• In 2013 contacted course responsible 8th semester faculty to discuss possibility of the Directors and I talking to this class about UTEP SoN Graduate Programs. Suggested to class that while working to obtain necessary experience to apply to NP Programs they could obtain MSN in either MSN or NE and then apply as PMSN to NP program of choice after they had obtained necessary experience.

Research Strategic Plan

• Instrumental in providing the impetus for the formation of the original task force of 4 SoN faculty who

focused on the development of a strategic research plan for the School of Nursing. This group met for over a year and a half and added two more members before completion of the final strategic research plan which was then approved by the School of Nursing Dean.

MSN Major Curriculum Revisions

• Led NP faculty through major curriculum revisions to separate NP concentrations from shared courses into individual, NP specific courses, add additional courses and revise existing courses to reflect changes in accreditation standards applicable to the NP concentrations.

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

• Revised and updated the DNP proposal and submitted for approval by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).

• Developed and presented faculty workshops to prepare faculty for the required site visit from the

THECB. Responsible for coordination of the THECB site visit for review of the proposed DNP.

• Revised and updated the DNP proposal to reflect recommendations from the site visitors and prepared the proposal for submission to the UT Regents. This included revision of degree plan to move from 7

semesters to 5 semesters, deleting 2 courses, addition of 5 courses and major revision of 4 courses.

• Prepared talking points and executive summary for Provost and President to use at UT Regents meeting.

Graduate Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist Program (Mental Health via Nursing Distance Education [MIND] Project)

• Project designed to address behavioral health needs for rural/underserved populations through education of advanced practice psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners/clinical nurse specialists. Competencies for graduates included ability to provide therapy/counseling; work with co-morbidities related to alcohol and drug abuse, and medication management. Key aspect of the project was increasing access to nurses from rural/underserved areas that would allow them to remain in their home areas during the program and after graduation.

• Responsible for development and implementation of adult psychiatric-mental health nursing advanced

practice curriculum that incorporated treatment of addictive disorders and preparation for practice as a clinical nurse specialist or nurse practitioner (both with prescriptive privileges). Responsible for implementing curriculum changes required to meet national new PMH nurse practitioner standards when the new standards were implemented.

Specific Curriculum Development:

• Community Mental Health Component Role: Team leader

Coordinated development, implementation and evaluation of a 3-credit course taught using an intensive on campus and WebCT format. Course was designed to address competencies related to working with minority and underserved populations.

• Cultural Competence Component Role: Co-Team leader

Collaborated with co- team leader to incorporate cultural competency development with PMH students using an attitude, knowledge, skills approach. Developed practicum Reporting forms to track student adaptations to reflect cultural competence.

• Addictions Component Role: Developer of courses/faculty mentor Developed two web-based addictions courses: Pharmacology of Addictions and Addictive Disorders. Mentored faculty assigned to teach courses.

• Didactic Psychiatric-Mental Health Content Role: Lead curriculum designer/faculty mentor Updated PMH curriculum to include a new course in psychopharmacology, added credits to clinical courses and modified course sequencing to promote simple to complex leveling of courses.

Student Recruitment, Advisement, Retention/Progression:

Recruitment Role: Primary Responsibility

Worked with marketing specialist to develop student recruitment brochure and branding of project (MIND). Coordinated working with media specialist in development of web site. Conducted recruitment workshops throughout New Mexico and El Paso. Coordinated advertisements via radio, television, and print. Served as primary respondent to prospective student inquires.

Advisement Role: Student Advisor

Advisor for over 100 students regarding degree plans and progression. Worked with university financial aid, registrar, distance education college, and provost to facilitate student acceptance and enrollment in MSN. Complete, validate, and submit student requests related to national certification examinations, state licensure, & health agency privileges. Dispersion of students from across the state and nation increased the complexity of the above tasks/activities.

Retention/Progression/Graduation Role: Chair/Member of Comprehensive Orals Committee

Coordinated administration and evaluation of comprehensive examination (written and oral components) for all PMH students from 2006 to 2009.

Project Outcomes:

Student Admission, Progress, & Graduation Role: PMH MSN Program Director Student enrollment, progression, and graduation rates increased from 6 continuing and 8 new students in 2004 to 36 continuing and 38 new students in 2009. There were fifteen graduates in May 2008 and nineteen in May 2009.

National Board Certifications Role: PMH MSN Director

All PMH graduates from 2004-2009 successfully completed the national certification examinations. Pass rate over 95%.

Program Sustainability Role: Co-Advocate

With fellow School of Nursing faculty advocate worked through PMH Community Advisory Committee, local state senator, and NM Governor’s Office to obtain recurring funding ($325,000; $325,000; $410,000) for ongoing support of the PMH track during 2008, 2009 and 2010.

BSN Completion Project (2002-2003)

• Project directed towards increasing access to BSN completion education for Associate Degree nurses in rural/underserved areas of New Mexico.

Transition of RN to BSN Courses to Distance Education Format Role: BSN Faculty Team Member

Led the team to develop program WebCT templates and design course assignments and content to reflect a 50% WebCT and 50% interactive television format for didactic classes for RN-BSN program. Innovative assignments included in-depth interviews of well elderly family or community members and creative presentations of the information obtained. Instituted student poster presentations to showcase RN-BSN students’ final quality improvement projects.

APA and Plagiarism Module for BSN and MSN students (2005-2009)

• In response to ongoing faculty concerns related to students’ inappropriate use of APA and apparently limited knowledge of key aspects of plagiarism I developed an instructive module.

Role: Developer/Presenter Developed and presented APA and Plagiarism module. Module included pre/post tests, power point presentation, examples of APA format and ways to avoid plagiarism

through use of proper citations and documentation. This Module was adapted for use by BSN, MSN and PhD Programs.

Student Advising 2006 - 2009 NMSU Exito Program- Mentored seven Hispanic pre- nursing students. This student Retention program was designed to support minority students during their first year on campus. All students I mentored progressed to the sophomore year. 2004 - 2009 Graduate Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Advisor Responsible for all aspects of advising to include: pre-admission, initial degree plan development and ongoing advising through graduation, and completion of certification application and advanced licensure documentation. Over 74 graduate advisees in December 2008. Pre- admission advising included my communicating with all individuals inquiring about graduate PMH nursing program and working with those students who applied for admission. A unique component of all advising activities was the national scope from which the program drew students which necessitated becoming familiar with the advanced practice licensure rules in over 13 states. 2002 -2004 Undergraduate student advising for 29 students

This varies between 250-350 hours per year. I have provided over 2000 hours of uncompensated psychiatric mental health services over the past 12 years. These services have been provided to individuals in the community with limited or no mental health benefits. I have been a certified PMHCNS since 1992 and a PMHNP since 1/2003.
