Washington mudslideOn march 22nd a disastrous event occurred in Washington. A mudslide killed at least now known 30 people, and 12 people missing. Unfortunately it was warned that a tragedy like this might happen. Scientist predicted the event.

Roswell shootingIn Roswell a city in New Mexico there was a school shooting. The shooter was a 12 year old boy. The boy shot 1 boy and 1 girl. Both were unharmed. The boy was told by a teacher to put the gun and let the class live. The boy listened and was taken to be tested on whether or not he had a mental problem.

March 28, 2014, Roswell, New MexicoAt a hearing held on March 28 is Roswell, the twelve-year-old boy accused of shooting two classmates has been found competent to stand trial. Due to the fact that he is only twelve years old, he can only be tried as a minor. The families of the injured victims attended the hearing. According KOAT news, one of the grandfathers said, “What do we all want? Justice to prevail, that gives everybody a satisfying heart.”Mason Campbell is being given mental health treatment. One of the victims of chance was shot in the shoulder. She was quick to recover and is at home. The other victim suffered damage to his neck, face and heart, severely damaging his vision. He stayed at the hospital for over a month and is recovering at home. When he came home most of Roswell turned out to welcome him.

Something nuttyIn Clovis, New Mexico a squirrel problem has started to arise. These squirrels are overpopulated and are annoying visitors. The visitors have decided to make non harmful traps to relocate these squirrels.

6 year old uses smarts.A 6-year-old Washington state girl is safe thanks to her street smarts — and her mother's sound advice — when two men tried to kidnap her in broad daylight from her own neighborhood.

Savanna Norman of Parkland, south of Tacoma, used the skills her mother taught her when a pair of men tried to grab her Wednesday afternoon as she crossed the street in front of her home.

6 year old uses smarts pt.2"I looked both ways, and there was no one coming but … then I went halfway across the street, two guys came out of nowhere," Savanna told KOMO-TV, which first reported the attempted abduction. “They grabbed me.”

Savanna said she screamed, ran, kicked and punched — just as her mother instructed for such a scary situation.

Mom Amy Norman said she saw the attempted kidnapping from her front window, and dashed out the door to help her daughter.

6 year old pt.3Norman was shaken up by the incident but remains proud of her girl. “I’m bearing with it as normal, but it was very scary for all of us,” she told KOMO-TV.

Police ended up catching the suspect, local resident Jakeel Rashon Mason. He was booked into the Pierce County Jail for investigation of unlawful imprisonment, and is being held on $150,000 bail.

His first hearing is scheduled for May 8.

Extreme drought in New Mexico

New Mexico has entered into its sixth consecutive year of drought. 2014 has been the driest year on record with precipitation in January and February less than 20% of the average. Along with the lack of rain, snowmelt is less than what it used to be. Normally snow melts and the run-off feeds streams and rivers. Recently greater amounts of snow are sublimating instead of melting in to the streams and rivers. This year’s snow run off is predicted to be 31% of the average amount.

Extreme drought pt.2 The lack of rain make farming and

ranching extraordinarily difficult. In addition, farmers can’t take water from the Rio Grande because if the water levels get to low it would mean extinction for the Rio Grande Silvery Minnow. This among other things has pushed back the irrigation season from March to late May. Because of this, some farms with less water rights may not even get water.

Extreme drought pt. 3 New Mexico’s most famous product chili has been

hit hard. The lack of water, along with inadequate laborers, has caused a major reduction in chili production. Dairy farmers are finding that their job has gotten considerably harder. The weather is actually ideal for cows to give milk, but the lack of water means that farmers need to import more feed for their cattle. Due to the drought in the mid-west, farmers have to order their feed from as far away as Canada. One of the only bright spots in the farming industry is the booming pecan harvest. This major harvest was possible by opportune rains in September and sophisticated irrigation systems.
