EDU 101: INTRODUCTION TO THE TEACHING PROFESSION (2 Units)

Candidates who are training themselves to become teachers should understand what teaching profession stands for and its requirements. The concept ‘profession’ will be

examined by this course. The characteristics of the teaching profession in Nigeria will be composed with other professions in the world and especially in Nigeria.

EDU 103: PSYCHOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION (2 Units)

Developmental psychology as a branch of general psychology, traces the stages of development of the human organism from conception to adolescence. The dimensions of human development usually discussed include physical development, emotional development, intellectual development, linguistic and development and moral development.

EDU 105: SOCIOLOGICAL AND PHILOSOPHICAL FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION (3 Units)

This course focuses on sociological theories of great sociologist such as Plato, Aristotle, and Thomas Hobbes. It looks at the thought of the Roman Philosophers those of Renaissance and Reformation etc.

EDU 107: GENERAL METHODS OF TEACHING (3 Units)

This course introduces students to teaching as an activity. It lets students into teaching act through the shallow end. Thus, it takes students through the whole gamut of teaching by incorporating definitions and explanation of teaching and learning; elements of good teaching/characteristics of the ideals teachers; principles of learning; instructional planning; unit and lesson plans; formulating educational objectives; taxonomy of education objectives (the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains); factors underlying the choice of teaching methods; method/approaches to teaching; classroom management; and factors affecting teaching and learning.

EDU 109: INTRODUCTION TO CURRICULUM STUDIES (3 Units)

A general introduction to the concept of curriculum and theories of curriculum design. Emphasis on organization and management of the teaching and learning process.

EDU 111: SUBJECT METHODS (2 Units)

The concepts of teacher and learning objectives in teaching method of teaching of the various subjects (in the secondary school curriculum in Nigeria) the syllabus,

EDU 113: HISTORY AND POLICY OF EDUCATION (2 Units)

This course traces the development of formal education in the world. It pinpoints great men and women who have made contributions to the growth of formal education in Nigeria generally and in Nigeria specifically. It examines the growth of formal education in Nigeria since the time of the arrival of the missionaries. It also examines the problems that the present education system of Nigeria is faced and finds ways of solving such problems.

HED 202: ACCIDENT PREVENTION AND SAFETY EDUCATION (2 Units)

A study of acquire knowledge and skill for the emergency core of individuals; basic principles of prevention of accidents as applied to sports and games, control of an defences and understanding of individual during personal and community accident prevention.

EDU 204: CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION (2 Units)

The meaning and nature of curriculum process, planning and development, historical and educational foundation to the Nigeria curriculum factors affecting curriculum and planning designs and curriculum objectives the process of curriculum planning and development, curriculum designs and curriculum evaluation.

EDU 206: TRENDS IN EDUCATION (3 Units)

This course is concerned with structures in education from colonial era till date such as 6-3-3-4, 9-3-4, nomadic education, riverine education HIV education, ICT, etc.

EDU 208: PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION (2 Units)

The course focuses attention of philosophy of education paying attention to the branches of philosophy and their contributions to educational development.

EDU 210: MICROTEACHING (2 Units)

The meaning and processes of microteaching, role and uses of micro-teaching, objective and merits of microteaching. Processes involved in the designing and products of educational media, factors involved in the selection of educational media, educational media centers in Nigeria.

EDU 212: EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY (3 Units)

The concepts, history and role of educational technology, communication in teaching, educational media, educational design, selection and utilization, system approach to instructional technology, innovations in educational broadcasting.

EDU 214: SOCIOLOGY OF EDUCATION (2 Units)

The course focuses on the concept of sociology of education; it examines concepts such as socialization, family types, and functions of family in the society, it looks at deviant behaviour among students, causes and control of deviant behaviour.

EDU 301: TEACHING PRACTICE I (4 Units)

Students will be given guidance in the planning, methodology and evaluation procedure necessary for classroom practice. They should also undertake practical teaching in a post primary school for six weeks.

EDU 303: TEST, MEASUREMENT AND EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS (3 Units)

It familiarizes students with descriptive statistics and inferential statistics to the level of application of test for measuring differences between two means. The aim of the course is to guide students on how to prepare valid and reliable test. It also aims to teach them the use of statistics to describe behaviour of performance in a test. Areas to be covered include; the concept of measurement, types of test, use of test, planning a test, table of specifications, item analysis, types of validity and reliability, administration of test and scoring the types of standard deviation, Pearson, z-score, stamina, Pearson Product Moment and Spearman Rank Correlations.

