RESEARCH RELATED ACTIVITIES

My main areas of research have been sleep and breathing disorders. As a consequence of 30 years in this area I have built up a national and international reputation. I am regularly asked to talk both at national and international meetings, contribute chapters to international textbooks, and write reviews for mainstream journals. For example in 1996 I was asked to talk at the American Thoracic Society, Lyon, Nassau and University of Virginia (I also had to turn down two other requests), in 1997 I was asked to talk at two international meetings in London and Edinburgh, and in 1998 I talked in Hong Kong, Chicago, Brazil, Argentina and Grenoble. In 1999 I was invited to talk at the American Thoracic Society (San Diego), American Society of Professional Sleep Societies (keynote speaker, Orlando), International ENT society (Cambridge) and European Respiratory Society (Madrid). Over 2000 and 2001 I was invited to talk at international meetings in Sydney, Vancouver, Florence Switzerland, Bordeaux, San Francisco and Bologna, with other invitations to Toronto, Melbourne Seattle and Las Vegas that I was unable to accept. In addition there were many national meetings (both in the respiratory and ENT world) to which I have been invited to contribute. In 2002 I was an invited speaker at international meetings in Atlanta, Zurich, Iceland, and was an RCP college lecture in Belfast. In 2003 I was invited to speak in the UK, Denmark and Finland and have had to turn down other such invites in the US. I again talked on the RCP advanced Medicine course for 2003. I have been invited to talk at international conferences in 2004, 2005 and 2006 but have turned most down due to work commitments. I did a meet the professor session and chaired at the American Thoracic Society meeting in May 2006. I was asked top do three presentations at the ATS in 2007 and two at the ATS in 2008. Also asked to give presentations to the Irish sleep society and Medical College of Sri Lankar in 2008. Invited presentations to the ATS 2009, and visiting professor University of Sydney 2009. Invited presentations at ATS, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013.

WORKING PARTIES/CONSULTANCIES I was extensively involved with an EEC-directed working group on standardisation of investigative techniques for sleep disorders. This required eight meetings in Europe during 1990-1992 and I took on the responsibility to report on the pulmonology aspects of investigating sleep disorders. This involved assembling 14 European experts for four 2-day meetings and writing a report on current practices and future recommendations, published in December 1992. This has also led to cooperative research with a Dutch group on vastly improved ways to analyse the EEG. With four other members of the British Thoracic Society (and at the request of council) we prepared a submission document outlining the case for funding of sleep and breathing disorders by the NHS. I also sat on a Royal College of Physicians working party on Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, that reported October 1993 and re-reported on in 1997. I also took part in a consensus group in Sweden on cardiovascular consequences of sleep apnoea, publishing August 1993. I was also involved with two American Thoracic Society expert working groups in 1998. I sat on a committee for the DOH on specialist respiratory services (2001/2). I am on the committee of the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network looking at the management of sleep apnoea in adults (2000-03). I am part of the BTS peer review process, visiting other centres to provide feedback. I am on the BTS working party for sleep apnoea and responsible for designing training courses for staff entering the field, and latterly the sleep advisory group for the BTS. I have been involved with NICE on a CPAP appraisal, the 16 week wait pathway for sleep, and the RCP map of medicine project. I have been involved in several recent initiatives related to drowsy drivers, one parliamentary with Meg Munn MP. Since 2013 I have been a consultant to ResMed UK.

COURSES One week course on Management in the NHS at the King's Fund Centre, September 1989. Twelve day (spread out) management course for consultants in management at Templeton College, Oxford, 1992. “Educating consultants”. Two day course on improving educating techniques for junior staff and students. GCP for research trials 2009

REVIEWING I was a sub editor for Journal of Sleep Research (7 years). I served 3 year stints as sub editor for three other journals, Clinical Science, Physiological Measurement and Journal of Ambulatory Monitoring. I regularly review for Thorax, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, and European Journal of Respiratory Medicine: occasional reviewer for BMJ, Lancet, Respiratory Medicine, Sleep, and Int J Obesity. I also review for the NHS R&D Coordinating Centre for Health Technology Assessment, Wellcome Trust.
