ECO124: OUR LOCAL DOLPHINS Thursday, November 4 | 10-11:30AM | In-Person, Zoom, On-Demand | Beaufort campus

Students will learn the latest research on dolphins that make the Lowcountry their home. This presentation features the research that USCB’s Marine Sensory and Neurobiology lab led by Dr. Eric Montie has learned. The USCB Marine lab has been using passive acoustics and visual surveys to determine baseline acoustic behav-ior, abundance, and distribution patterns in the May River estuary since 2013. Using photo-identification, the number of sightings of each dolphin per year is documented and can distinguish a resident from a migrant mammal. The research shared identifies when migrants arrive in our estuary and how these groups interact and use the estuary. Since dolphins are apex predators and serve as “canaries in the coal mine”, USCB’s research team monitoring is providing critical data about the ecology and health of the estuary.

ALYSSA MARIAN has been conducting research in USCB’s Marine Sensory and Neurobiology lab since 2017. She is currently the lab manager helping with funded projects and overseeing USCB graduate and undergraduate students. Her research focuses on how acoustics can be used to understand animal behavior and distribution, which may help monitor the health of estuaries.

ECO125: SHRIMP TALES: SMALL BITES OF HISTORY Tuesday, November 9 | 10-11AM | In-Person, Zoom, On-Demand | Hilton Head Island campus

“Shrimp Tales: Small Bites of History” captures the stories that swim in the salty souls of shrimpers who made their living fishing the waters of the Atlantic. Author and researcher Beverly Bowers Jennings spent a decade interviewing shrimpers and others associated with commercial shrimping to produce permanent exhibits for the Port Royal Sound Maritime Center and the Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head. This work served as the start for “Shrimp Tales,” a book that shows the old ways of shrimping evolving to the modern-day. It reads not so much like a comprehensive history, but something tastier than that - a few good stories, some compelling insights, a collection of fascinating facts, some recipes, and illustrations of tools of the trade.

BEVERLY JENNINGS Master Naturalist classes led to creating exhibits for the Port Royal Sound Foundation Maritime Center. Her book, “Shrimp Tales: Small Bites of History” with 320 pages and over 800 photographs, is a natural extension of those exhibits and 10 years of research.

HIS126: POSTWAR PERIODS IN AMERICAN HISTORY: CHANGE, CONTINUITY, ADJUSTMENT Wednesday, October 13, 20, 27, November 3, 10 | 5 sessions | 10-11:45AM | In-Person, Zoom, On-Demand | Beaufort campus

In the history of the United States, major wars have produced intended and unintended consequences. Wars do not allow for extended discussion and debate. Wars centralize decision-making. Wars accelerate social, econom-ic, cultural, and political change. Some decisions and some changes persist long after war ends; others become the object of challenge and adjustment. This course will consider four wars and focus on four postwar periods - the years following the Civil War, World Wars I and II, and the Vietnam War - to identify recurrent themes and, where possible, to draw lessons. This is not a course in military history. Rather, it is a study of the impact of war on American society. Students conclude with a consideration of our most recent “war-like” experience, the COVID pandemic, and inquire whether we might now, or soon, be living through another period of postwar adjustment. Available On-Demand Only MUSIC BY WOMEN COMPOSERS FROM THE 9TH TO THE 21ST CENTURIES

“Women wrote music, they wrote it well, and they wrote it against the odds”. - Anna Beer For centuries, genius has been thought of as a male preserve; women have been denied access to education in composition, to professional positions within the field of music, and to opportunities for their compositions to be heard by audiences. They have shown great courage in continuing to compose music in spite of these handicaps. This class will give an introduction to the wide range of first-rate music written by women composers, beginning with Kassia in the 9th Century and continuing through to the 21st Century. Much of this music will be unfamiliar and is rarely performed, but it deserves to be much better known. The class will include a discussion of women composers in the Classical, Musical Theater, Jazz, Folk, and Popular traditions.

This course will explore the matter of “church and state” from a variety of historical and contemporary perspectives with an effort to see how commonly-held views on this matter have evolved over the years. Among the authors we will examine will be John Locke, Thomas Jefferson, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, John Courtney Murray, and several lesser-known figures.

BRIAN CUDAHY, born and bred in Brooklyn, holds a Ph.D. in philosophy and teaches undergraduate courses at USCB. He has published widely on topics as diverse as the New York subways and religious history. His latest book, “From Blackmoor Lane to Capitol Hill,” analyzes the philosophy of the first Roman Catholic bishop of Charleston, John England.

