PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

During my current job as a Consultant Urologist at Guy’s Hospital, I am

responsible to deliver service as a leader in the field of Genito urethral Reconstructive

Surgery and Andrology

During the Fellowship in Robotic Urology at UCH, I received training and gained

experience in many advanced procedures in uro oncology including robotic radical

prostatectomies, robotic extended PLND, robotic partial or radical Nephrectomies and

Nephroureterectomies, robotic pyeloplasties and robotic cystectomies with intracorcopral

urinary diversion.

In addition to the operative workload, during this time I was involved in the delivery of

service in one out-patient clinic per week (SMDT cancer clinic). I also run the delivery of

the clinical service as a senior fellow in the department and coordinated care on the ward

in conjunction with the junior staff and consultants in the department. Finally, I also

participated as a Senior Registrar in General Urology for the point of view of urological

emergencies where I ran the emergency general urology cover in a 1:5 rota

During the Fellowship in Laparoscopic Urology at Royal Surrey Hospital, I

received training and gained experience in many advanced procedures including

8

laparoscopic radical prostatectomies, Lap extended PLND, Lap Nephrectomies and

Nephroureterectomies and Lap pyeloplasties

In addition to the operative workload, during this time I was involved in the delivery of

service in one out-patient clinic per week(prostate cancer clinic). I also run the delivery

of the clinical service as a senior fellow in the department and coordinated care on the

ward in conjunction with the junior staff and consultants in the department. Finally, I also

participated as a Senior Registrar in General Urology for the point of view of urological

emergencies where I ran the emergency general urology cover in a 1:5 rota

During the Fellowship in Reconstructive Urology and Andrology at UCH, I

received training and gained significant experience in many advanced and intermediate

procedures including: urethroplasties of anterior and posterior urethra using BMG,

urorectal fistula repair with gracilis flap, perineal urethrostomies, implantation of AUS,

reconstructive surgery of the bladder and ureters, implantation of penile prosthesis,

glansectomies, partial and total penectomies using SSG, open PLND, inquinal LND with

satorius flap, Nesbit’s and Lue’s procedure, RAP phalloplasties, reversal vasectomies,

micro TESE, penile reconstruction with FTSG etc . for both benign and malignant

diseases.

In addition to the operative workload, during this time I was involved in the delivery of

service in four out-patients clinics per week(male reconstruction, infertility, erectile

dysfunction and general andrology and postop follow up). I also run the delivery of the

clinical service as a senior fellow in the department and coordinated care on the ward in

conjunction with the junior staff and consultants in the department. Finally, I also

participated as a Senior Registrar in General Urology for the point of view of urological

emergencies where I ran the emergency general urology cover in a 1:14 rota. Moreover, I

was 24 hours on call every day for the following emergencies:

1. Priapism patients

2. Patients who have implanted AUS

3. Patients who have implanted penile prosthesis

During my 23 months training in Urology in Greece, I have received surgical

training at Registrar and Senior Registrar level. I have been responsible for the pre- and

post- operative management of the patients in the ward and have been working on a 1:4

on call rota. I have gained experience in dealing with urological emergencies and acute

and chronic urological conditions and I carried out (with and without supervision) a

number of minor, intermediate and major elective and non-elective operations. My

training included all aspects of General Urology including Andrology, Uro- Oncology,

Female Urology and Endourology. I have also assisted in numerous major laparoscopic

procedures including laparoscopic prostatectomy. I have, also, had the opportunity to

participate in the departmental research activities and presented papers at scientific

meetings.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

As a military medical officer I was responsible for educating nursing and medical staff

and teaching basic medical and first aid skills to the soldiers. In my subsequent posts I

was also responsible for educating junior house officers and nursing staff in the practical

aspects of patient management, such as fluid management, wound care and basic

technique such as catheterization as well as running regular teaching sessions for medical

students during their attachments as well as the run-up to finals. I have also taught on

avoidance of sexually transmitted diseases and narcotic dependency to students. During

my training in Greece, I have also been responsible for educating junior Residents and

nursing staff in the practical aspects of patient management, such as peri-operative

management, wound care and basic urological techniques.

Besides I was running regular teaching sessions for UCL medical students during their

attachments as well as the run-up to finals. In particular, I have taught on the topic

‘critical decisions in urology’ to students in several teaching sessions.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

McS Thesis - In men with early prostate cancer, who are treated with primary

HIFU, to what extent can the following outcomes be understood / defined?

The following Research Question was addressed:

In men with early prostate cancer who are treated with HIFU, to what extent can the

following outcomes be understood / defined?

1. What is the PSA nadir at three months post treatment that is associated with long

term freedom from biochemical progression?

2. What is the extent of within patient variability of PSA following HIFU treatment?

3. What is the level of association between post treatment PSA at three months and

post treatment prostate volume?

4. What are the determinants of PSA failure after HIFU treatment?

The following questions have been addressed in a structured, collaborative research

program in which the baseline characteristics, disease severity, conduct of therapy and

biochemical, histological and psycho-social outcomes have been determined in a well

characterized cohort of men.

Part of this work has already been presented in International Scientific Meetings and also

been submitted in International Medical Journals

PhD Thesis - Ischaemic Priapism – pathophysiology and histopathology of the

disease, predictive value of the current diagnostic methods and surgical treatments

Aim of the study I

10

For the first phase of the study we will compare the histopathological results of the

corporal biopsies in patients with ischaemic priapism for more than 24 hours with the

results of the penile Doppler ultrasound scan and MRI scan in order to confine the

predictive value of these imaging studies.

Aim of the study II

In this phase we will compare the early insertion of penile implant with the T shunt and

‘snake’ maneuver technique and their efficacy for the treatment of the ischaemic priapism

according the IIEF-5 questionnaire (pre and post operatively)

Aim of the study II

In this phase we will compare and analyze the histopathology results of the patients with

ischaemic priapism with these of healthy corporal tissue.
