c) In Charge of Staff Seminars, Colloquia and Conferences

I was in charge of staff seminars for the academic year 2012/13 and 2013/2014. I have now

been assigned the same duty for the academic year 2015/16. During my term, the Literature

Department was very actively involved in staff seminars which were attended also by the MA

and PhD students.

I organized an average of 2-3 seminar presentations per month with presentations from the

Department of Literature as well as other Kenyan and international scholars..I chaired the

sessions and was also the discussant. (See attached Report on the Departmental Seminar

Presentations). Although I was not in charge of seminars this academic year (2014/2015), I

facilitated 3 events:

5 August 2015 Celebrating Poetry This was held at Kikuyu campus in collaboration

with Kisii University where poets and academicians from countries such as the USA,

Ghana, Nigeria, Italy, Norway, Barbados, India, the Virgin Islands, Kenya and South

Africa presented papers and recited their poetry. I provided the links for the event and

helped in its organization, especially in liaising with Kikuyu campus

of Europe was introduced in the Revised MA curriculum, which I have just completed

teaching for the first time.

Since 2012 have attended regularly Committee meetings on Procurement and Finance

where we have stipulated bids for the purchase of furniture and various items for the

department as well as for printing and have screened offers responding to the bids.

We have also considered a few disciplinary cases involving students from the

Literature department.

f) International Linkages Programs

1-14 April 2015 visit to Japan

Soka University (together with other senior staff) held discussions and negotiations about the

continuation of the student and staff exchange program

Rakeisha Film Company, Toho Studios and Nippon TV to discuss the modalities about

the launching in Nairobi of the film Lion Standing against the Wind

OLX Animated Films Company to discuss training of a member of Lit Department (academic staff or a student) in the production of animated films as there is no such training available in Kenya. Fukushima University: Discussions with the Dean of the Faculty of Educationto draft a Memorandum of Understanding between Fukushima University and Lit Department for an exchange program to enhance the capacity building of our academic staff in film production.

movement, to Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) for permission to use a Kenyan song in the film, and so on

August 2014 Edited the English translation of the script (Lion Standing Against the Wind)

July 2014 Developed a draft Memorandum of understanding between the Department of

Literature and Rakeisha Film Co. for a collaboration in the production of the film The Lion

Standing Against the Wind.

collaboration between the company and the Department and areas of collaboration.

March – April 2013 Interviewed UoN students for a cultural exchange visit to Osaka, Japan

and inducted them into traditions and customs of Japan.