EDU 305: RESEARCH METHODS (3 Units)

This course prepares the student teacher for research processes in education. It helps the students to understand the meaning of educational research and the processes involved in it, so as to become a teacher equipped with knowledge of carrying out simple researches into educational problems. This is a three-unit course and presents unit like the meaning of general research, the meaning of educational research, types of educational search and their procedures while students are not registered to compute any statistics in this course, they are rather expected to be able to interpret simple research data and present such in table to facilitate their knowledge in what they are expected to do in writing of the research project.

EDU 307: SPECIAL EDUCATION (2 Units)

The special education familiarizes students with the meaning of special education and its rationale. It gives an outline of different branches of special education, which comprise giftedness, physical impairment and blindness. This introductory course also discussed the educational opportunities of giftedness and impairments.

EDU 309: GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING (3 Units)

The nature and purpose of counseling, basic counseling orientation, the helping relationship role of the guidance counselor text and non text student’s appraisal as essential aids to understanding students.

EDU 311: EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY (2 Units)

The course examines the relationship between psychology and education, especially with regards to teaching and learning. Educational psychology is one of the fields of applied psychology. Course contents include psychology, its objectives and research methods; behaviorist theories of learning e.g. skinner, Pavlov, Thorndike and Premack and its applications for teaching and learning; cognitive theories of learning including language e.g. Piagets and Gestalt psychology and its implications for teaching and learning; attention initiation, modeling and appraisal e.g. Sandra (i.e. social learning) and its implication for teaching and learning, transfer of learning for learning and teaching.

EDU 402: EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION AND PLANNING (3 Units)

This is an introductory course to educational administration and planning participants in the course are acquainted with an overview of education administration, competences in skills required for effective school administration functions of the school administrations and development of competences in school administration. Key issues handled include theories of schools administration and organization theories, the general system theory, social system theories and other theories related, equity theory are also considered,

EDU 404: RESEARCH PROJECT WRITING (6 Units)

Theory and practice of project writing, choosing of research topic, preliminary writing of chapter 1. Review of appropriate literature, presentation, discussion of collected data, research report format, mini-project production and seminar.

This is a three-unit course and presents unit like the meaning of general research, the meaning of educational research, types of educational search and their procedures while students are not registered to compute any statistics in this course, they are rather expected to be able to interpret simple research data and present such in table to facilitate their knowledge in what they are expected to do in writing of the research project.

EDU 307: SPECIAL EDUCATION (2 Units)

The special education familiarizes students with the meaning of special education and its rationale. It gives an outline of different branches of special education, which comprise giftedness, physical impairment and blindness. This introductory course also discussed the educational opportunities of giftedness and impairments.

EDU 309: GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING (3 Units)

The nature and purpose of counseling, basic counseling orientation, the helping relationship role of the guidance counselor text and non text student’s appraisal as essential aids to understanding students.

EDU 311: EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY (2 Units)

The course examines the relationship between psychology and education, especially with regards to teaching and learning. Educational psychology is one of the fields of applied psychology. Course contents include psychology, its objectives and research

EDU 402: EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION AND PLANNING (3 Units)

This is an introductory course to educational administration and planning participants in the course are acquainted with an overview of education administration, competences in skills required for effective school administration functions of the school administrations and development of competences in school administration. Key issues handled include theories of schools administration and organization theories, the general system theory, social system theories and other theories related, equity theory are also considered,

EDU 404: RESEARCH PROJECT WRITING (6 Units)

Theory and practice of project writing, choosing of research topic, preliminary writing of chapter 1. Review of appropriate literature, presentation, discussion of collected data, research report format, mini-project production and seminar.

EDU 406: TEACHING PRACTICE II (4 Units)

Students will be given guidance in the planning, methodology and evaluation procedure necessary for classroom practice. They should also undertake practical teaching in a post primary school for six weeks

ENG 101: INTRODUCTION TO THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE I (2 units)

The origin and development of English, basic phonological and grammatical units of linguistic analysis – the sentence, the clause, the group/phrase, the word, the morpheme and the phoneme will be surveyed, including .their basic functions and positions in the sentence. The basic tools for studying English such as various dictionaries and thesaurus will be covered.

