Johannesburg. A key task is to encourage the scholarship of teaching and learning at the University. I supervise PhD students and coordinate two research projects: the NRF Funded Structure, Culture and Agency project on professional development, and SOTL@UJ: Towards a Socially Just Pedagogy. I convene the Southern African Universities Learning and Teaching Forum (SAULT) and the Heltasa-CHE Teaching Excellence Awards. I am co-editor of the International Journal for Academic Development (IJAD) and Critical Studies in Teaching and Learning (CRISTAL).

2004 - 2013 I worked at Stellenbosch University as Director of the Centre for Teaching and

Learning. The Centre supported the enhancement of all aspects of teaching and learning at the University. Areas of focus of the Centre include: coordination of the University’s Extended Degree Programmes, support for tutor programmes, the professional development of academics, student feedback, integrating academic literacy in the curriculum, E-learning, development of teaching and learning policies and strategic documents, the First-year Academy and various research projects. I was concurrently Associate Professor in the Department of Didactics. I convened a module in the MPhil in Health Science Education and supervised several PhD and Masters students.

2002 - 2003 I worked at the Department of Education, as Director: Race and Values in Education.

The Directorate, which I set up in January 2002, managed the Values in Education Programme of Action. This was launched in June 2002. 1998 - 2001 I worked at the Department of Education, as Director of the National Centre for

Curriculum Research and Development (NCCRD). Activities during this period

included setting up the Directorate and establishing its research focus; participating in writing "Language in the Classroom; Towards a Framework for Intervention" (2000), which was presented at a national Department of Education Language Colloquium in June 2000, organized by the NCCRD; participating in the Values, Democracy and Education Reference Group in 2000; writing "Capacity for Curriculum Development at Provincial Head Office”. I oversaw research on professional development, district development, curriculum projects database, recognition of prior learning, maths and science, assessment and anti-racism.

1992 - 1997 I worked at the Academic Development Centre, University of the Western Cape.

Tasks included: lecturing in Linguistics 1 and tutoring in Linguistics 2; developing a series of computer supported education modules for English 1 on editing writing; co-teaching an English Honours module; setting up the Writing Centre; co-editing a Handbook on Writing for Lecturers; coordinating the Arts INFOLIT project, which included making two videos; convening an Arts FADC subcommittee on foundation courses; convening an ADC workshop for lecturers in May on multilingualism at the university; co-supervising three masters dissertations and supporting a journal writing project for History 1 part-time students.

1987 - 1991 I taught English and French at Rosebank House College. I was promoted to position

of head of the middle school shortly before leaving to take up the post at the ADC. 1986 I taught English at Livingstone High School. 1985 I was a part-time administrative secretary at the Mowbray Interrace Group (Merge). 1983 - 1984 I taught English at Crestway Senior Secondary School. 1982 I was a teacher/librarian at Lavender Hill Senior Secondary School. 1980 -1981 I taught for one term at Crystal Senior Secondary, then became a full-time writer for
