• Benazir Bhutto, chairperson of the Pakistan People’s Party, was killed in a gunfire attack cum suicide

bombing minutes after she finished addressing an election rally at Rawalpinidi, Pakistan. She was laid to

rest to her father Zulfikar Ali Bhutto at the family tomb in Garhi Khuda Baksh in Nudero, her ancestral

home in Larkana district of Sindh. PPP named her son Bilawal to head the party but leaving the real

power to her husband Asif Ali Zardari. Nawaz Sharif heads Pakistan Muslim League & Imran Khan

heads “Tehreek E Insaf”.

• UN Climate Change Conference 2007 held at Bali & “Island of the Gods”, Indonesia. The Bali meeting

approved a “roadmap” for two year talks to adopt a new treaty to succeed the Kyoto Protocol beyond

2009, widening it to the US & developing nations such as China & India. The Kyoto protocol which

requires 36 industrial nations to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 5 % below 1990 levels is to end in

2012.

Presidential Elections scheduled in March 2008.

• Russia delivered its first delivery of enriched Uranium fuel to Iran in advance of the startup of the

27 Nation European Nation signed a landmark treaty to revitalize decision making after years of

wrangling on how much power they are willing to hand over. As per the European Union Reform

Treaty, the number of votes allocated to each member would be according to population size. The

President serves 2.5 year term. It replaces system where states take turns to hold post for six month.

• United Russia, the party supported by Vladmir Putin won landslide victory in the Parliamentary

elections. It secured 64 % seats in the 450 seat State Duma.

• New Jersey has become the first US State in four decades to abolish the death penalty.

Plan Document which envisages an average 9 % GDP during the first four year & 10 % during the

terminal year. The incidence of poverty is to be reduced by 10 percentage points by generating seven

crore new jobs. Overall Investment would be Rs. 36 Lakh Crore. NDC fixed the Gross Budgetary

Support (GBS) 115 % higher at Rs. 10 lakh crore, to help the states in ushering in an inclusive growth.

• SEBI approved introduction of new derivative products based on the interim recommendations made by

the SEBI committee on Derivatives headed by Prof M. Rammohan Rao.

• BSE announces launch of Sensex Mini Derivative Contracts from January 1, 2008. The announcement

came in immediately after SEBI allowed tradin gin mini contracts on both sensex & nifty with a

minimum contract size of Rs. 1 Lakh.

• India’s Foreign Exchange Reserve stood at 272 billion $ as on Dec 21, 2007.

• Cambodian PM Hun Sen arrived in New Delhi.

• India & Mauritius signed a MoU for the establishment of the Insitute of Diplomacy & Foreign Trade in

the island nation.

• The Union Cabinet approved the Gram Nyayalya Bill, 2007 with certain amendments. The legislation

involves appointment of about 6,000 trained first class judicial magistrates all over the country. Gram

Nyayalyas would be setup in every panchayat of the country except J&K, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh

& Sikkim.

• PM clears proposal to recruit 35 thousand personnel under the Indian Reserve Battalion for deployment

in naxal affected states.

• The Forest Act to give land rights to tribals & forest dwellers is applicable from January 1, 2008.

• 15 prominent public sector companies sign the “Transparency Pact” of Transparency International to

• The Senior Citizens Bill 2007 has been passed under which people who abandon their parents or neglect

their basic needs will have to face 3 months of imprisonment & a penalty of upto Rs. 5000. It also talks

increase in fine for Civic Offences. It asked the state governments to ensure that all local bodies switch

over to the “Unit Area Method” or “Capital Value Method” for assessment of property tax. In its sixth

report which dealt with local governance, the ARC, headed by senior congress leader & former

Karnataka CM Veerappa Moily, favoured clear delineation of functions of various spheres of the