This is a practical course in writing for students specializing in English. The basic pre-requisites for good communicative writing: good handwriting, appropriate punctuation and good command of English are emphasized. Types of compositions, their formats, features and their functions: letters (personal & official, business), minutes of meetings, invoices and receipts, notices, invitations, advertisements etc, are to be practiced. The course emphasizes practical work by candidates on each type of composition.

ENG 103: PRACTICAL SPOKEN ENGLISH (2 units)

This course aims to improve the student’s speech production. Attention will bed focused on the correction of interference features in sentence and word stress and intonation. Individual development of an internationally intelligible educated. English will be encouraged. The examination will be practical and will involve speaking and listening.

LIT 108: DRAMATIC GENRES (2 units)

The focus of the course is to introduce students to the generic dramatic typologies such as comedy, tragedy, tragic-comedy, etc and provide relevant examples. It also attempts a working definition of these genres and underscores their strategic relevance to dramatic study and discourse. Works of major dramatists will be used as examples.

LIT 109: LITERARY APPRECIATION (2 units)

The course introduces students to literary appreciation with special emphasis on the three genres of literature and the figurative use of language in literature. It treats figures of speech like metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, metonymy, etc and demonstrates how they work in literary strategies.

ENG 110: INTRODUCTION TO ENGLISH LANGUAGE II (2 units)

The focus in this course shall be on the simple sentence, its basic and non-basic forms and the nitty-gritty of their formation to improve generally the writing capacity of the students. Some other basic grammatical items will also be discussed.

ENG 201: INTRODUCTION TO GENERAL PHONETICS/PHONOLOGY I (3 units)

This course is a description of the rudiments of phonetic/ phonological study of language. The organs of speech and the general features and processes of speech production will be covered including the air stream mechanisms, the phoneme principle, the segmentation of speech, the naming of the sound segments, minimal pairs and allophonic variation.

ENG 202: INTRODUCTION TO GENERAL PHONETICS/PHONOLOGY II (2 units)

This course will examine the nature of the supra-segmental aspect in relation to the phonematic aspect of the phonic material and its relative importance in human communication. Emphasis will be on the prosodies of stress, tone and intonation, their nature, representation, analysis and their general functions in human language.

ENG 203: THE ENGLISH SENTENCE (2 units)

This course is a descriptive functional study of the Syntax of the English sentence and clause. Definitions of the English sentence and clause will be evaluated; sentence types and structures, and clause types and structures will be examined and exemplified with different text types.

ENG 204: THE ENGLISH NOMINAL, ADJECTIVAL AND PREPOSITIONAL GROUP (3 units)

The course provides a detailed description of the constituents of the English Nominal Group based on systemic linguistics description. The meaning, nature, place and significance of the nominal group will be explained. Also the centrality and the potential complex of the nominal group will be exemplified. The structural possibilities and the grammatical functions of the nominal group will be carefully explained and illustrated.

LIT 205: AFRICAN LITERATURE (3 units)

The course aims to introduce students to the tradition of African literature with a special focus on the three basic genres of poetry, drama and prose friction. Particular attention will be given to the oral literary character of African literature before the written tradition. It will expose students to basic concepts and terms like epic, myth, legend, (auto) biography, narrative perspective, character and characterology, plot, setting, etc and give examples.

LIT 206: FORMS OF LITERATURE (2 units)

The course is a further exploration of the major genres of literature which include poetry, drama and prose fiction by focusing on their appreciation and application to daily life. Issues such as theme plot, setting, background and context as well as style and technique will be discussed using works form African and European traditions.

LIT 207: THEATRE WORKSHOP (2 units)

This is an intensive class production workshop incorporating drama, music and dance. Emphasis is on the process of producing plays for the stage. While the course is designed to guide students through the process of producing a play from the

principles guiding the choice of play to the performance, it may lean towards improvisation and experiment. The course is designed to teach students the theoretical framework of theatre production that will culminate in actual production of plays.

LIT 208: CREATIVE WRITING I (2 units)

The course introduces students to the practice of writing for creative purposes and the processes involved in the application of the imaginative capacity of the students. It will aim at tasking students’ creative abilities in preparation for future writing challenges at the end of their course. It is a practical course which will be based on the three basic generic types of poetry, drama and prose. It will involve course work and a practical project of reasonable length, observing the basic principles involved in creative writing relating to any of the genres, to be submitted at the end of the course.

