CURRICULUM VITAE OF DR. SWATI SAMVATSAR Major working areas
Experiences in natural resource management: I started as field botanist in 1986 as Ph.D. fellow and
moved around forest, interacted with forest dwellers (Adivasis) who were enjoying a forest based life
style and that was my primary education or awareness for linkages of natural resources and livelihood
of one of the most deprived community in our country. I learned natural resources using two
approaches, scientific and social. From that period to this date a long period has been passed and my
experiences and learning taught me a lot which is useful me to operate at senior executive level of the
organization. This journey has many seen and unseen folds who make me enable to work in any
condition where thrust area is natural resource management. (total experience > 23years)
Astute understanding of the country situation: Basically I am a researcher with a good quality of
analysis of the situation and able to visualized the future action and trends. I understand the country’s
generic situation in many aspects (excluding of political condition which is not my forte) and specific
situation of tribal pockets specifically of dry lands. I also believe that remedy is located nearby the
ailments if you can pinpoint it and usually I act on this principle also.
As senior person in the organization: Sadguru Foundation is one of the prestigious livelihood and
natural resource management promotion NGOs in India working for the welfare of tribal people and
rural folk in the area and as senior person in the Sadguru Foundation Sadguru Foundation. This
organization working in three states viz., Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. I am interacting with
different stake holders from villager to policy makers, funders, sibling NGO and sometimes
politicians and visitors. Some time I have to take overall responsibility in the absence of directors. Our
organization has 100 staff on pay roll and more than 300 voucher payee staff.
I am assisting my director in fund raising (in preparation of concept note, full length proposal),
presentation before board of directors and strategy planning of organization. In this task, as well
as in the task of the senior person of the organization, the financial projections and administration of
projects has been handled in sole responsibility by me since many years. The existing annual budget of
the organization is around 30 crores (300 million).
This mentioned experiences will help me in dealing with different stake holders, presentation and
conceptualization of any new activities. (Total experience 6years)
Experience in monitoring: I have developed many schedules to assess the impact of interventions at
different levels viz., pre and post and process. These interventions are related to natural resource
management and sustainable livelihood. I have attempted to design format for assessment methodologies inclusive of format for baseline survey for at village level, beneficiary level, impact assessment for various aspects like community lift irrigation scheme, watershed area development, agroforestry, floriculture, agriculture, rural sanitation and energy etc. I have done more than 25 studies (in five years )as part of impact assessment and many success stories in my present job. I am also responsible to undertake external evaluation from agency appointed by funder for work of my working organization. All my experience taught me to design any kind of questionnaire for desired result (Total experience 6 years)
As coordinator: In my present job I am working as leader for monitoring, documentation and action
research unit and my basic responsibilities are,
preparation of proposal seeking financial help
Preparation of reports as review, impact and terminal reports of various NRM based projects funded
by different agencies,
to conduct survey for pre operational status (base line survey) and Post operational status
to conduct rapid impact assessment
to conduct different case studies as impact assessment and process documentation
to develop documents for different agencies (mainly funders) as per requirement
to conduct workshops
to coordinated different team working on different aspects like Watershed, development of water
resources, community managed lift irrigation scheme, community based organizations, horticulture
and plantation etc
Even in my earlier jobs also coordination was the main duties which I did successfully with desired
result and human touch
All the above mentioned work cannot be completed without the support of different teams. In present
organization different departments are responsible for specific work like watershed development,
environment and forestry, lift irrigation (construction), lift irrigation (social aspects), training etc. I
have to interact with each and every department and make them active participants in different
activities. I am taking care of evaluation of our activities by other agencies and in this aspect also I have
to coordinate all the teams to work together and became a single unit. (Total experience 8 years)
As data custodian and analyzer: My research back ground and computer knowledge help me in
arranging the data so that it can be retrieve any time and in analysis of data.
