Hours Of God

RERC 2‐15a I can recognise Mary's significance within the Catholic tradition and I know that celebrating her feast days and praying to God through Mary can enrich my life.

I can list, and I am beginning to understand, the significance of the major feast days of Mary celebrated in the Catholic Church:1 January ‐ Mother of God 11 February ‐ Our Lady of Lourdes 25 March ‐ Annunciation31 May – The Visitation 15th August ‐ The Assumption of Mary8 September ‐ Our Lady’s birthday 7 October ‐ Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary 8 December ‐ Immaculate Conception

I know why Mary is honoured as the model of all Christians and I can pray to God as Mary prayed using the words of the Magnificat.

I can recognise some icons and images of Mary and identify the symbols therein (e.g. Mother of God, Mary of Perpetual help, Our Lady of Czestochowa, Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Fatima.

Class – Children should prepare the class altar. It should be dressed with a purple cloth, a bible, a candle (Jesus is the light of the world), an Advent wreath, and the beginnings of a crib. Revise the meaning of the word ‘Advent’. The word ‘Advent’ goes back to the people who spoke Latin in ancient Rome. The word simply meant ‘to come toward’. ‘Venire’ means ‘to come’ and ‘ad’ means ‘to’ or ‘toward’. Today when people use the word ‘Advent’ they use it to talk about something that is coming. Advent for Christmas means the coming of Jesus. It is a four week season that comes before Christmas.

Class – Children will brainstorm how many Marion feast days that they can remember and when these are celebrated. Children will then complete the worksheets attached ‘Marion Feasts Days’ using a liturgical calendar. http://www.sces.org.uk/calendar-2.htmlDiscuss the feast days and what it is we are celebrating. Explain to the children that they will be focussing on two of these feasts in preparation for Christmas.

Class – Read from the Bible the story of the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38). Show the children the famous painting by Carlo Crivelli, (attached to planner) Teacher could supply more copies or put a large copy on the board for the class to see. Ask them to complete the worksheet attached. After completing the worksheet watch the educational video on this famous painting using the link below. http://preview.channel4learning.com/espresso/clipbank/servlet/link?macro=setresource&template=vid&resourceID=3100Discuss Mary’s bravery and faith at saying ‘Yes’ to God.

I know the feast day of the Assumption is celebrated on 15 August as a Holyday of Obligation and I understand that we celebrate Mary’s assumption (being taken up), body and soul into Heaven, at the end of her life on earth.

Class- Read and discuss from the Bible the story of the Visitation (Luke 1: 39-56). Play the video clip of this feast day from the following website:http://www.wingclips.com/movie-clips/jesus-of-nazareth/mary-visits-elizabethArt and craft activities can be found at the following website:http://hennypenny.ourjunction.com/docs/ntdocs/babyjohn2.pdf

Class - Talk about how you greet others when you meet them: when you arrive at school, meeting people back from holiday, coming home, or just bumping into others at the shops. What makes a good welcome? Mary feels so relaxed and safe with Elizabeth that she shouts out a prayer of thanks to God. Read ‘The Magnificat’ (Luke1:46-55). The children should understand that this is our prayer as well as Mary’s. (Copy of prayer attached to planner). Children should put the main points of the song into their own words and then illustrate this for a display? It seems that Mary spent at least three months with Elizabeth. In what ways do think this was a very important time for her? Suggestions might include: the huge risk it was; Mary wasn't anybody special; people wouldn't listen; Mary comes only from Galilee, which was the poor part of Israel; Mary wasn't even married; Mary was very young and scared, She wanted to take care of Elizabeth, she wanted to wait for the birth of John the Baptist.

