Portuguese Design History. Digital Arts, seeking to explore the potential of digital technologies and interactivity as arguments for artisticcreation.

In 2011 was invited to integrate an A3ES panel for the assessment and accreditation of Portuguese degrees inthe field of Design.Since 2002 member of the Executive Committee of the European Academy of Design and member of doEditorial Advisory Board of "The Design Journal".Since 2008 is founding member and Director of ID+, Research Institute for Design, Media and Culture. Since 2007 invited member of Centre of Studies, Theory, Research and Design Culture (T&C Design) from theUniversity of Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil.Since 2006, member of the Evaluation panel for Ph.D. grants in the area of Architecture, Urbanism and Design.Since 2006 is Director of the Portuguese Design Observatory of the Portuguese Design Center. Since 2010 participation in the project "Paredes Creative City for the Design - Design Hub" namely in thedevelopment of "Art on Chairs: an idea for the world on a chair" which includes several activities to developthe use of Design by enterprises at Paredes region and give visibility to this effort.

Since 2009 is involved in the Interpretation Centre for Portuguese Design (ICPD), a project whose role will beto investigate (gather, connect, classify, communicate and display) the extent of the heritage of communicationartefacts, equipment and environment, presently dispersed about the country and at risk of disappearing intooblivion.

The Designing Out Stigma research project (2008) focuses on the understanding of stigma associated toproducts and the repercussions of their use for the construction of the self-image. The project develops anevaluation model through which we can classify any given product as stigmatising, as well as providingdeveloping hypotheses for non-stigmatising objects.

Since 2008 is founding member and Director of ID+, Research Institute for Design, Media and Culture. ThisResearch Unit was evaluated in 2009 by a FCT international panel with "Very Good".

Between 2004 and 2008 was responsible for the University of Aveiro research team in the European projectINSCAPE - Interactive Storytelling for Creative People (IP EU RTD contract IST-2004-004150).INSCAPE aims at enabling ordinary people to use and master the latest Information society technologies forinteractively conceiving, authoring, publishing and experiencing interactive stories whatever their form, be ittheatre, movie, cartoon, puppet show, video-games, interactive manuals, training simulators, etc. This projectaggregates partners of various Universities and European Research Centers.

Between 2004 and 2007 was the Coordinator of the Communication and Art Investigation Unit (UNICA) atAveiro University.

In 2001 was invited by Professor Nunes Ferreira from FEUP to integrate this faculty’s team in the ProjectSmartSketches. This project, oriented for the computational object modeling of in an intuitive manner, wasbased in a multimodal approach and calligraphic interfaces. Starting from the sketch as a basis for 3D modelingthe project intended to explore its convergence with other virtual environments, namely augmented reality. Itwas a European project with partners like: INESC-ID, FEUP, Italdesign-Giugiaro, CENTIMFE, FhG/IGD,University of Bath, amongst others.

In 1990 was a researcher of IDES: Intuitive Design System, financed by Programa Mobilizador de Ciência eTecnologia of JNICT (Junta Nacional de Investigação Científica e Tecnológica) [PCMT/C/TIT/444/90]. Thisproject, converged with the research for my Ph.D., which intended to make a prototype of a system thatwould make more intuitive for a Designer the use of 3D CAD systems.

In 1989 integrated ShoeCAD project: CAD Technologies for the Footwear Industry, financed by the SFS-Natoprogram ("Science For Stability"). This project, whose aim was centered in the realization of a Footwear CADsystem, had the participation of INESC and industry partners like the Technological and Formation Centre forFootwear, LNETI and two "software-houses".
