Research summary I am exploring the energy frontier, studying the laws of nature at the highest energies.

My interest is the top quark, its electroweak interactions, and in particular its connection to electroweak symmetry breaking and new physics. For the past eight years I have focused on electroweak production of single top quark events at the Tevatron and the LHC. Both the DØ and the CDF collaboration have announced observation of single top quark production in 2009, which marks an important milestone for the Tevatron and was twenty years in the making. I was leading the DØ single top effort at the time.

The ATLAS collaboration has observed single top quark production in the t-channel in 2011. I was editor of the corresponding conference note and I am currently editor of a paper that is in preparation. I received a NSF CAREER award in 2010 to look for new physics in the single top quark final state and for a planetarium outreach project. I am co-convener of the ATLAS single-top working group from 2011 to 2012. I have also written several phenomenology papers related to single top quark production.

DØ experiment at the Tevatron I have been deeply involved in the DØ single top analysis since the beginning of Run

II at the Tevatron, leading the analysis team as co-convener of the single top quark working group from 2003 to 2005 and 2007 to 2009 as well as having responsibility for many analysis details. I continue to be in charge of the statistical analysis and have an interest in applying multivariate analysis methods to extract the small signal out of large backgrounds. Besides the single top observation, summarized in Figure 1 (Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 092001, 2009), we were also the first to find evidence for single top quark production in Fall 2006 (Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 181902, 2007). Both results were published in PRL and were widely publicized, with articles on the MSU PA homepage and in many magazines and publications, Nature and Scientific American, amongst others. I was also responsible for the combination of the DØ and CDF results on the single top observation measurements for the Tevatron Electroweak Working Group (arXiv:0908.2171, 2009).

I led the effort to isolate the t-channel mode of single top production in the DØ data. I worked with a postdoc to publish the first separate measurement of t-channel single top quark production, independent of assumptions about the s-channel contribution (Phys. Lett. B682, 363-369, 2009). Figure 2 shows the two-dimensional posterior probability density as a function of the s-channel and t-channel cross sections. The measurement is consistent with the SM expectation for both the s-channel and the t-channel, and the t-channel contribution is obtained from this posterior by integrating over the s-channel axis.

Based on this t-channel measurement, we also extracted the first and to this day most precise measurement of the top quark width from the same dataset (Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 022001, 2011).

The single top quark final state is a sensitive probe to many models of new physics and I have initiated or completed several searches for new physics in the single top quark final state. I worked with a postdoc to set stringent limits gluon-mediated flavor-changing neutral current couplings of the top quark (Phys. Lett. B693, 81, 2010). I initiated a search for anomalous couplings in the single top quark final state and completed the combination of the single top measurement with a top quark decay W helicity measurement, resulting in the most stringent limits on top quark anomalous couplings to

date (Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 092002, 2009). I completed the first search for a new heavy boson W' that decays to a top quark – bottom quark pair (Phys. Lett. B 641: 423-431, 2006).

I have expanded my single top effort to low-mass Higgs searches at DØ. I am working with Professor Wade Fisher and several MSU graduate and undergraduate students on DØ Higgs measurements in the dilepton+jets final state. I was co-convener of the low-mass Higgs working group at DØ from 2009 to 2010. I also spent one month in 2008 at the CPPM laboratory in Marseille, France. We collaborated on ZH associated Higgs production in the neutrinos+jets final state. We worked on understanding the trigger efficiency of the ZH trigger and I discussed various aspects of multivariate techniques with my colleagues there. My graduate student Weigang Geng won an Eiffel fellowship and spent one year in France, working on the ZH analysis and trigger studies.

I have spent most of my time during the first three years as a postdoctoral researcher at Michigan State University on hardware efforts aimed at preparing the DØ experiment to take data. I was responsible for commissioning and operation of the Level 2 trigger system. I was also a member of several hardware and general trigger boards and chair of a Level 2 trigger review board in 2005. ATLAS experiment at the LHC

I spend a significant amount of my non-teaching time at the CERN laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, working on the ATLAS experiment. My focus is single top quark production and searches for a new Z’ boson in the di-lepton final state. I am also starting work on searches for new physics, which is the focus of the NSF CAREER grant that I received in 2010.

Under my guidance, the MSU group on ATLAS has started to study electroweak top quark interactions and to search for new heavy Z’ bosons. I am working with several undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers on the study of electroweak production of single top quarks at the LHC. We contributed to background estimation, b-tagging and trigger studies for the first ATLAS top quark pair production paper (Eur.Phys.J. C71, 1577, 2010).

Single top production at the LHC proceeds via the t-channel, s-channel or Wt associated production modes and I am involved in studying all three of them. I was editor of the ATLAS internal note describing the first t-channel measurement using 2010 data (ATLAS-CONF-2011-027). Since then we have completed several data analyses measuring the t-channel single top production cross section and setting limits on Wt associated and s-channel production using 2011 ATLAS data (ATLAS-CONF-2011-088, ATLAS-CONF-2011-104, ATLAS-CONF-2011-118). I was editor of the conference note and paper describing the observation of t-channel single top quark production with ATLAS (ATLAS-CONF-2011-101).

