If you plan to volunteer at any time during the school year, you will need to complete the Online Volunteer Process prior to volunteering. Please use the following link to complete the online volunteer process.

If you are just visiting the school (attending a parent/staff meeting, eating lunch with your child, signing your child in/out), you will still need to present your ID to the front desk and obtain a visitor badge.

Reading-Students’ reading grades need to reflect their ability to comprehend grade level texts.

-Cold reads are an important tool to assess students’ comprehension.

-Cold reads will be used as test and quiz grades.

-Not all tests and quizzes will be cold reads.

-Skills based quizzes and tests will also account for a portion of the students’ grades within these categories.

Reading-Reading fluency-Vocabulary building with Root Words and Affixes-Focus on context clues and comprehension-Expand vocabulary both in verbal and written expression-Read at Lexile level that is challenging-4-5th grade Lexile 770-980-Foster a love of reading!!

Georgia Standards of Excellence

• Three times a year, LWE students are assessed using the BAS

• The BAS is a one-on-one assessment during which students read aloud from a text and respond to corresponding comprehension questions.

• The BAS determines a student’s instructional reading level

• Two components are used to determine a student’s instructional reading level: accuracy and comprehension

• This information helps the teachers to select books to read with students during reading groups

Fountas and Pinnell Balanced Assessment System (BAS)

On-grade level goal

What is Writer’s Workshop?-Writer’s workshop is an environment where students can acquire the skills and confidence to see themselves as writers.

-Student’s are put in charge and are actively involved in creating their own texts.

-The writing workshop puts students on the spot and makes them responsible for their writing.

What does it look like?-I deliver instruction on a specific writing technique during brief mini-lessons.

-Students then practice the technique during independent writing time.

-We write often and student’s determine the subject they write about within the genres.

Lucy Calkins-Systematic and prescriptive approach to writing

-Breaks down writing into sections of a story and allows students to expand on those sections before even writing a rough draft

-Enables students to add more vivid details for their reader in small steps and then takes those ideas and compile them into a story

-First genre is narrative- small moment and expand on that with great details

(Narrative, Opinion, Persuasive & Informational)

SeeSaw- Seesaw empowers students of any age to independently

document what they are learning at school.

- Students capture learning with photos and videos of their work, or by adding digital creations.

- Everything gets organized in one place and is accessible to teachers from any device.

- Student work can be shared with classmates, parents, or published to a class blog.

- Seesaw gives students a real audience for their work and offers parents a personalized window into their child's learning.

Have a wonderful evening!

Thank you for coming!
