Media Reports on Research Findings: 1. In May 2001, the official journal of the American Cancer Society Cancer issued a press release for our article (Du XL, Goodwin JS. Increase of chemotherapy use in older women with breast carcinoma from 1991 to 1996. Cancer. May 1, 2001;92(4):730-737). The national news magazine Hem/Onc today published a long story entitled “Chemotherapy use increases in elderly patients” in November 2001 Issue. It was also reported in Internal Medicine News magazine etc. 2. In September 2002, the U.S. Department of Defense Era of Hope National Breast Cancer Program meeting issued a press release for my research project funded by this program, entitled “Axillary dissection and survival of women after breast-conserving surgery for early-stage breast cancer”. Several radio news stations and medical news magazines, including Ivanhoe Broadcast News, Inc., and International Medical News, reported the findings. It was also highlighted in the UTMB Newsletter Impact on December 16, 2002.

3. In January 2003, the American College of Physicians and Annals of Internal Medicine issued a press release regarding our article that was published in Annals of Internal Medicine, January 21st issue, 2003 (Du XL, Key CR, Osborne C, Mahnken JD, Goodwin JS. Discrepancy between consensus recommendations and actual community use of adjuvant chemotherapy in women with breast cancer. Ann Intern Med. 2003;138:90-97). The UTMB Public Affairs Office also issued a longer press release regarding this article. The NBC and ABC news, CNN headline news, the New York Times (January 28, 2003), and TIME Magazine (February 3, 2003) reported the findings. 4. An internationally renowned oncology researcher, Dr. L. Balducci, was invited by the Journal editors for writing an editorial specifically on our research article published in the September issue of 2005 in the Journal of Gerontology (Medical Sciences), an official journal of the Gerontologic Society of America. This editorial praised the important contributions of our research. In his editorial, Dr. Balducci wrote “Du and colleagues have provided an important contribution to the field by: (a) demonstrating that adjuvant chemotherapy does not have a substantial impact in breast cancer-related mortality for women aged 70 and older; and (b) providing a demonstration of a very creative use of the SEER-Medicare database.” 5. In February 2006, the official journal of the American Cancer Society Cancer issued a press release for our article (Du XL, Fang S, Coker AL, Sanderson M, Aragaki C, Cormier JN, Xing Y, Gor BJ, Chan W. Racial Disparity and Socioeconomic Status in Association with Survival in Older Men with Local/Regional Stage Prostate Carcinoma: Findings From a Large Community-Based Cohort. Cancer. Published Online: February 13, 2006. Print Issue Date: March 15, 2006). The widely used wire service HEALTHDAY today

and Prostate Cancer Foundation reported the findings entitled “Poverty Behind Poor Prostate Cancer Outcomes in Black Men” By Meryl Hyman Harris on February 13, 2006. The findings were also reported in WebMD (2/13/06), medpageTODAY (2/13/06), Urology Times (2/16/06), Patient Health International (2/20/06), Physician’s Weekly (June 5, 2006), and many other medical professional/foundation websites. 6. The abstract entitled “Racial Disparities and Socioeconomic Status in Association with Survival in Older Men with Local/Regional Stage Prostate Cancer” by Du and colleagues at the UT School of Public Health has been selected for the best abstracts award (out of 1,646 abstract submissions) at the Annual Conference of the national AcademyHealth on June 25-27, 2006, in Seattle, WA. AcademyHealth is a leading international professional society for advancing research, policy and practice, and a premier forum for health services research and for Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The detail is available at http://www.academyhealth.org/arm/awards/abstracts.htm. The authors were invited to present the paper at a special session together with the article of the year. 7. On April 23, 2007, the official journal of the American Cancer Society Cancer issued a press release for our article (Du XL, Meyer TE, Franzini L. Meta-Analysis of Racial Disparities in Survival in Association with Socioeconomic Status among Men and Women with Colon Cancer. Cancer. 2007 June 1;109:2161-70). The findings were also reported in ScienceDaily.com (4/23/07), ASPH (Association of Schools of Public Health) Friday Letter (4/27/07), WebMD, ACS (American Cancer Society) website, MedicalNewsToday, Science Daily (4/23/07), Scientific American.com (4/24/07), and Distinctions of the UTHSC-H (July 2007). 8. In October, 2007, our article (Rohatgi N (MS student in epi), Du XL, Coker AL, Moye L, Wang M, Fang S. Chemotherapy and Survival for Patients with Multiple Myeloma: Findings from a Large Nationwide and Population-Based Cohort. American Journal of Clinical Oncology. 2007 Oct;30(5):540-548.) was selected by the Nature: Clinical Practice Oncology for Research Highlights (January 2008 issue), and by the Lancet Oncology for news item. 9. In January 2007, our article “Racial Disparities and Trends in Radiation Therapy After Breast-Conserving Surgery for Early-Stage Breast Cancer in Women, 1992 to 2002” in Ethnicity & Diseases was selected as a featured article in the journal and its abstract was selected to be published in New England Journal of Medicine (in the issue of 2007). 10.