In preparation for ATLAS data taking we completed several studies of the sensitivity of ATLAS to single top quark production. We were the first to point out that single top quark production could be measured with very early datasets (ATLAS internal notes ATL-PHYS-INT-2009-094 and ATL-PHYS-INT-2010-118).

Together with graduate student Sarah Heim, postdoc Wojtek Fedorko and Professor Kirsten Tollefson I have worked on searches for new heavy bosons Z’, resulting in three publications (Phys.Lett. B700 163-180, 2011 Phys. Rev. Lett. 107 272002, 2011 and arXiv:1209.2535) and many conference updates (ATLAS-CONF-2011-083, ATLAS-CONF-2012-007 amongst others). Such a new heavy boson appears in many models of new physics, especially those with additional symmetries. The LHC is ideally suited to look for high mass resonances due to the significantly higher CM energy compared to the Tevatron. We have published the first results and we are continuously updating the analysis as ATLAS collects more data. I was editor of one of the ATLAS internal notes describing the analysis. The current ATLAS limits on di-lepton resonances are shown in Figure 4.

Together with other members of the MSU Atlas group, I am also working on the ATLAS trigger system and on the upgrade of the ATLAS first level calorimeter trigger to accommodate the ever-increasing LHC luminosity.

I have introduced several undergraduate and graduate students to the ATLAS and DØ experiments, trigger studies, single top physics, Z’ physics and advanced analysis techniques. Undergraduate students working with me have done many parton-level studies for the LHC and for the Tevatron using Madgraph samples, have analyzed ATLAS and DØ simulation and data samples, have worked on ATLAS upgrade studies, have taken DØ detector shifts, and have contributed to several internal ATLAS and DØ notes.

Phenomenological studies

I have been working with Professor C.-P. Yuan and his former student on phenomenological studies of single top quark production since 2004. In 2004 and 2005 we published phenomenological studies of single top quark production at the Tevatron at next-to-leading order (NLO) (Phys. Rev. D74, 054023, 2005 and Phys. Rev. D72, 094027, 2005).

We renewed our collaboration in 2010 with a focus on the study of single top quark physics at the LHC. Together with my graduate student Sarah Heim we published a detailed analysis of s-channel production at the LHC (Phys. Rev. D81, 0340005, 2010). Together with undergraduate Charles Mueller we analyzed t-channel single top production (Phys. Rev. D83: 034019, 2011). I have also contributed a phenomenological study of t-channel production and jet multiplicity to the 2010 Les Houches summary report (arXiv:1003.1241). I am also a co-author on a phenomenological analysis of the

search for a new fourth generation quark B’ in the Wt final state, together with a MSU theory student and undergraduate student Joe Nutter.

Neutrino physics

I took my first particle physics steps in neutrinos, on the MINOS and DONUT experiments. I continue to follow neutrino physics and wrote a paper on the potential for colliding neutrino beams with each other (Mod. Phys. Lett. A23: 2751-2761, 2009).

My thesis research was on the DONUT experiment at Fermilab. We were the first (and so far only) experiment to observe tau neutrino interactions directly. My thesis focused on the tau neutrino magnetic moment; searching for electromagnetic interactions of tau neutrinos in the DONUT detector.

I spent the first year as a graduate student at the University of Minnesota on the MINOS experiment, studying scintillator and photodetector options. While at Minnesota I also worked on the CMS experiment at CERN, designing an irradiation source and contributing to testbeam studies.

Outreach and service

Outreach with the planetarium In 2010 I started an outreach project as part of my CAREER grant to produce content

for the Abrams planetarium at MSU about the ATLAS experiment, the LHC, and its connection to astronomy and astrophysics. I am working with planetarium staff, physics professor Chip Brock and Communication Arts and Graphics Professor Karl Gude as well as ten undergraduate student animators, graphic designers, writers and music producers. We have put together a first clip that was played at the end of the regular planetarium show every weekend during Spring 2011. This clip was so well received and so well done that we were asked to produce the fall 2011 show for the Abrams planetarium. This 35-minute show is called Relics of the Big Bang and running every weekend. It covers dark matter and the Higgs boson, the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, and explains how MSU researchers are involved in the project. The entire show was created by MSU students, from the script to the animations and the audio. An example all-sky image that is shown on the planetarium dome is shown in Figure 5. This images is projected onto the dome, with the bottom of the image appearing in the front and the top of the image appearing at the back of the planetarium dome.

We are currently preparing this show for distribution to other planetariums around the world.

Together with colleagues at the University of Texas, Arlington and the University of California, Berkeley and several planetariums around the world, I am also working on a planetarium show utilizing full-dome video on the ATLAS experiment.
