Optimize an existing data warehouse for a multinational tobacco company

Period 2014 – Present

Short description of the project: This was a very particular project. On the one hand the most challenging because of the delay and the fact that we started already with an existing data warehouse. And on the other hand because we needed to be in line with the infrastructure people who work in Switzerland and the support team that operates in India. The goal of this project is to make the existing reporting much faster by re-structuring tables, examine and modify the index policies, change non performant (and very complex) stored procedures, make a roadmap for future cubes to optimize even more. We divided this project into several modules (phases):

My responsibility in this project is to analyze the performance issues, propose a road map to solve all the issues and define the modified data warehouse, develop the necessary changes and do the entire follow up.

Migration from dBase to Microsoft® SQL Server® environment and data warehouse set up for an organization in the public sector


Short description of the project The reason for this migration: the previous HR dBase environment would be decommissioned. The customer already had a Microsoft® SQL Server environment for other applications and other departments so it was more than logic to migrate all to Microsoft® SQL Server. At the same time, different applications were used at HR and other departments (payroll, planning, time, evaluation, …).

During this migration the target was to:

Consolidate as much as possible the different data into one centralized system

Avoid re-entering data (before the migration this was done almost every day)

Keep the old control reports but on the new environment (control data from manual

entries versus auto updates in payroll application)

Make the same information available for different departments without going via exports

Bring the reports to a higher dimension and make them more user friendly

Create dimension tables (snowflake model) that allow to group data on different levels

and from different points of view

Besides the migration some of the manual data that were entered in the database application needed to keep on living. So we wrote a tailor made .NET application to keep on maintaining this manual information.

We also created an eID reader application because all employees need to provide once a year their updated identity card status. This data is of course inserted and merged with the previous mentioned Microsoft® SQL Server data.

My responsibility in this project is to do the entire migration, keep an open communication with IT and the different departments to make further developments easier. Analyze together with the IT department the data warehouse delivered by the external partner of third party software and adapt it to the specific needs of the customer.



Centralized database and complex reporting for worldwide chemical company


Short description of the project

Based on several profound analysis, I developed a set of complex ETL (extract, transform, load) processes. Data is retrieved from multiple PLC systems all over the world into one centralized Microsoft® SQL Server database and transformed to be aligned to the in house ERP database. Lots of data are reworked, summarized, re-grouped, … to meet the requirements and needs of the managers, the engineers, the sales people and the chemical experts who analyze thoroughly all the details on temperatures, grams, mixtures, delays, … It’s yet an ongoing project because of the complexity of the dashboards, alert reports, evolution charts and drill-through lists. This is a perfect example of how people learn from the information they collect and adapt reports where needed. During the first quarter of 2015 the top to bottom report will be finished.

Data analysis training for two major training companies in Belgium


Short description of the project Because of my extended BI experience, these 2 collaborating companies wanted to work with me to organize a special training for their customers. It needed to be a two day training of which the first day was a more theoretical based approach towards data quality, data maintenance, data models, data analysis, KPI’s, … The second day was a practical training on PowerPivot in Microsoft® Excel. The big challenge in this training was to make data analysis tangible for all participants (assistants, managers, developers, …). First things first. It started with 2 meetings together with the trainers of the training company to define the audience and the content. Next I created a practical content, slides for the training and a training manual. Next step was a pilot training followed by quarterly French and Dutch trainings.

Data warehouse and reporting for a customer in the automotive sector (worldwide)

Period 2011 – 2013

Short description of the project Based on several profound analysis, our team developed a set of ETL (extract, transform, load) processes. Data is retrieved from third party applications and files like MS Excel, TXT, CSV, Oracle®, Microsoft® SQL Server, Microsoft® Access, XML, Microsoft® SharePoint, …. The information is than transformed to meet the requirements and needs of the business units and inserted into centralized data marts and data warehouses.

The next logical step was to set up a server-based reporting platform to create and deploy the reports for our customer. We developed some tools to maintain, extend and customize their reporting. It was a long, complex, fun and very challenging project since the dashboards, reports, lists, … that we needed to create for the management, production department, HR, finance department, … each time needed a lot of thinking to combine the correct information from the different sources, departments and plants. And to be honest, the customer pushes us each time a bit further, and that’s just what we like to do!
