Zafarana Wind Farm in Egypt, which is among the largest onshore wind farms in the world. It is located 120 kilometres south of Suez on the Red Sea. The wind farm is erected in one of the windiest sites in this part of the world, where the average wind speed rises above 9 m/second. Due to the extreme weather conditions, the wind turbines have been specially prepared to cope with Egypt’s hot desert climate, sand storms and salty air.

Extended eight times The Zafarana project consists of several phases of which Danida has been supporting the first, second and seventh phase.

The fist wind farm was constructed in 2000 with 50 stall‐regulated wind turbines rated 600kW each. The second wind farm was constructed in 2001 with 46 pitch‐regulated wind turbines rated 660 kW each.

In 2008, design of the seventh wind farm started, consisting of 142 wind turbines with a capacity of 120MW.
