1. About the programme

1.1 Object The Master's programme in Economics and Business Administration consists of a single-subject Business Studies programme in Economics and Business Administration (MSc) that provides students with advanced theoretical knowledge of management processes in companies. The object of the programme is to develop the student’s skills in investigating, understanding and managing the organisational processes of companies in a complex, changing and often unpredictable world. Through the application of scientific methods, students are equipped with the necessary skills to be able to work in an independent and critical manner on the basis of an interdisciplinary approach and problem perception grounded in business economics. Students also acquire action competence through realistic project courses, in which specific problems are observed and analysed in a close interplay between theory and practice. Via the programme, students thus acquire an in-depth familiarity with relevant social scientific theories and methods, together with the skills to apply these in analyses of a number of self-selected issues of relevance to business management. The programme also develops the student’s skills on the basis of the project-based working form, supplementing these with enhanced competencies in presentation, argumentation, problem-solving, task performance, project organisation and project management, and the application of complex analytical tools via participation in a varied range of courses and forms of instruction. Through project work, courses and participation in thematic seminars during the Master’s programme, students work to achieve an academic progression and specialisation that will enable them to utilise research results within the subject areas of the programme. Students may moreover organise their Master’s programme on the basis of a defined sequence, while in parallel developing the practical, qualitative and quantitative business economics skills and knowledge required to perform independent and critical work within selected subject areas. The Master’s programme thus prepares students to perform complex and variable managerial and organisational tasks, and simultaneously develops students’ analytical skills to handle problems and situations that are unclear, complex or ambiguously defined. Students furthermore gain insight into different perspectives on the strategies of companies and their relations with the surrounding world, as well as of managerial and organisational processes that can provide a strategic and managerial foundation for a company’s various practices, including in connection with value creation, resources, innovation and change. Throughout the Master’s programme in Economics and Business Administration, a constant focus is maintained on developing the student’s knowledge, skills and competencies within company management and organisation, innovation and change, value creation, and internal and external relations, so that the student is able to play an initiating, co-ordinating, managerial or analytical role in relation to processes and practices in such diverse business areas as project organisation and development, strategic management, innovation and change, personnel management and staff development, resource management and market development. The study programme is aimed at employment in companies and organisations in both the public and private sector. The study programme has been designed with a view to qualifying the student for work in: • Organisation and management of strategic, personnel and specialist functions in private and public

sector companies and organisations • Mapping and analysis of the organisation and management of companies • Planning and implementation of innovation projects in companies and organisations, focusing on

the development of business areas and human resources

Page 6: Curriculum for the Master’s study programme MSc in ... · PDF fileVia the programme, students thus ... • Representing the interests of labour market and industrial ... ordinary

6

passed, Roskilde University will administratively approve the transfer of credit for these to the study programme at the University.

In cases where the advance-credited programme elements are for example not offered by the host institution, Roskilde University may at the request of the student undertake alterations in the approval of advance credit.

3. Programme elements

3.1 Courses These study elements will provide the student with theoretical and methodological knowledge as well as skills in the academic field of the programme. The student must be given academic preparation to focus on issues relevant to project work and the thesis. The course may take the form of lectures, classes, case work, workshops, etc.

3.2 Projects Project work is exemplary, problem-oriented and participant-managed, and is intended to develop and document the student’s skills in applying scientific theories and methods to work within a defined academic area. Project work requires the independent formulation of a freely-chosen issue within the framework of the curriculum. The project work takes place in groups of 2-8 students. The topic of the project work is selected by the students from among the topics and themes determined by the Study Board. In special cases, the Head of Studies may grant permission for a student’s project to be written or examined individually. 3.3 Project-oriented internship A student may apply to the Study Board for pre-approval to take a specially-designed, academically relevant, project-oriented internship which substitutes for individual, specified elements of the ordinary study programme. The project-oriented internship, which includes, inter alia, the compilation of an internship project report, corresponds to 15 ECTS credits. Once the application for pre-approval has been granted, the Head of Studies will assign a supervisor to the student. In its processing of the application, the Study Board must ensure that the student, through the project-oriented internship, achieves academic competencies which in scope and level correspond to the competencies that can be achieved through the ordinary study programme. 3.4 Thesis The Master’s programme includes a major independent study which is documented through the compilation of a thesis. In the thesis, the student must document knowledge and skills in applying scientific theories and methods to work on a defined, academic and relevant issue. The student must demonstrate skills in analysing, categorising, discussing, reasoning, assessing and reflecting on a scientific basis, and must be able to select and critically evaluate the sources, literature, theory and methods used in the thesis. Through the thesis, the student must demonstrate the ability to communicate an academic study to peers and demonstrate the competency to initiate, manage and complete a long-term process of academic study and writing.

