C4.2: Curriculum, Course and Laboratory Development

C4.2.1: Curriculum Development AT SULTAN QABOOS UNIVERSITY (1992 – 2014) At SQU, being the Chair of the Curriculum Committee of undergraduate and postgraduate programs for a long period, I put substantial effort during the different phases of the development of new programs and curricula to maintain the quality of the engineering program and to assure that it meets the standards and needs of the Sultanate of Oman. I played a key role in drafting the proposals of new undergraduate and postgraduate programs and its rationale, preparing the degree and study plans, setting the pre-requisites and course equivalency, auditing the course data sheets and timetabling the courses. The bifurcation of the department of Electrical and Electronics into two departments, namely Information Engineering (IE)and Electrical Engineering (EE), and later the merger process of EE and IE departments into the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department with four specializations (Computer Systems and Networks, Communication and Signal Processing, Electronic Instrumentation & Control and Power and Energy), posed many challenges for the Curriculum and Program Development Committee. As a chair of the Committee and with full cooperation from the ECE staff I handled it efficiently and satisfactorily without posing any suffering and delay in the study programs of the students. Also, the ECE curriculum committee, chaired by myself, played a major role in demonstrating to the ABET team the high standard curriculum adaption and implementation into the program. Finally, the efforts of the committee culminated successfully in receiving ABET accreditation of the ECE program. Further, I chaired the ECE-ABET subcommittee during visits of ABET teams for monitoring continuous improvements through their visits in 2006, 2010 and 2013. ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING PROGRAM (1993 – 1998) Involved as member of the committee formed to revise and modernize the curriculum of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Program for cohorts 1993 - 1997. The program was extensively updated to meet the challenges of drastic technological changes. INFORMATION ENGINEERING PROGRAM (1998 – 2000) As the coordinator of curriculum and timetabling committee of newly created department of Information Engineering (IE), I was actively involved in the development of curriculum structure for undergraduate and postgraduate programs of the department. With the help of one of the committee members, we created a new template to publish the degree plan, semester wise study plans and setting pre-requisites / co- requisites. We also prepared and published a list of equivalent courses for Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Information Engineering and Electrical Engineering Programs. With the help of one of the committee members, we compiled course descriptions, outlines and finally, submitted all the course data sheets to A & R department of SQU. ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING PROGRAM (2000 – 2014) Chaired a sub-committee constituted to develop the curriculum for the Electrical and Computer Engineering program with four specializations Computer Systems and Networks, Communication and Signal Processing, Electronic Instrumentation & Control and Power and Energy. This committee was formed due to the merger of IE and EE departments. The committee was responsible to look at all aspects of undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum, semester study plans, the pre-requisites / co- requisites and course equivalency for smooth transitions due to the merger of the departments. The committee was also responsible for compilation of course descriptions, outlines and submission of all the course data sheets to A & R department of SQU. In 2002, 2006 and 2010-14, I chaired a sub-committee of ECE-ABET committee responsible to revise the curriculum of ECE program to satisfy the ABET criteria.

AT ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY (1980 - 1992) During my job at AMU, India, I helped in the updating of curricula, modernizing and setting of laboratories, identifying and introducing of some key demanding courses of the time along with the supervising and advising of graduate and undergraduate students in their theses, dissertations, projects, studies, and industrial trainings. I was also involved in the preparation and presentation of proposals of Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering and Masters in Computer Applications programs as a committee member appointed by the vice-chancellor of the university.

C4.2.2: Course Development During the teaching career of over 36 years, the focus of my effort has been to update the course materials and teaching methodologies for teachings of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Also strives for adding new courses and software in the demanding areas of specialization as to match the timely required course structures of any other well developed engineering institutes of the world. In summary, I adapted dynamism in teaching courses via the process involving:

o Development of the course contents and mapping it with international standards; o Selection and ordering of updated text-books; o Design and testing of lab experiments and setups; o Selection and ordering of experiments kits and components; o Preparation of lab manuals for students and mentoring technicians; o Selection and application of supportive software (like VHDL (Verilog), Logic Works, Logisim, Geany,

PSPICE, ORCAD, CADENCE, MATLAB and LABVIEW o Selection of computer simulators to supports the practical side of some advanced experiments (like

fault-tolerant simulator) due to limitations in budget and lab time allotted slots; o Use to develop small programs to demonstrate the physical meaning of the mathematical models. In

courses like signals and systems, linear system theory and digital systems, data security, fault diagnosis and error coding to enhance the motivation amongst the students and forcing them to practice the software skills.

o Use Web CT/Moodle to interact with my students and efficiently providing of the supporting course materials.

Further, I want to highlight that I acted as the main coordinator for a number of important courses with large sections (80 to 120 students), notably digital logic design, signals and systems, circuit analysis, microprocessors and various programming language courses. During this process, not only was I involved in the development of the courses, I also had received the opportunities to teach these courses, as “The First Instructor” at the institutes where served or serving. Following is the list of such courses.

o Academic advisor for a group of undergraduate students from cohorts 1992, 93, 94, 98, 2000, and 2004-2007.

o Academic advisor for a group of postgraduate students from cohorts 1998 - 2006 and 2008 - 2015. o Since 2007 (2007 – 2015), as a chair of ECE academic advising committee handling typical advisement

problems of all undergraduate and postgraduate students of ECE department in coordination with the advisors of the students.

o With effect from 2015, chairing the Pre-Specialization Academic Unit of College of Engineering.

As an advisor I have designed some Excel templates to help advisement and degree auditing effectively and efficiently. The designed Excel templates were very useful till the non-existence of SIS system at SQU. I pay my attention to my advisees and help and guide them accordingly in critical situations. For good students I used to write recommendation letters for extra loads. I motivate my advisees for selection of majors, minors with careful thoughts interests. Even I recommend them for the change of the college of their interest of studies if they get selected. I always keep track of probation students for their performance through the instructor’s feedback. If I find appropriate I used to refer my advisees for counseling. I believe and feel my advisees are at very critical of age that needs proper guidance and advice. For graduating students I teach them how to prepare an effective CV and how to apply in different organizations. Also, I was involved in advising of undergraduate and postgraduate students while served at Aligarh Muslim University during 1980 - 1992.
