CURIOSITY REWARDED.ARTPRIZE 2013 ANNUAL REPORT

WHEN ARTPRIZE® WAS FIRST ANNOUNCED IN

APRIL, 2009, EVERYONE WAS CURIOUS TO SEE

HOW IT WOULD PLAY OUT: CURIOUS WHO

WOULD SHOW UP, CURIOUS WHAT WOULD

SHOW UP, AND CURIOUS ABOUT WHAT IT

WOULD MEAN FOR THE FUTURE. SINCE THEN,

ARTPRIZE HAS GROWN WITH AN ENERGY

BEYOND ANYONE’S WILDEST DREAMS.

In 2013, ArtPrize experienced double-digit growth. With attendance estimates exceeding 400,000 visitors, ArtPrize saw more voters cast more votes for art than ever before. These numbers, as big as they may be, only tell part of the story...

Since 2009, ArtPrize has succeeded in minting—by the hundreds of thousands—an eager new

generation of art lovers. For nineteen days in early fall, artists and spectators from everywhere

come to Grand Rapids—a jewel box of a city already steeped in traditions of art, design and

innovation—to discover new work, challenge each other and to take part in a grand, glorious,

freewheeling and completely unpredictable conversation.

When we ramped up to the fifth ArtPrize in 2013, we doubled down on some key principles:

ArtPrize should be a place where artists are celebrated and where they can sell work, expand

networks and develop careers; it should be an environment to promote critical dialogue among

all stakeholders, and where education is a crucial cornerstone of activity. We hope you see these

ideas reflected in the pages that follow.

Looking ahead to 2014 and beyond, ArtPrize will achieve complete sustainability by continuing to

broaden, deepen and diversify our artist reach, our dedicated audience base and our primary

funding sources of corporate sponsorship, foundation and membership support.

It’s a rare privilege to steward this fascinating evolving experiment, and to witness first-hand

the profound, personal impact it has on the lives of so many.

Onwards,

Christian Gaines

Executive Director

Ideas, no matter how good, require an ecosystem to take root and become a start-up. Start-ups,

no matter the backing, are fragile and cannot make it alone.

When a start-up takes its first steps into sustainability, it is a vast network of peers, supporters

and fans who keep it on course. ArtPrize has been taking those steps from start-up to sustainable

non-profit. We are incredibly thankful to everyone who has played a role, big and small, in this

grand effort. The data contained within this annual report states clearly the impact of ArtPrize

on our community, and we hope you are as proud of it as we are.

While we are proud of the success, we must keep our eyes on the future. ArtPrize will remain

radically open and accessible. It will continue to reward risk and creativity. It will continue to

disrupt and challenge what has come before it, and now, in the wake of its fifth year, ArtPrize

will even challenge its own history.

Thank you for being a part of the ArtPrize story. Now, let’s make the next five years even more

exciting than the first.

Sincerely,

Rick DeVos

CELEBRATING AND SERVING ARTISTS Artists are given room and resources to take risks and to challenge themselves and others.

LINK SESSIONS

ArtPrize hosted a first-ever series of LINK SESSIONS during the 2013 event. The sessions provided real connections, professional advice and opportunities to ArtPrize artists through one-on-one sessions with working art professionals. More than 30 contemporary art and design professionals participated in 150 meetings to advise ArtPrize artists, who used their sessions for portfolio reviews, conceptual presentations, feedback and professional advice.

ARTIST SALES

In 2013, we added a feature that allowed artists to clearly identify that their entry was for sale. Potential collectors and fans could then inquire online about purchasing work. This feature stays live on the entry profile even after the event, helping interested buyers connect year-round. For artists using the feature, sales grew by 25%, driving the total percentage of artists selling work past 20%.*

CURIOSITY KNOWS NO BOUNDS Thanks to Education Days, thousands of students at ArtPrize embark on a lifelong relationship with art.

2013 ARTPRIZE EDUCATION PROGRAMMING

• Thanks to sponsor PNC Bank, Education Days brought over 10,000 students and 132 schools from across Michigan to ArtPrize 2013.

• Sessions were led by artists and arts professionals.

• The second year of Chair Camp included a series of hands-on workshops designed by Carla Hartman, Education Director of the Eames Office, where students create miniature chairs from recycled materials.

• Teacher packets on artprize.org gave educators the information they needed to create lesson plans based on the event.

• Grants from ArtPrize helped offset field trip costs.

• A multi-lingual promotion distributed to schools and the Grand Rapids Public Library encouraged students to visit with their families.

• Early Childhood Days included at-risk preschoolers who engaged with art through play while their caregivers learned how to use play as a teaching tool.

• K-12 Partner Programs for schools were designed by local arts and cultural institutions.

• A Youth Advisory Council made up of students from seven local high schools influenced programming for students under 18.

• Hands-on evening and weekend programs were offered for families.

ARTSTART: ONLINE COMPETITION FOR YOUTH INVITED ANYONE UNDER 18 TO INTERPRET THEIR ARTPRIZE EXPERIENCE THROUGH ANY MEDIA.

13

A COMMUNITY UNITED From museums to public parks and even an auto body shop, ArtPrize reintroduces us to our surroundings, enabling exploration and discovery. Volunteers and ArtClub members lead the way, making Grand Rapids an irresistible destination for visitors from near and far.

VENUES

• Venues opened their spaces to artists, coordinated their own shows and hosted all who visited their exhibition.

• In 2013, 168 venues took part, including five Exhibition Centers, four Showcase Venues and four Sponsored City Sites.

VOLUNTEERS

• 822 community volunteers came together to make the event run smoothly and create a welcoming environment in the city.

• A total of 13,142 volunteer hours were logged throughout the event.

CITY OF GRAND RAPIDS

• City government—at all levels—played a critical role in the success of ArtPrize. From clean streets to public safety, parks and transportation, ArtPrize truly represents an epic collaboration.

NAVIGATING WITH TECHNOLOGY

Artprize.org, our mobile interface, and a dedicated mobile app for Android and iOS enabled the public to:

• Access information about art, artists, venues, and events.

• Take part in the public vote.

• Share their thoughts and experiences at ArtPrize.

GETTING AROUND TOWN

• An Our Town grant from the National Endowment for the Arts funded walking paths that encouraged visitors to explore the art and the city.

• Thanks to a partnership with The Rapid, Grand Rapids’ public transportation system, ArtPrize visitors enjoyed 158,000 reduced-fare rides in 2013, up 58% from 2012.

EVENTS

• Official ArtPrize programming included speaker and juror events, panel discussions, welcome parties for artists, venues, sponsors and volunteers, televised award shows and announcements.

• In addition to the daily events produced by ArtPrize, there were outdoor concerts, performance art, lectures, parties, fashion shows —events of all kinds—popping up all over the city.