Class – Discuss the Assumption of Mary. Discuss the word ‘assumption’. On this day Our Lady's was assumed into Heaven and crowned Queen. Read from the Bible (Revelations 11 & 19). "The woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars." We celebrate a special favour that God gave to Mary, our Mother. The Assumption means that Mary was taken up into the glory of heaven not only with her soul, but also with her body. St. Juvenal, Bishop of Jerusalem, at the Council of Chalcedon (A.D. 451), made known to the Emperor Marcian and Pulcheria, who wished to possess the body of the Mother of God, that Mary died in the presence of all the Apostles, but that her tomb, when opened, upon the request of St. Thomas, was found empty; wherefrom the Apostles concluded that the body was taken up to heaven. According to tradition, however, Our Lady's tomb was not exactly found empty; lilies and roses were found where her body "should" have been. How is Mary’s Assumption different from Jesus’ Ascension? God assumed Mary into Heaven while Jesus rose into Heaven by His own power.Children can make origami lilies and roses to place on the class altar.http://www.tricklife.com/view.php?id=5http://www.origami-fun.com/origami-lily.html

Reign of God

RERC 2‐22aI have explored the call to forgiveness and reconciliation and have reflected on how this can restore my relationship with God and others. I can put this understanding into practice in my relationship with God and others.

I can recognise the importance of reconciliation and forgiveness in the early Church (James 5: 3‐16).

I have explored the forgiveness of sins shown by Jesus and the forgiveness shown by some Christians in the face of violence, and I have examined examples such as St Stephen’s martyrdom, St Maria Goretti and her mother and Pope John Paul II’s response to his attacker.

I can use these examples to challenge me to show forgiveness and to show that reconciliation with God and others is inspired by Jesus an I understand that this prepares us for life in Heaven.

KEY VOCABULARY: The Assumption, Holyday of Obligation, assumed body and soul into heaven, Mother of God, Our Lady of Lourdes, Annunciation, Our Lady’s Birthday, Our Lady of the Rosary,Immaculate Conception.

Class – Read from the Bible the story of the arrest and stoning of Saint Stephen (Acts 6:8-15 & Acts 7:54-60). Children should discuss the text and complete the worksheet attached to planner.

Class – Explain that today we are going to learn about the life of Saint Maria Goretti. The main focus of this lesson is forgiveness in the face of violence. In our previous lesson we learnt this from Saint Stephen. The children will complete the attached story of Saint Maria Goretti, in groups of 4, as a reciprocal task.

Class discussion should follow. Would you be able to forgive someone who acted in such a violent and brutal way? Do you think he was really sorry for what he had done? How do we know this? Can someone who commits such a terrible crime really change? How do you think Maria’s mother felt when she was present at her child’s canonization?

Home – Children should carry out a research homework task on the assassination attempt of Pope John Paul II. Take home sheet attached.

Class – Teacher should recap on previous lessons and homework activity about forgiveness in the face of violence. Explain that the children are going to write and decorate a prayer asking God to end global conflict and help us to find peaceful solutions to these problems in our world today. The following website allows the children to see where there is conflict in our world today.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ongoing_military_conflicts

The children will have some knowledge about the life of Saint Stephen.

The children will understand that God calls us to ask for forgiveness and reconciliation to restore their relationship with God.

The children will have some knowledge of current global conflict and how we can offer prayers of intercession to ask God to help those involved find peaceful solutions.

I am familiar with the term “Original Sin”, which means that all human beings come into this world in need of the grace of Christ to be saved.

I know that sometimes we struggle to do good because something pulls us towards sin (Romans 7: 14‐25) and that this is a result of Original Sin.

I know that the Church offers me the Sacrament of Reconciliation to restore my relationship with God and others and I have been offered opportunities in school to prepare myself for, and to celebrate, the Sacrament of Reconciliation throughout the year.