• Competency to draw up models for and organise partnerships in connection with innovation in and between companies.

• Competency to evaluate options for managing networks between companies.

• Competency to develop and benefit from external players and resources in innovation processes.

Overall content

The theme seminar will work with knowledge of how innovation is organised and carried out in co-operation between companies and in a social context, and how company networks and interactive innovation processes work. Students must be able to explain how innovation occurs in interaction with other companies, how network-based innovation processes can be organised, and how the surrounding society affects innovation in the company and entrepreneurship. The significance of the institutional framework and the social environment for innovation must be analysed as a background to understanding the value creation of the company.

Teaching and working methods

The theme seminar provides students with theoretical and in-depth knowledge of selected themes and issues that are specifically formulated within the chosen thematic areas. Students acquire skills in reading theoretical texts in specialised areas and in linking theoretical reflections to practical situations, where the theories can help to provide a better description of actual company conditions and processes. At the theme seminar, students acquire competencies in writing brief presentations on the basis of advanced theory, focusing and conducting discussions on the basis of this theory, and translating academic analyses into proposals for the management and organisation of companies. A number of seminar sessions are held of 2-4 hours’ duration. Examples and case descriptions are used to define analyses of innovation and entrepreneurship. The students’ own empirical observations will be included in the seminar. At the beginning of the seminar, theory and examples are read, discussed and presented. Situations and issues are then discussed in relation to papers, drafts of which are prepared by the students during the seminar. At the end of the seminar the students present their draft papers and receive critique from an opponent, with a subsequent discussion in plenary.

Form of examination

The examination consists of 80% active participation in the seminar sessions and a written paper on an issue in the organisation of innovation processes. The written paper must address an issue of corporate governance, and must be 6-8 standard pages in length. A standard page consists of 2,400 characters (incl. spaces), excluding the front page, table of contents, bibliography and any appendices. The paper must be submitted within seven days of the final course session. If the student fails to meet the requirement of active participation at 80% of the seminar sessions, this paper must be of 10-12 standard pages in length. Re-examination will involve an expanded text of 10–12 standard pages which, in addition to addressing an issue of the organisation of innovation processes, must draw upon at least two theoretical texts. The re-examination paper must

Knowledge: • Insight into the complexity that characterises the relationship between

companies and their surroundings today. • Understanding of the new requirements towards the responsibility and

legitimacy of companies.

Skills: • The ability to obtain knowledge about different theoretical views of

responsibility and legitimacy. • Skills in linking theoretical reflections to practical situations where theory

can provide a better description of the company’s specific challenges and strategies.

• Skills in critically analysing and communicating detailed knowledge on issues relating to corporate responsibility and legitimacy.

Competencies: • Competency to independently identify and apply various theories and

which is considered socially acceptable. The need to be perceived as legitimate has always been crucial to a company’s access to resources – investments, markets, motivated employees and general support in the community. But the relationship between a company and society changes over time, and thereby also the premises for a company’s legitimacy.

Teaching and working methods

A number of lectures are held, including presentations on practice.

Form of examination At the conclusion of the course, students submit a paper that addresses a given issue through the application of theory and empirical data from the course syllabus. The paper must not exceed eight pages of 2,400 characters (incl. spaces), excluding the front page, table of contents, bibliography and any appendices. • Skills in performing empirical analyses of various types of issues in company management.

• The ability to develop relevant action alternatives for a company on the basis of an identification and analysis of the company’s issue.

• Skills in communicating theoretical insights and analysis results to several different target groups.

Competencies: • Competency to identify and formulate an analytical framework to solve

practical issues of management in a company or organisation. • Competency to formulate a basis for decisions in the form of relevant

action alternatives for a company. • Competency to identify possibilities for and obstacles to the

implementation of action alternatives for a company, and to communicate these to decision-makers in and around the company.

Overall content The theme seminar provides students with theoretical and in-depth knowledge

of selected themes and issues that are specifically formulated within the chosen thematic areas. The course introduces the students to a practical case study of a company with which the student must work independently in order to define the company’s issue, identify the need for empirical data about the company, and establish a theoretical framework that can form the basis for a study of the company. On the basis of the collected data and the theoretical understanding of the company, the student prepares a company analysis, formulates action alternatives/problem solutions for the company, develops proposals for the implementation of problem solutions, and communicates these to the company for the purposes of feedback.

Teaching and working methods

A Leadership Lab is a practically-oriented project and seminar course in which students, in co-operation with a company, develop their knowledge, skills and competencies in a realistic setting, on the basis of practices within the company. In concrete terms, a Leadership Lab is implemented as a series of seminars of 2-4 hours each, divided into a number of phases: 1) Presentation of the company’s issue 2) The students’ reflective observation (“data collection”), 3) Development of an abstract perspective (“framework of understanding”) and 4) Presentation of the issue solution for the company, and feedback from the company. On the basis of a specific company, students identify the issue, collect data, select appropriate theory, analyse the company’s issue, and formulate proposals to solve the problem on the basis of their own business analysis and implementation strategy for the company.

