ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS

Director, Master of Public Affairs Program, Department of Political Science and Public Affairs, Western Carolina University, Graduate Campus, Asheville, North Carolina, Main Campus, Cullowhee, North Carolina. July 2010 to Present.

I serve as primary administrator and policy leader for the MPA program offered at the Western Carolina University. The program is offered on the WCU Graduate Campus in Asheville, North Carolina with some courses on the main campus in Cullowhee and some courses offered online. I manage recruitment of students, curriculum, faculty, scheduling, and cultivation of alumni support. Tasks include working closely with students, promotion and advertising of the program, cultivating employment and internship opportunities, preparation for NASPAA accreditation, and internal and external relations for the program. As a faculty member, I teach in the program and also teach undergraduate courses on the main campus in Cullowhee, North Carolina.

Interim Director of the School of Public Administration and Policy and Associate Dean of the College, Eller College of Management, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona. July 2008 – January 2009.

Served as Interim Director And Associate Dean of the School. Managed the crisis of our School’s proposed elimination by the Dean of the Eller College into a merger (with Political Science) as a new School of Government and Public Policy. This included working with the media, mobilization of external constituents, faculty, students, and managing our path through several internal transformation/merger processes. Managed the promotion of Dr. Edella Schlager to Full Professor. Negotiated and managed the 2008 School budget ($1.7 Million). Helped lead the effort to reform our curriculum by moving our MPA program to the evening to serve in-service professionals, moved other courses to evening to capture additional revenue for the department, and managed faculty and staff.

Elected-Member, University of Arizona, Strategic Planning and Budgetary Advisory Committee, 2007-Present.Co-Chaired, Subcommittee on the Budget, 2007-2009. Directed the costing out of the Strategic plan. Provided advice and criteria on the process for university budget cuts to the Provost and President. Member, Ad Hoc Committee on Budget Criteria. Summer 2008. Committee was charged with providing strategic budget criteria to the Provost on how to make short-term cuts to the university. Member, Ad Hoc Faculty Committee on Program Cuts. Committee was created by the Faculty Chair to provide advice on measures and criteria for potential program cuts in fiscal year 2009.

School of Government and Public Policy’s Merger Executive Transition Team. May 2009-Present.The committee was charged with negotiating and implementing the merger between Public Administration and Political science into the new School of Government and Public Policy. As part of this team, I chaired the Promotion and Tenure Committee which drafted and negotiated a new system of Promotion and Tenure, Annual Merit Review, and a system for Faculty Mentoring. I served on a committee that also drafted by-laws for the new School. I also took the lead on creation of a new Alumni Group for the School and worked with the University Alumni Association, University Development, and College staff to do phone outreach to all alums announcing the new school and asking for donations. I worked with College staff to create an alumni database and website for the group.

Principal Representative to the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration. School of Public Administration and Policy, University of Arizona. Fall 2008 to Present.Was asked by my Director, Brint Milward, to become the principal representative of our program to NASPAA after preparing our self study for reaccreditation in the 2007-2008 academic year. In the 2008-2009 academic year, I led our reaccreditation effort by submitting our self study report, corresponding with COPRA, responding to COPRAs initial reaccreditation report, by managing and leading our site visit, and by providing the response to the site visit team’s report to COPRA.

City of Tucson

Appointed Public Member, Tucson Crime Lab Oversight Commission. May 2006-Present. The commission was appointed on an ad hoc basis to provide oversight of problems and issues facing the ethical collection and analysis of evidence. The commission includes members of law enforcement, prosecution, City of Tucson Staff, and public members.

Research Advisory Committee Member, City of Tucson Police Department. Fall 2006- 2009. The committee provides academic advisement to a grant funded, double-blind, experimental study of police line-up procedures.
