Institutional Procedures for Course Evaluations

Similar processes are used to evaluate courses at NDSU and Purdue University. Both institutions ask students two core questions that rate the course and the instructor. The only key difference is that the five point scales differ. At NDSU, the scale sets 1 as Very Good and 5 as Very Poor, while the Purdue scale sets 5 as Excellent and 1 as Poor. At both universities, the evaluations were administered by a staff person or the department chair and Dooley was never present during the evaluation. The benchmark

for NDSU ratings are other courses from the Agricultural Economics Department. At Purdue, Dooley’s results are compared to results for all courses taught in the College of Agriculture. University level data are not available at either Purdue University or NDSU.

Dooley’s Course Evaluations

Dooley’s instructor evaluations are far better than institutional benchmarks for all 15 courses that he has routinely taught. At NDSU, his overall average course and instructor ratings were 1.77 and 1.52, respectively. This easily bests the average NDSU course rating of 2.35 and the instructor rating of 2.45.

At Purdue, his overall average course and instructor ratings were 4.30 and 4.60, outperforming the College averages of 4.10 and 4.22, respectively. In the last five years, his course and instructor evaluations rose to 4.50 and 4.82, respectively.
