Academic Experience
Spring 2009 Associate Professor, New Mexico State University, College of Health and
to present Social Services, Department of Public Health Sciences
Teaching excellence includes college teaching award, consistently higher
student evaluation scores than department student evaluation scores, and
scholarly work for cultural competency and experiential learning.
Innovative research includes 16 publications in peer-reviewed journals
(first author – 12), 49 presentations, and grant funding. University service
includes leadership skills for department changes using continuous quality
improvement process for curriculum revisions, comprehensive exams,
syllabi, faculty development, and policies and procedures. University
service also includes serving as faculty senator and faculty advisor for the
student organization, Voice Against Cancer. Professional service includes
connection to research as member of New Mexico Cancer Council and
leader on the national level as Cancer Patient Education Network (CPEN)
Treasurer and Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) Community
of Practice co-leader.
2006 - 2008 Adjunct Faculty, Old Dominion University, College of Health Sciences,
School of Community and Environmental Health (MPH Program with
Eastern Virginia Medical School), taught MPH public health core courses
and MPH Community Health Education track courses, taught

2008-2009 Manager, Community Health & Prevention, Sentara Healthcare, Norfolk,

Led statewide and regional community health promotion programs.
Provided staff development as resource person. Collaborated with local
coalitions to improve health of the region. Received community health
worker program 2008 recognition award as one of the national best
practices of Planetree hospitals.
2002-2007 Instructional Designer, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Richmond,

Developed, taught, and evaluated 320-hour competency-based courses.
Engaged in extensive curriculum design and evaluation. Served as project
team member for annual medical, state, and federal policy changes and
continuous quality improvement changes. Served as community grant
review committee member for foundation grants. Led worksite wellness as

a resource person to promote worksite health including Breast Cancer
Awareness for three consecutive years reaching over 1,000 employees.
1997-2001 Senior Provider Education Consultant, TriAtlantic Healthcare, Portsmouth,
VA
Managed, developed, and led new provider education program with strong
facilitation and situational leadership skills. Analyzed and assessed
educational needs of approximately 800 military physicians in nine Military
Treatment Facilities in North Carolina and Virginia. Developed modules
and trained provider educators to conduct over 60 workshops annually for
over 500 physicians.
1991-1997 Educator, Education & Research Services, Sentara Norfolk General
Hospital, Norfolk, VA
Developed 120-hour courses and conducted various training modules for
over 6,000 employees in four hospitals. Developed written modules for
required cultural diversity annual training. Developed low literacy
materials and workshops for teaching patients with low literacy. Served
on the Patient Education Committee as health literacy expert.