REL101: THE ONLY PRAYER YOU WILL EVER NEED Monday, September 20, 27 | 2 sessions | 10-11:30AM | In-Person, Zoom, On-Demand | Bluffton campus

Many people are familiar with the Lord’s Prayer, but typically recite it and miss its extraordinary hidden treasure. This teaching prayer invites us into seven meaningful conversations with God as well as with others. Following the seven petitions of prayer, these conversations are about perspective, hope, trust, life, forgiveness and gen-erosity, self-awareness, and gratitude. They invite us to live with aspirations to grow as human beings, deepen relationships, reach across divisions, and understand our profound connection to others. This course will deal with the prayer as conversations with God and the most valuable conversations we can have with others. DOUGLAS FLETCHER, an Iowa native, received a B.A. from Drake University and Master of Divinity and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary. He served Presbyterian (USA)congregations in Tulsa, Austin and Hilton Head and taught Biblical studies at universities in Oklahoma, Texas and Zambia.

SCI120: THE CLEAN AIR ACT AMENDMENTS: TOUCHSTONE LEGISLATIONMonday, September 27 | 1-3PM | In-Person, On-Demand | Bluffton campus

The Clean Air Act was one of the most significant pieces of legislation in US history. Last amended in 1990, it became landmark literally cleaning up the nation’s air in a remedial effort applied to every major industry. It cleaned up acid rain, particulate pollution, and mercury. It largely cleaned up urban smog, vehicular emis-sions, and significantly shrunk the cancer-causing ozone hole. This class will trace CAA history and provide some anecdotes, insights and solutions, which could serve as a template for the US response to climate change.

VINCE ALBANESE has 40 years’ experience in the business of energy efficiency and air pollution control, serving as President of The Institute of Clean Air Companies, the national trade association dealing with energy production, and monitoring and control of air pollution.

SCI121: THE FUTURE OF ELECTRICITY GENERATION AND ENERGY PRODUCTION IN A REDUCED CARBON WORLD Tuesday, October 12 | 10AM-12N | In-Person, On-Demand | Hilton Head Island campus

The energy path forward has numerous possible twists and turns. South Carolina currently obtains over 50% of its reasonable cost electricity from four nuclear power plants in the state. The operating licenses for three of these 1970s vintage plants may be extended beyond 2050, but they cannot last forever. About 1/3 of SC electric-ity is used by Industry. Intermittent, non-dispatchable, renewable power creates a challenge to manufacturing competitiveness, especially with China. Most large auto manufacturers have announced plans to discontinue manufacturing gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035 and change production to electric vehicles (EV). Solar elec-tricity requires enormous plots of land and only functions during the day. Hydrogen is a clean fuel that can technically provide storage of energy for electric generation when solar is unavailable and replaces gasoline for transportation vehicles with no carbon emissions. This course provides students an overview of several of the challenging paths forward to EV’s, hydrogen and energy storage. DICK STORM, registered professional engineer and Williamson graduate, worked in electrical power generation for five decades and is founder of Storm Technologies, Inc. His specialty was large electric utility plants fueled by coal. He was involved in large combustion processes around the world with power generation facilities and also mining power for primary metals production. Employed over the years with Babcock & Wilcox, Flame Refracto-ries, Carolina Power & Light, Mobil Oil, Standard Pressed Steel & Inductotherm.

SCI122: NASA: CURRENT MISSIONS AND FUTURE HORIZONS Thursday, October 14 | 10AM-12N | In-Person, On-Demand | Bluffton campus

This presentation describes NASA’s current research, development, and mission activities in aeronautics, earth science, manned exploration, and unmanned space exploration (robotic probes, rovers, orbiting telescopes). Each of these primary areas of NASA’s focus will be explored with activities of both near-term and in the future.

Page 27: Curriculum FALL 2021

Finally, the overriding question of whether NASA will choose to emphasize robotic or human exploration in the future will be discussed. JACK HANSEN, PhD, spent most of his career helping lead research organizations in the federal government

(e.g., NASA) and universities (e.g., Penn State Applied Research Laboratory). Since retiring, he has written two books on the personal dimensions of retirement and worked with the OLLI National Resource Center on surveys of OLLI participants. He is also active in the OLLI at Furman University.

SCI123: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Friday, October 15 | 10AM-12N | In-Person, On-Demand | Bluffton campus

This course provides an overview of the history of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.), the methods employed to simulate intelligence by computer, some of the key accomplishments to date, and policy issues associated with the continued development of this field. Examples of the successful implementation of A.I. which will be described are playing such complex games as chess, controlling a remote spacecraft, scheduling the tasks of Mars exploration rovers, and autopilot capabilities for “self-driving” cars.