Class – Read from the Bible Romans 5:12. ‘Sin came into the world through one man, and his sin brought death with it. As a result, death has spread to the whole human race because everyone has sinned’. Discuss - Who is the man that St Paul is referring to? What sin did he commit? What happened after he committed this sin? Why are we made accountable too? Teacher should explain that this sin is called ‘Original Sin’. It is something that we are all born with. It is an inherited sin. It is called ‘Original Sin’ because it originates from Adam (the first man). After committing this sin he because wholly human as we are now. This sin is absolved through baptism. The children may ask about infants born who die and have not been baptised. It was previously taught that these souls would go to ‘limbo’. This is no longer the teaching of the Catholic Church who says that as these souls have not committed any personal sin and we trust in the mercy of God. Teacher’s can refer to the Catholic Catechism on this subject.http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/para/1261.htm

Class - Read from the Bible the story of the disobedience of man (Genesis 3:1-7). Discuss the text. Is this the end of the story about Adam and Eve? Did God expel Adam and Eve from the garden without providing a way for them to repair their relationship with Him? Or did God make a way for people's sin to be taken care of?Children should complete the attached worksheet ‘Adam and Eve – Original Sin’.

Parish – The priest will be invited to the school to administer the sacrament of reconciliation to the children during Advent in preparation for Christmas. The teacher will explain the importance of receiving the sacrament at this time in the liturgical year and help the children to prepare to receive this sacrament through a time of prayer, meditation and reflection.

KEY VOCABULARY: repentance and reconciliation, human disposition to sin, Thomas the Doubter, Denial of Peter, Martyrdom ,global conflict, Original Sin, Sacrament of Reconciliation, restoring my relationship with God

RERC Planner: Advent& Christmas Primary 7I know that God has given me the freedom to make choices about the way I live my life. I have reflected on how the decisions of my conscience affect my relationship with God and others.

I will experience temptations in my life which are contrary to Gospel values.

I know that God has given me the ability to resist temptation through prayer and sacraments and I understand the link between my moral life as a Christian and faithfulness to the liturgical life of the Church.

I understand that, in praying the Our Father, I am asking for God’s help in resisting temptation and being delivered from evil which is the absence or opposite of good.

I understand that human life is sacred and I know that God commands me, out of love, to show respect for every human life from conception to natural death.

I know that God alone is the author of life and, therefore, that we cannot remove or destroy life. (Fifth Commandment: You shall not kill.)

possible the teacher could bring articles or newspaper cuttings which show temptations and decisions made by people in daily life. Discuss their alternatives.Explain to the children that because God gave us freedom of choice, every day we have difficult decisions to make.

Read from the Bible Luke 4:1-13. Discuss the text. Look at the painting by Duccio di Buoninsegna (c. 1255-1260 – c. 1318-1319) The Temptation of Christ on the Mountainhttp://www.abcgallery.com/D/duccio/duccio6.htmlIn groups the children should discuss how the artist has captured all the temptations set out by the devil. If possible, a smaller copy should be given to each child. The children should draw lines and write quotes from the Bible passage to highlight how the artist has encompassed all elements of this story in his painting. *Small copies for children which can be copied in black and white have been attached to the planner.

Class – Teacher should ask the children how God can help us to resist temptation. Which prayer do we have in which we specifically ask for God’s help with this? (The Our Father).

KEY VOCABULARY: temptation in the desert, resist temptation, delivered from evil.

Class – Read from the Bible Luke 1:39-45 (The Visitation). Discuss how even as a new life inside his mother’s womb, John the Baptist, already had a relationship with God, already had potential, was already full of life. The Bible clearly emphasises the sanctity of every human life, including the life of those in the womb. As Christians, we are bound to take a pro-life stance, and defend unborn children, whom God has made in his own image. Read Jeremiah 1:5. Discuss the meaning of this text. Revise the ten commandments. Focus on the fifth Commandment, ‘Thou Shall Not Kill’. What do you think that this means?

Class – Discuss the 6th commandment ‘Thou shall not commit adultery’. What do you think this means? It is important at this stage to stress to the children that they should not share personal experience and that this is about God’s plan for them. This commandment means that we should be faithful in all our relationships. This includes our friendships with each other and our chosen partners in life. Go on to discuss the 9th Commandment ‘Thou shall not covet your neighbour’s wife’. What do you think this means? What does covet

Then discuss Which commandments has David broken? David acts as if he has done nothing wrong- even to God!

So what does God do? (send message through the prophet Nathan)

What method did Nathan use to explain the sin? What were the consequences of what David had done? How important is a peaceful home life? What lesson should we take from this? (Be happy and

The Magnificat

My soul glorifies the Lord,my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour.