My efficiency in analysis of data is creditable and I can quote one example that, during the assignment
of development of micro plan for all village (696)of Dahod district under Integrated Tribal
Development Program (for doubling the income) all the data regarding existing condition and
proposed plan were arranged in excel sheet and it is easily retrievable. This plan is admired by
commissioner Tribal Development (Gandhi Nagar) and she asked all other district PA to prepare the
micro plan similar to Dahod plan. I have been delivering a lecture to CEOs of Jila Panchayat of
Madhya Pradesh to develop a micro plan and how to develop a data bank. Analysis of the data
collected for micro plan was analysed under different sectors and a plan for eight sector for 693 villages
and the report inclusive of all aspect could be summarized in 10000 (ten thousand) pages.
This skill of arranging data, its analysis and decipher among different stakeholders in the form of power
point presentation can be used in any capacity (Total experience 22 years)
As workshop planner: I can define myself as event manager in the field of rural development/tribal
development and I am able to conduct any program with full and active participation of all
stakeholders of various disciplines.
I am a faculty for different courses running under natural resource management and also coordinator of
the program for students of Cincinnati University Cincinnati USA and other national level programs
where a week plan developed which inclusive of work shop, field level education and open discussion
Documentation and projection of work: In my academic carrier I had number of scientific research
paper published in international journals and two books to my credit and in my social sector carrier I
have more than 25 studies as outcome of research, outcome of impact assessment and report. I was a
active team member of visual documentary of organizations work in writing concept, manuscript and
overall planning. The time frame for each documentary is 23, 12 and 29 minutes. (Total experience 20
and 7years)
As Management Representative for ISO: Sadguru Foundation is attempting for ISO (2008-9001)
certification and I am working as Management representative for this. This role needs a lot of
coordination among all the departments and process documentation for the organization, which I am
handling at present. This role taught me a lot like sequencing of activities for better and accurate result
within time frame and at personal level also it helped me in keeping the things systematically and
acting accordingly. (total experience 2 years)
As micro level planner: A micro level planning for 696 villages for doubling the income in five years were undertaken by me as chief researcher and coordinator. This inclusive of plans under different categories like agriculture, horticulture, milk production, skill development etc., the final report is summarized in 10,000 pages. All the interventions planned under adaptation strategies for climate change and its solution at micro level.
Another planning for development of tribal district Dahod is ongoing. This is a planning at panchayat level and it is for backward region grand fund (BRGF).
One important aspect of planning at micro level is to develop a backwardness index at village level of a tribal district (Dahod) which is far away from main stream of development. This index can be duplicated in any part of dry land
Experience of developing proposal for financial assistance Fund raising is one of the most issues for rural development. Many proposals developed by me has been sanctioned for financial assistance by various agencies
Working experience in tribal medicines : I started my Doctoral work in 1986 in tribal pocket, Jhabua District of Madhya Pradesh, under the title, “The Floristics and Biological Spectrum of Jhabua Dist. (M.P.) with Notes on Ethnobotany”. While my doctoral work was in progress, I came across a different but very valuable field of ethnobotany especially tribal medicine. For my dissertation, floristic work was primary and while collecting wild flowers I was always accompanied by tribal men or some times “barwas” and hence I had a excellent opportunity to learn vernacular names of plants and their uses before scientific names. After my doctoral work I opted ethno botany for my further research. I expanded my area of work from one district to three districts, followed by the core area of Bhil community and Narmada valley. For this, CSIR and DST offered financial assistance. Literally every trip has contributed some new data that has not been collected so far. Still I feel that if scientific documentation of this rapidly vanishing wealth is undertaken covering large areas, it will be a valuable contribution for the coming generations. After having spent a long time in this field I feel that time has come when formulation of some drug is possible, through multidisciplinary approach.
Experience as trainer/ faculty: Regular faculty member for NRM based program, micro planning, watershed approach etc organized in organization and trainees ranges from villager to policy makers and students from various national and international institutes.
Different subjects covered under lectures are as follows:
