documentation that was signed by Woodrow Wilson

back in 1917.

The Troop has 94 Eagle Scouts and will be welcoming many of them back for an alumni lunch on Saturday

September 2, 2017.

At 1:00 p.m. at the main stage gazebo in the park we will be reading various

proclamations provided to us from the City, State, and National dignitaries in

recognition of this accomplishment.

During the weekend we will be getting cub scouts, girl scouts and boy

scouts outside and active with fishing, and animal programs. We will

be learning about environmental sciences and sustainability.

We will have campfires both Friday and Saturday nights.

Scouts will get to practice water rescue at the pond as well.

The community is welcome to come out and join us for any or all

of this event. We will be camping throughout the park. Scouting

memorabilia will be on display in the Scout Shelter under the

water tower in the southern part of the park. The event will

close on Sunday morning with an interfaith service led by the

leadership of Community United Methodist Church.

Finally, the Brookville Historical Society will be open on Saturday, September 2, 2017 from

2:00-4:00 p.m. to show the Scouting display they have pulled together related to Scouting in

our Community. We hope to see you there!

Discipleship

Earlier this year I changed my primary care physician; she strongly encourages me to do a yearly physical check-up!! UGH!

This morning I had my “Medicare Checkup”… lots of questions to answer, things to write and pictures to draw. Though I have been on Medicare for numbers of years, I have never had this test before! It was to check up on my physical and emotional health.

All of which makes me wonder about my spiritual health... and I challenge you to wonder about yours as well.

I would like to share with you parts of an article that I read this afternoon:

“ Not long ago, a seasoned marathoner had just crossed the finish line with an impressive time when he suffered a heart attack and died. From the outside, he looked to be the picture of health, but a fatal condition was hiding on the inside.

Every one of us needs an occasional visit to the doctor for a checkup to make sure everything is working alright and that we don’t have an unknown serious internal condition.

The same is true with our spiritual lives. As creatures of habit, we tend to go through life on autopilot. We often miss clues that indicate that our spirit is not enjoying the good health that God created it for.

In the same way that the doctor puts us through a battery of tests to diagnose potential physical problems, God has given us a process of evaluating spiritual problems in our lives:

‘But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,

faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.’ (Gal 5:22-23)

Each of these is a characteristic of the Holy Spirit’s active presence in our daily activities.” … written by Scott Williams for Family Life

Each of these will be discussed in our Believe Series that begins on Sunday, September 17.

After church, you will be treated to a lunch downstairs and from 12:37-1:45 we will be discussing these attributes of a Christian. Each of us should gain some diagnostics that will ensure us that we are spiritually healthy.

Won’t you join us to study God’s Word together for good spiritual health, to eat together, to praise God together, and to be amazed at what good things are going on in our fellowship together???

Blessings and peace,

Karen Osswald, for
