Merits in teaching and pedagogical competenceRecently, Karlos Artto has developed project management teaching in 2017 and 2018 in theFITech (Finnish Institute of Technology) network of universities of technology (Aalto, ÅboAkademi University, Tampere University of Technology, Oulu University): he has developedan entensive number of pedagogical videos (in both English and Finnish languages) forintroduction to project management and advanced project management courses foruniversities of technology, and he has participated in providing teaching through new onlineand other teaching methods at the introduction and advanced course levels – both face-to-faceand online – for Finnish FITech network of universities of technology students.

Furthermore, in 2018 Karlos Artto has developed real-life project video teaching material foradvanced project management teaching, by engaging in making videos of real life projects, firms, and inherent project business. This has taken place as Aalto Online Learning (A!Ole)Reach-Out Project Videos (ROPV) video development. Under this scheme, Karlos Artto alsoleads the outdoor project video development by professors in Åbo Akademi University,Tampere University of Technology, and Oulu University. The outdoor videos with real-worldprojects and their management, and company executive/manager involvement bring thestudents understanding of the practical application of project management. Major accomplishments and future researchKarlos Artto has established the research field of ‘project business’ as an interdisciplinaryfield, where established management and organization theories are used to research projectsas temporary organizations beyond the state-of-the-art of mainstream project management1.Furthermore, Karlos Artto has established the ‘project business’ community amongdistinguished international professors and their research groups in top universities. Examplesof events, activities, and/or publications manifesting the ‘project business’ as aninterdisciplinary field, include: 1) Finnish Project Business research since early 1990’s, 2)articles “What is Project Business?” and “Project business as a research field”, 3) thecollaboration with Stanford and UCL professors in co-authoring, and 4) textbooks on ProjectBusiness (in Finnish, in English, forthcoming in Chinese language).

Karlos Artto has established an international project business network of scholars; thisnetwork was initiated in a first-of-its-kind 1st International Project Business workshop in June29 - July 1, 2010, at Bengtskär Lighthouse in the Bengtskär island in the outer archipelago ofthe West coast of Finland. The project business workshop has since expanded to internationaldimension: 2nd worskhop was held in 2011 in Trondheim, Norway, the 3rd workshop in 2012in Brighton, UK, the 4th workshop, 2013, Pescara, Italy, the 5th workshop in 2014 in Oulu,Finland, the 6th workshop 2015 in Trondheim, Norway, the 7th workshop in 2016 in Umeå,

1 Regarding project business of a single project, the project can be seen as a temporary organization that usesmultiple firms as its resources for achieving the project’s business goal. Furthermore, the end-product (as acomplex system) and the use value of the end-product in the operations phase (after the project’s completion) inthe system lifecycle are central elements of the project business, as far as single projects are concerned. At thelevel of a firm, on the other hand, the locus of project business is in the firm’s management, with questions ofhow the firm uses projects as its business vehicles, e.g. how projects are used for the firm’s technologydevelopment, customer solution deliveries, supplier network development, strategy renewal, or many otherpurposes connected to the firm and its business.

Sweden, the 8th workshop in 2017 in Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey, the 9th

workshop in 2018 in Leeds, UK, and the 10th Anniversary Project Business workshop in 2019will be held at Aalto University campus in Otaniemi, Finland, hosted by Karlos Artto.

In regard to future reseach, Karlos Artto works towards developing a new projectmanagement theory. Management of value creation through dynamic product-organizationinteraction in individual projects is in the core of this theory development. The project’svalue creation is facilitated by the project’s end-product (by broad definition) which is theonly reason why the project has been initiated. Therefore, product-organizationinterdependence is central in a project’s logic of creating value2. Karlos Artto’s futureresearch on value creation focuses on understanding the interdependence between the ever-changing project’s product design and organization over the project’s lifecycle, for use valuein the later operations phase of the system lifecycle. In this way, Karlos Artto researchesprojects as ultimate business vehicles with long-term benefits for firms, public organizations, and for the society as a whole.

2 In creating value, the most valuable end-product design is the ultimate aim, and designing and creating thisend-product must be organized for, which in a natural way connects the project’s organization to the end-product through interaction.