Page 31: Curriculum for the Master’s study programme MSc in ... · PDF fileVia the programme, students thus ... • Representing the interests of labour market and industrial ... ordinary

31

At the beginning of the seminar data is collected on the company, and theory and examples are read, discussed and presented. The analysis results are then discussed and proposals for problem solutions are summarised in a paper, draft versions of which are produced by the students during the seminar. At the end of the seminar the students present the papers to their fellow students and receive critique from an opponent, with a subsequent discussion in plenary, before the finished paper is presented as a business report to the company, which then provides feedback on the analysis results and solution proposals. As part of the course, students must:

• Carry out a presentation of a theoretical framework of understanding • Present a draft paper on the basis of one’s own data, analyses and

proposed solutions • Act as opponent to draft papers produced by one or more of one’s

fellow students • Present the company’s business report and receive feedback.

Conditions for being allowed to take the examination

Student must participate actively in 80% of the seminar sessions – see the description of the teaching and working methods.

Form of examination The theme seminar concludes with a written paper on an issue of corporate governance. The written paper must address an issue of corporate governance, and must be 6-8 standard pages in length. A standard page consists of 2,400 characters (incl. spaces), excluding the front page, table of contents, bibliography and any appendices. The paper must be submitted within seven days of the final course session. If the student fails to meet the requirement of active participation at 80% of the seminar sessions, this essay must be 10-12 standard pages in length. Overall content

The aim of the project work is to enable the student to: • Focus on one or more of areas of the Master’s module. • Combine theoretical and practical studies of companies. • Take account of the internal and external frameworks for a company’s

actions. • Demonstrate convincing academic progression in relation to the

knowledge acquired in the previous semesters of the Master’s programme.

• Orient oneself towards a critical perspective on a company’s development, organisation and management.

• Demonstrate clear, problem-oriented considerations and show confident methodological understanding.

Teaching and working methods

The project work is performed in groups of 2-8 students. During the project work, students receive guidance from supervisors to an extent specified by the Study Board.

Form of examination The project work is assessed by an oral examination. The oral examination is a group examination. The examination takes the form of a conversation between the students, the examiner and the co-examiner. Students are examined on the basis of the entire project report, in such a way as to allow for individual assessment. As the basis for the examination, each group gives a presentation of 3-5 minutes’ duration on a specific theme relating to the project work. The size of the project report depends on the group size, and may comprise a maximum of:

• 2-4 students: 75 pages • 5 students: 100 pages • 6-8 students: 120 pages

A standard page consists of 2,400 characters (incl. spaces), excluding the front page, table of contents, bibliography and any appendices. If an exemption is granted, the maximum size of a semester project is 50 pages. If the project report exceeds the above specification of the number of pages it will be refused assessment, which means that the student(s) cannot participate in the examination, and one examination attempt will have been deemed to have been used up. The duration of the examination, including assessment time, is as follows:

• Two examinees: 60 minutes • Three examinees: 75 minutes • Four examinees: 90 minutes • Five examinees: 105 minutes • Six examinees: 120 minutes • Seven examinees: 135 minutes • Eight examinees: 150 minutes

If a student has been granted an exemption to write a project alone, the examination duration is 30 minutes. The oral examination is based on the students’ project report. Students must be examined on the basis of the entire project report, in such a way as to allow for

individual assessment. The grade is awarded on the basis of a combined assessment of both the project report and the oral examination. A single, combined grade is awarded. Re-examination takes the same form as the ordinary examination. Students have an opportunity to revise their projects, which form the basis for the oral examination.

Teaching and working methods

The internship encompasses: • A maximum of 400 hours, included both the internship and the

internship project report. • The writing of an internship project report, the object of which is for the

students to demonstrate the ability to reflect on their period with the company and the skills they have applied there. It must be possible to use the report to discuss the experience students have acquired through the internship – in contrast to their abstract and analytical work with similar issues during their studies. The project report must refer to the overall academic topic of the semester.

The internship must be approved by the Study Board. Prior to commencing the internship, the student must seek advance approval for the host company. In its processing of the application, the Study Board must ensure that the student, through the project-oriented internship, achieves academic competencies which in scope and level correspond to the competencies that can be achieved through the ordinary study programme. If the application is approved, the Head of Studies will assign a supervisor. Guidance is provided to students during the actual internship.

