English (Mr Gwyn Warlow and Ms Ahreum Han)

This term Year 6 will continue exploring different genres in preparation for secondary school. The genres covered will be poetry, instructions, explanation writing and narratives linked to our text, Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver. We will also be writing newspaper reports. The skills we will focus on are the structure of poems, rhythm and rhyme and using different tenses. We will continue to develop a range of vocabulary and using interesting sentence and story openers, atmosphere, feelings of characters and different settings. We will use genre specific skills, such as ‘how and why steps’ when writing instructions and subheadings and time conjunctions for newspaper report writing, for example. Using complex sentences is our continual focus, along with evaluating the effectiveness of different writing and organising writing in different ways.

Mathematics (Mr Gwyn Warlow)

In our final term, we will be completing more advanced work regarding 2D and 3D shape as well as

developing skills involving the use of a protractor and a compass. We will be using these basic skills

to create design work involving degrees of a circle. We will be investigating more advanced work,

using our knowledge of translation and rotation of shapes, as well as developing different

strategies for classifying shapes.

In the latter part of the term, we will be making much more use of group work for our learning

opportunities. We hope to cover work in a more investigative way, allowing the students to take

more responsibility for their own strategies of learning, as well as helping to develop cooperation

skills.

Science (Mrs. Nellie Wong)

This term, the students will learn about the human reproduction system and cover topics such as human life stages, puberty, menstrual cycle and pregnancy. We will also carry out experiments on previously taught topics and students will be shown demonstrations. We hope to cover some secondary syllabus as an introduction. The topics that we will be covering are ‘acids and alkalis’ as well as ‘simple chemical reactions’.

Bahasa Malaysia (Mr. Qairul Afendi and Ms Sathiawathi Sinnathamby)

This term students will be learning about the world around us. The sub-topic for the first half term is about Hometown Shopping and Public Services. In this subtopic, students will be learning about their hometown and identify the best tourists’ attractions in their hometown. During the second half of the term, they will be learning about Natural Environment, Weather and Meeting People. In addition, students will be sharpening their listening, speaking, reading, writing and also presentation skills.

Humanities (Mr Gwyn Warlow)

We will begin this final term by completing work relating to volcanoes and earthquakes, as well as

investigating some extremes of weather which affect different regions of the Earth. The final

history unit for Year 6 explores life in the 1960s and allows students to learn about the emerging

cultural and political trends around the world. Students will learn about popular culture, compare

fashion, discover music and create pop art, as well as considering the long term impact this decade

has had around the world. The second half of the term will include a geographical study of North

and South America. Students will develop map and atlas skills to locate the countries and states,

describe and compare the physical landscape and also identify political and economic issues.

Personal, Social and Health Education (Mr Gwyn Warlow)

In this final term, the students will learn a little about ‘my country’, by helping those who are in need in

their country, appreciate the sacrifices made by the heroes of the country and identify some key attributes

that make a good citizen. Students will also learn to develop their environmental awareness and

responsibility, being cooperative and working together for the good of their country and practice tolerance

of the differences within their country. In the second half-term, the students will learn about

transition and managing changes by understanding about the nature of change, expressing their

expectations and feelings regarding the transition to secondary school and will review personal

experiences as a basis for setting new targets. Students will also learn to understand that there are

different types of relationships and patterns of friendships and know ways of coping with difficult

emotions, fears and worries linked to change.

Mandarin as 1st Language (Ms. Soon Saw Imm)

This term, students will improve their writing skill through expanding sentences and outline practices. They will have oral lessons to improve their listening, and small tests will be conducted every few lessons to track their progress. They will also improve their handwriting by the copying samples. They are encouraged to read the textbook content at home to ensure they can achieve a good result in their speaking test. At the end of the term, students will be able to write compositions of around 120 Chinese characters and using at least five Chinese idiom.

Mandarin as a 2nd Language (Mrs. Pang Sook Yee)

Students will be learning the language for purposes of practical communication in daily life. This term, the students will focus on topics of ‘food and drinks’, ‘fruits’ and ‘vegetables”. They will identify the key words in each chapter through character writing, listening to the Chinese Made Easy CD, oral speaking, reading, Chinese calligraphy, and flash cards. The chapters shall introduce students to the concept of sentence structure and paragraph writing. They will also continue to learn about the Chinese culture through educational short clips related to China. Through the exposure to a variety of texts, they will be able to develop their reading and spelling skills, extend their vocabulary and improve their pronunciation. They will be assessed through oral speaking, listening tasks and sentences forming skills.

Performing Arts (Ms Carrena Tung and Ms Emily Spedding)

The Performing Arts subject consists of two components: Music and Speech and Drama. In Music students will take part in a range of activities to develop children’s ability to explore different musical elements for school production. Through that students will also learn to develop rhythmic patterns. In Speech and Drama, students will be learning different performance techniques. The main focus for this part of the year will be the school production. Year 6 students will be adopting the character role as a basketball player in High School Musical and learning a movement to perform.

EAL (Ms. Nurin Najmina)

This term, we will be focusing on the topic ‘I have to do my homework’. The students are going to

differentiate between ‘have to’ and ‘has to’, complete a quiz about classroom objects and school

subjects, identify different object pronouns, skim and scan for relevant details, transfer

information from linear and non-linear texts and answer reading comprehension questions.

Through role-plays, games and presentations, students will brush up their listening, speaking,

reading and writing skills. Weekly spelling test will also be carried out so that the students can

practise new vocabularies and use them in writing sentences and also speaking.

Art and Design (Mr Mohd Shahrul Hasfis)

This term students will learn about fabric manipulation craft. For the first half term they will

concentrate their learning about simple design drawing and painting. They will learn the

importance of building drawing and will focus on drawing and painting skills including sketches,

idea development and drawing strokes. For the second of half the term, students will concentrate

on fabric manipulation making process. They will be introduced to woven , sewing, felting and may

Sejarah (Ms. Sathiawathi Sinna Thamby)

The students will begin the Summer term with the topic of Development of Malaysia (Then –Now).

The first half of the term, the subtopic will be on Languages in Malaysia where they will learn

about the different types of languages spoken in Malaysia. For the second half of the term, we will

be exploring Malaysian culture (Malay, Chinese and Indian culture). Under the topic of culture,

students will analyse the customs and etiquettes of each culture. As a final evaluation, students

will be asked to do a group presentation based on the topic ‘Our Culture’.

ICT (Mrs. Haniza Hussin)

This term, students will learn about computer networks, their classification in form of size, configuration and connectivity. In E-Safety, students will learn what cyberbullying is, similarities and differences between in-person bullying and cyberbullying. And identify strategies for dealing responsibly with cyberbullying. They will also learn evaluating online media messages about different topics. Students will be introduced to the concept of Cloud collaboration.

Physical Education (Ms Jack Beattie, Mr Dennis Lee, Ms Emily Tan & Mr Vinod Khanna)

At the beginning of term, students will begin with the topic of athletics where they will be required to develop their skills of running, throwing and jumping. The students will learn the refine the correct techniques for high jump, long jump and shot putt. After sports day, students will begin to learn a variety of sports in our Striking and Fielding unit. This will see the students develop their skills in cricket and teeball as well as be introduced to new sports such as rounders. During the second half of this term, students will be developing skills in Gymnastics and Jump Rope. Students will explore a range of Gymnastics components important for developing muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, balance and coordination basic. Static positions, locomotion, spring and balance will be taught and experienced through innovative games and station activities for Gymnastics.