He looks on his servant in her lowliness;

henceforth all ages will call me blessed.

The Almighty works marvels for me.Holy his name!

His mercy is from age to age,on those who fear him.

He puts forth his arm in strengthand scatters the proud-hearted.He casts the mighty from their

thronesand raises the lowly.

He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty.

He protects Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy,

the mercy promised to our fathers,to Abraham and his sons forever.

Saint Stephen

The stories that you have read in class today come from the Book of Acts. Is this in the Old or the New Testament? ____________________

List below the qualities that St Stephen had that we could adopt in our lives.

St Stephen was very loving and forgiving to his enemies. This week at school if someone bothers you or hurts your feelings, try to act like St Stephen and forgive them.

Read from the Bible Acts 6:8-15 & Acts 7:54-60St Stephen was a young man when he was called to be a deacon of the early church. He was not that much older then you.He used to take care of the elderly, the sick, the orphans, the poor distributing clothes and food. He would also tell them about Jesus and how much He loved them even when they felt abandoned and wretched they were not alone. Stephen was persecuted for doing God’s work but he did not stop. He prayed for them instead.

St. Maria GorettiFeast Day: July 06

Born: 1890 :: Died: 1902

Maria was born at Corinaldo, Ancona in Italy into a poor but loving home and was one of six children. She was baptized the day after she was born. Her father Luigi Goretti was a farmer. Her mother Assunta, was a poor orphan girl who did not know how to read or write. Luigi and Assunta loved God, Mother Mary and each other.

Their oldest child, a boy died when he was just a baby. Although they were very poor, and life was difficult, Luigi and Assunta thanked God for His great gifts. Assunta lovingly taught her children about God’s great love, by her words and actions.

The children had no toys, so a rock or an apple was used as a ball to play with. Maria never had a single doll and they could not afford to go to school, but they were a very happy family that lived in the light of God’s grace.

When Maria was six, she played like other children, running through the grass, picking flowers, laughing and smiling. But instead of playing with her friends, Maria played more often with her younger brothers and sister, and kept them happy so they would not trouble their mother.

Then the family moved to the Pontine Marshes where Luigi, along with his partner Mr. Serenelli and his sixteen year old son Allessandro (Alexander), lived together on Conte Mazzoleni’s farm as tenant farmers.

By the time she was nine, Maria did the family marketing. She always did her errands quickly and returned home where she was needed. She was a friendly girl and everyone loved her. A cheerful grocer Giovanni, gave Maria an apple one day, after she had finished paying for her groceries. But Maria did not eat it.

Instead, she thanked Giovanni and put it in her pocket saying that her brother Allesandrino loved apples. Then he gave her a cookie, which again she put in her pocket saying that she would give it to her little sister Ersilia. Giovanni

RERC Planner: Advent& Christmas Primary 7finally gave her another cookie and said he would be very hurt if she didn’t eat it herself. So Maria not wanting to offend him, ate it.

A short time later, Mr. Luigi fell very ill and died, leaving Assunta to bring up her five children alone. At twelve, Maria was already very pretty. She helped her mother on the farm, in the house and with the care of the other children. She never complained because they were so poor. In fact, she cheered up her poor mother and was a great comfort to her.

She went to Mass every day even though it meant a two-hour walk. Maria received the sacrament of Reconciliation as often as she could. When she came home, she taught the children their prayers and told them Bible stories. Alexander who often joined the family for the rosary slowly began to notice how pretty Maria was.

He tried a few times to make Maria sin. She absolutely refused and did her best to avoid him. July 5th , 1902, was a hot summer day. Maria was alone in the cottage mending clothes while her mother worked on the farm and Mr. Serenelli slept under a tree.

Alexander asked Maria to come to him, and when she refused, he dragged her into a room. Maria was frightened of him and afraid that he would hurt her. When she struggled and tried to scream, he stuffed a handkerchief into her mouth and angrily stabbed her many times with a dagger and then ran away.

