Clinical Duties

Trained as a neurologist and psychiatrist/psychotherapist, I have broad expertise in diagnostics and various treatment approaches in psychiatry and its borderlands with somatic medicine. As a true academic, it has always been my passion to apply research insights to the demanding puzzle of diagnosing and treating patients and therefore, I dedicate about 70% of my working time to clinical care and training of junior colleagues. I have operationalized my mission to integrate research and clinical care when setting up new outpatient clinics for neuropsychiatric disorders as well as old-age psychiatry with innovative diagnostics and treatment options. Also, I integrated my research and my broad clinical expertise when establishing a new supra-regional neurostimulation unit focusing on electroconvulsive and transcranial magnetic therapy for the treatment of patients with drug-resistant depression. For in-patients, I focus in line with my somatic expertise on consultation and liaison psychiatry throughout the Radboudumc. Here I have recently started to study the interaction between somatic diseases, often severe stressors, and mental conditions with colleagues from medical psychology, intensive care and haemato-oncology. With an innovative, personalized approach, I have developed clinical trials of bed-side treatment with short cognitive behavioral interventions and experimental forms of cognitive modulation. While highly specialized care, as provided at a university medical center, is a wonderful academic challenge, I think it is important to maintain a broad clinical perspective including general care in first-line psychiatry. Therefore, I have extended our consultation services to a local GP practice and I have established a small private psychotherapy practice.