Form of examination The internship is assessed through an oral examination on the basis of the internship project and the internship project report. The examination duration is 30 minutes. The internship project report must be of a maximum size of 50 standard pages of 2,400 characters (incl. spaces), excluding the front page, table of contents, bibliography and any appendices. The project work is assessed by an oral examination. The examination is based on the students’ internship project report. The examination takes the form of a conversation between the students, the examiner and the co-examiner. Students must be examined on the basis of the entire project report, in such a way as to allow for individual assessment. The grade is awarded on the basis of a combined assessment of both the project report and the oral examination. A single overall grade is awarded. Re-examination: Re-examination takes the same form as the ordinary examination. Students are given an opportunity to revise the project.

Group examination or individual examination

Internship projects are normally examined individually. The same rules apply as for an ordinary semester project.

5.4 Fourth semester – thesis Object The thesis corresponds to 30 ECTS credits. The thesis is written in the teaching and examination language of the subject. The Head of Studies approves the thesis statement, and will at the same time set a final date for the submission for the thesis, pursuant to the University’s ‘Registration and Examination Regulations’. The thesis must be accompanied by a summary in a foreign language. If the thesis is written in a foreign language other than Norwegian or Swedish, the summary may be written in Danish. The thesis work is normally carried out in groups, but students are also entitled to perform the thesis work individually. The writing of the thesis normally concludes the study programme, but the Study Board may grant exemptions from this. The student must enclose a study portfolio, which encompasses a description of the student’s development and insight, on the basis of how project work has been carried out in all or parts of the study programme.

Knowledge

• Research-based knowledge in selected academic areas, and an understanding of and reflection on the position of the student’s own thesis study in the academic field.

• Identification of scientific issues and a critical approach to scientific knowledge. • Knowledge of the academic genre and the academic target group, and an understanding of the

overall communication situation of which the thesis is a part.

Skills

• Skills in applying and mastering scientific theories and methods in work on a defined, academic and relevant issue.

• Skills in analysing, categorising, discussing, arguing, reflecting and evaluating on a scientific basis. • Skills in critically evaluating and selecting sources, literature, theory and methods. • Skills in discussing and participating in academic debate with representatives of the academic

discourse community. • Skills in writing in accordance with the applicable standards for academic texts, and for an academic

target group.

Competencies

• Competency to independently initiate, manage and complete a long-term process of academic study and writing.

• Competency to take responsibility for one’s own academic and linguistic development and specialisation.

For theses, the form of assessment is:

• Assessment on the basis of the thesis dissertation alone – but see below on non-individualised group theses.

OR

• Combined assessment of the thesis dissertation and an oral examination.

The Study Board may, however, choose to stipulate one of these forms of assessment; see 5.4.

38

The Study Board has decided that theses in Economics and Business Administration shall be assessed on the basis of the thesis dissertation and an oral examination, in combination.

Students who wish to have their thesis assessed solely on the basis of the thesis dissertation must apply to the Study Board for an exemption.

If the thesis is written by a group, it must be individualised on submission if one or more of the students in the group so wishes and has the possibility to have the thesis assessed on the basis of the thesis alone. The individualisation must be genuine and show which students have been mainly responsible for the individual sections. The introduction, conclusion and summary, in English and other languages, must be encompassed by joint responsibility. If the thesis is not individualised, an oral thesis examination is held instead, at which assessment is undertaken on the basis of both the thesis and the oral examination. Students who have worked together on a thesis to the extent that it cannot in practice be individualised must register for an oral thesis examination.

In addition to the academic content, the assessment of the thesis will also take into account the writing and spelling skills of the student(s), which are weighted at 10%. The Study Board may grant exemptions from this requirement in the case of students who can document a specific and relevant disability, unless the assessment of writing and spelling skills is a significant part of the purpose of the examination.

The summary will be incorporated into the assessment at a weight of 5%.

The thesis is assessed according to the seven-point scale, with external moderation.

The size of the thesis must be:

• One person: 144,000-192,000 characters including spaces, corresponding to 60-80 standard pages

• Two or more participants: 192,000-240,000 characters including spaces, corresponding to 80-100 standard pages

The size of the thesis is based on 2,400 characters (incl. spaces) per page, excluding the front page, table of contents, bibliography and any appendices. The thesis will be refused examination if it exceeds the maximum size, and one examination attempt will be deemed to have been used up. The duration of the examination, including assessment, is determined as follows:

• One examinee: 30 minutes • Two examinees: 60 minutes • Three examinees: 75 minutes • Four examinees: 90 minutes • Five examinees: 105 minutes • Six examinees: 120 minutes

If there are four or more examinees a break may be included in the examination, the duration of which will be added to the length of the examination. 6. General regulations The general provisions on examinations, tests and other forms of assessment, including regulations for submitting appeals relating to examinations and other assessments, etc., may be read at the University's website under section 3.5 of the rules and regulations.