When they found her, Maria was quickly taken to a hospital but she died about twenty-four hours later. During her last hours she received Jesus in Holy Communion with great joy. She then told the priest that she forgave Alexander with all her heart, for the love of Jesus and hoped God would forgive him too.

Her only worry was for her mother. Alexander was sent to prison for thirty years. For a long time, he did not feel sorry for what he had done. Then one night Maria appeared to him in a dream, walking in a garden and offering him a bunch of Lilies. She said, she hoped he would come to heaven one day. From that moment on, he was a changed man.

He wrote a letter to the bishop, begging God’s forgiveness for the great sin he had committed. When he was freed from prison after twenty-seven years, his first visit was to the Goretti home where he asked Maria's mother for forgiveness. Then Alexander spent the rest of his life as the gardener in a nearby monastery.

Sin and Forgiveness: The story of David and Bathsheba(Adapted from 2 Samuel 11 & 12)

Have you ever disobeyed your parents? Have you ever felt like you did something so bad you could never be forgiven? Even adults break the rules sometimes. Just as your parents set rules for you to follow, our heavenly Father set rules, or laws, for us to follow. God gave us the 10 Commandments through Moses. These commandments, or laws, are just as important for us to obey as they were in Moses’ day. Think back over the 10 Commandments as we go through the story.

Just as your parents love you and provide you with things, God gave David more than he needed. David was King of Israel. God had given him the household of Saul. He had many wives and children. He had more riches than any man needed. One spring night while David’s army, led byJoab, were out in battle against the people of Ammon, David went out on his roof. From there he could see a woman taking a bath. She was very beautiful and he wanted her for his wife. David asked about her and found out that her name was Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite. David knew that she was married but sent for her anyway. He brought her into his room as if she were his wife. Bathsheba went home but soon realized that she was going to have David’s baby!Thinking he could keep anyone from knowing, David sent for Uriah from the battleground. He asked about the battle then sent Uriah home with a gift of food. David planned for Uriah to go home to his wife so that everyone would think that the baby belonged to Uriah. But Uriah refused to go home while his men were still in battle and unable to go to their homes. Finally David sent a letter to Joab telling him to place Uriah in the most dangerous place in battle.

Sure enough, Uriah was killed. Bathsheba mourned for her husband. After the mourning period was over, David married her. Surely now nobody would know what David had done. But someone did know what David had done. God knew and he was very displeased.

God’s prophet, Nathan, went to David and told him about a very rich man and a very poor man. The poor man had nothing in the world but a lamb which he loved and raised almost as a daughter. The rich man had large flocks of sheep. When a traveller came through, the rich man refused to prepare one of his flocks for the man. Instead he took the only thing the poor man had, the lamb, and prepared it for the traveller. David was very angry and said that the evil man who had done this should die and should restore fourfold what he took from the poor man.

Imagine how David felt when Nathan said “You are the man!” Nathan told him that God had given him everything and yet he had despised God’s law. He had killed Uriah and stolen the only thing he had, his wife. Nathan told David that God’s wrath would be on his house. Then David said “I have sinned against the Lord”. Nathan told David that he would not die but that what he had done would give his enemies something to use against him; therefore, the child was going to die. The child became ill and David fasted and pleaded with God for the child. He wrote the prayer in Psalm 51. David neither ate nor drank. On the seventh day, the child died. David was truly sorry for what he had done. David had done really bad things and had broken five of God’s commandments yet God forgave him because of what was in his heart. David was truly sorry for what he had done. Soon David and Bathsheba had another son and they called him Solomon and the Lord loved him.

The Magnificat

My soul glorifies the Lord,my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour.

He looks on his servant in her lowliness;henceforth all ages will call me blessed.

The Almighty works marvels for me.Holy his name!

His mercy is from age to age,on those who fear him.

He puts forth his arm in strengthand scatters the proud-hearted.

He casts the mighty from their thronesand raises the lowly.

He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty.

He protects Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy,

the mercy promised to our fathers,to Abraham and his sons forever.
