Handmade at a Rehabilitation Centre by leprosy affected, disabled or disadvantaged people.

NEW SADLECreating sustainable livelihoods by developing opportunities for marginalised and disadvantaged producers.

Based in Kathmandu, New SADLE is a not-for-profit organization that helps rehabilitate people affected by leprosy.

It gives training and employment for socially disadvantaged artisans with leprosy, polio and disabilities.

New SADLE provides free medical services and help to its artisans. It provides handicraft skills that can lead to sustainable jobs.

It manages a nursery, a medical centre, two mobile health clinics, a hospital and two homes for new people in need.

New SADLE is a member of the World Fair Trade Organisation.

PRODUCER SPOTLIGHT

Chameli Yadav is 31, and was born into a poor family. She’s the eldest daughter among three children.

Her father died when she was young and her mother remarried and had 8 more children.

Chameli grew up taking care of her many small sisters and brothers. They only had a little land and did not have enough to feed the whole family. As a result, she used to beg for food and money.

Dal, a health worker at a local clinic diagnosed her with leprosy when she was 9. Family members and others in her village would not have anything to do with her.

Dal helped her to collect some money to send her to Green Pasture Hospital in

Pokhara, for the treatment. She stayed there and took medicine for 2 years to cure her from leprosy.

There she fell in love with Basu who is also a leprosy patient. He used to work in the paper section of New SADLE located in Pokhara. They got married and moved to New SADLE, Kathmandu when the paper section moved to Kathmandu.

Now, Basu runs the paper workshop by himself. Chameli works as a batik painter and now they earn a good income.

They have two sons, Simon 15 and Ananta 8. They both go to Lovely Angel English High School run by New SADLE.

Chameli Yadav is happy and thanks New SADLE for her better life.

McKean Rehabilitation Centre ThailandProviding healthcare and disability services to marginalised and disadvantaged people.

McKean Rehabilitation Centre is near Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand. It works in partnership with government health workers to find and treat new cases of leprosy. This strengthens health services in the northern and western border regions of Thailand. McKean provides assistive devices and vocational training to people affected by leprosy and disability.

McKean cares for and integrates patients with leprosy, disabilities and age-related problems. It's recognised as the centre providing leprosy expertise in northern Thailand. McKean provides residential treatment and rehabilitation for marginalised or displaced disabled persons. This includes training in activities to promote sustainable livelihoods.

In recent years, McKean has pioneered the development of multi-tiered aged care for elderly folk in the region.

Electrocuted at age 15, Sunthorn suffered burns when the metal he was welding hit a powerline.

He first received treatment for burns at a government hospital for 8 months. Surgeons there recommend he attend McKean for further surgery and rehabilitation.

"I knew McKean was a leprosy place. I didn’t have any stigma toward people affected by leprosy or fear."

Sunthorn had skin grafts and tendon transfers by Australia's Dr Grace Warren. She took parts of tendons from his legs

and attached them into his arms to restore movement in his hands. In fact he had 20 different procedures and many months of rehabilitation.

The hospital physio helped Sunthorn join a trade school where he learned to paint. He completed 10th grade through a correspondence school while he was at trade school.

Accepted into the craft department at McKean, Sunthorn's been working there for 24 years. He was able to borrow money from McKean to build his own house. He's now paid back the loan.

NISCHAL’S STORY

Thulimaya developed leprosy at the age of 21 but did not know what it was. The loss of feeling in her hands and feet led to the disintegration of her fingers. She has spent a lifetime hiding her hands.

She felt so depressed and asked herself "where did I get this disease?" She cried so much.

Her husband abandoned her. She lived in fear until she found the Anandaban hospital and received treatment.

At the Self-Care Unit she learned about leprosy, how to care for herself and how to cook and clean without getting injuries.

Then her 6 year old son Nischal developed blisters on his knee and foot. She brought

him to the hospital for leprosy treatment. Scared at first, he now lives with the loss of feeling and takes care not to get a disability.

Nischal did not tell his friends so he has not suffered the stigma and rejection that often occurs.

Thanks to your support, Nischal received a scholarship and studies at school.

He is now in grade 6 and has a bright future. Nischal wants to be a doctor.

JOAO’S STORY

Joao lives in Dili in Timor Leste. He has nine children, but three have passed away.

He first noticed a skin patch on his hand. He worried because he didn’t know what it meant or what he needed to do about it.

He went to a traditional healer, who gave him something to drink but it did not help. But then a Leprosy Mission doctor gave him some medicine.

"I am thankful that because of The Leprosy Mission I still have one working hand."

Thanks to you, Joao has his own small business and can support his children.

Your support means that The Leprosy Mission could invest in his business and help him earn his own money. His home

was bombed in the 1975 Indonesian invasion of Timor Leste. and he had to start again from zero.

"I was careful with my money so I could rebuild and support my children."

Joao became blind from an accident at work. A tile flicked up and hit his right eye. His eyes are swollen and he has lost feeling in them.

"Thank you to the Australian people. If The Leprosy Mission hadn’t helped me I would still be trying to look for help through a traditional healer."

When Joao is not working in his kiosk or looking after his children, he looks after himself by practicing self-care.

Santa Bahadur (pictured) is a skilled tanner and leather worker. He lives in Sindhupalchok, northeast of Kathmandu Valley. It is in one of the most earthquake affected areas in Nepal.

He is part of a group of local villagers that hand craft leather goods from cow and buffalo hides. The leather is not dyed with chemicals, and they use traditional tools and methods. They export bags, mobile phone cases, sandal key rings and more around the world through the Nepal Leprosy Trust.