ENG 301: ENGLISH PHONOLOGY I (2 units)

The major approaches to English phonological analysis: phonemic and generative; the English segmental phonemes, their names, classification, function and organization in English speech; allophonic realizations in phonetic environments in actual discourse; phonemic and phonetic transcription, basic features of generative phonological analysis; DF analysis of English sound segments.

ENG 303: THE ENGLISH VERBAL GROUP (3 units)

The course provides a detailed description of the constituents of English Verbal Group based on the Systemic Linguistics and Transformational Generative models. The treatment of the concept of ‘Group’ in TGG and Systemic Linguistics will be examined. The items realizing the Verbal Group and its structure will be examined in detail while its grammatical functions will be explained and illustrated. Students should be able to identify and analyze the various types of the verbal Group in continuous texts.

LIT 306: ORAL LITERATURE (3 units)

This course is a study of oral literature as a genuine object of literary scholarship. It attempts a critical definition of the contradiction in the term “oral literature” and establishes the harmonious relationship between the oral and written as against the binary relations thought to exist between the two traditions. It will also introduce students to the rudiments of field work as a basic compenet of data collection in oral literary scholarship.

The course deals with the literary tradition from its earliest beginnings in 1619 through its peculiar realities of enforced slavery development of the black aesthetics in the United States paying particular attention to the slave narrative, the emergence of the autobiography genre through to the Harlem renaissance and the Black Arts Movement / Civil Rights and the modern period.

LIT 311: CREATIVE WRITING II (3 units)

The course deals with the mechanics of creative writing of further consolidate students’ knowledge in the practice of imaginative writing. The focus will be on the three genres of poetry, fiction and drama and will involve intensive writing workshops as a template for distilling the creative potentials of students.

LIT 312: LITERATURE AND GENDER

This course focuses on the mutual relationship between literature and gender and how the two dialectically benefit from each other. It demonstrates how gender as a cultural determination is inscribed within literature. It also treats the historical development of literature and the gender dynamics inherent in literary history.

ENG 401: TOPICS IN ENGLISH GRAMMAR (3 units)

Examination of selected topics of relevance or currency in English grammar: co-ordination and subordination, apposition, negation, adverbials, thematic roles, sentence and paragraph connection, tense, aspect and modality.

ENG 402: ADVANCED ENGLISH COMPREHENSION (3 units)

The close comprehension of various textual forms in English including written and spoken texts, prose and poetry, formal and informal texts through close analysis of the lexical, syntactic, symbolic and structural communicative devices often employed by writers and speakers in various contexts and for various purposes – scientific, literary, political, dramatic etc.

ENG 403: DISCOURSE STUDIES (3 units)

The processes involved in discourse: participants, orientation, turn taking and repair mechanisms and the consequences of breaching them; features of the discourse: cohesion and coherence, thematic progression etc; practical analysis of different kinds of discourse such as classroom discourse, casual conversation, poems students essays, courtroom exchanges and plays, newspaper articles, editorials and other discourse forms.

This course explores the relationship between literature and new media technologies like the film, cinema, internet, photography and other multi-media or digital technologies and how they intersect with the literary process. The course will also focus on the relationship between the oral, written and printed words as well as secondary and tertiary orality, cyberspace, etc.

LIT 416: THE AFRICAN NOVEL (2 units)

The course focuses on the African novel as a fusion of African and European forms but is nevertheless an authentic literary form drawing its provenance in African oral cultures and expression. It traces the historical development of the novel in Africa, its themes, subject matter, characterization, techniques and multiple manifestations. Works of writers like Achebe, Armah, Ngugi, Mwangi, La Guma, Mahfouz, Iyayi, Ogot, Nwapa, Head, etc will be studied.

LIT 417: LITERARY THEORY AND CRITICISM (3 units)

The primary concern of the course is the study of modern literary theory and criticism paying particular attention to literary and critical terms. It will also focus on how literary theory interfaces with practical application through criticism using theories like formalism, structuralism, modernism, new criticism, Marxism, feminism, post-colonialism and post-modernism, etc.

ENG 418: LONGER ENGLISH POEMS

The course introduces students to forms of English narrative poems like the romance and the epic, their common features and characteristics. It will study in detail authors like Thomas Malory (Morte Darthur), Sir Gawain and the Greene Knight, etc and establish their relevance to the tradition of English letters.
