Present  Teaching  Activities,  Goals,  and  Curricula:  • Objectives  -‐  My  primary  teaching  objective  is  to  help  each  student  develop  a  broad  and

balanced  approach  toward  his/her  education  and  artistry.  Not  knowing  what  their  future  might  hold,  I  try  to  prepare  them  for  a  wide  variety  of  artistic  and  career  possibilities.  We  explore  how  musicians  produce  artistic  product  three  basic  ways:  performing  previously  composed  music,  improvisation,  and  composition.  The  desire  of  some  students  to  specialize  in  just  one  component  may  deter  them  from  the  pursuit  of  this  more  balanced  three-‐part  artistic  vision.  Related  musical  disciplines  are  a  result  of  these  artistic  products  and  include  theory,  history,  music  criticism,  manufacturing,  sales,  publishing,  and  software  development,  to  name  a  few.

• Advisement:  includes:  academic/curricular  guidance,  professional  referrals,  recommendation  letters  and  phone  calls,  graduate  school  advisement,  and  other  career  planning,  the  bulk  of  which  occurs  during  office  hours.

• Curriculum  Overview  –  our  majors  are  enrolled  in  diverse  undergraduate  and  graduate  degrees  yet  are  encouraged  to  work  together  as  a  unified  studio  team.  They  bond  together  through  three  primary  activities;  Applied  Percussion  Studies,  the  YSU  Percussion  Ensemble,  and  the  Youngstown  Percussion  Collective  -‐  a  YSU  Student  Organization.

• Applied  Percussion  includes  three  components,  seminar  class,  group  lessons,  and  private  lessons.

o Applied  Curriculum:     Undergraduate:  My  educational  philosophy  is  to  provide  each  undergraduate  a

broad  “Total  Percussion”  foundation,  which  I  understand  as  consisting  of  fundamental  musicianship  skills,  instrumental  techniques,  and  core  repertoire  familiarity.  These  goals  may  be  pursued  via  the  seven  core  percussion  instrument  areas  that  include:  snare  drum,  keyboard,  timpani,  drumset,  orchestral  accessories,  multiple  percussion,  and  world  percussion.  The  freshman  and  sophomore  years  are  primarily  dedicated  to  building  core  musicianship  skills  and  instrumental  techniques  and  the  junior  and  senior  years  are  primarily  dedicated  to  preparing  solo  and  chamber  music  recital  repertoire  to  address  individual  career  goals.

Graduate:  Graduate  students  typically  dedicate  their  first  year  to  improving  core  areas  of  interest  and  their  second  year  preparing  solo  and  chamber  music  for  their  graduate  recital.

o Small  group  lessons:  I  have  (since  1997)  offered  small  group  lessons.  Each  group  meets  approximately  13  times  per  semester.  In  order  to  adhere  to  YSU-‐OEA  workload  regulations,  I  reduce  (pending  studio  consensus  each  year)  each  student’s  15  private  lessons  to  13.  This  provides  two  hours  per  student  and  multiplied  by  my  typical  load  of  13-‐14  applied  students,  provides  26-‐28  hours  of  contact  time  to  reallocate  to  group  lessons  each  term.  Each  student  is  assigned  at  least  one  group  lesson  per  semester,  but  is  welcome  to  observe  other  groups  as  well.  In  all,  contact  time  is  increased  from  15  to  at  least  26  hours  per  semester;  not  counting  the  15  seminar  class  hours.  Group  lessons  allow  us  to  pursue  student  and  faculty  collaborations  through  performance,  collegial  critiques,  listening,  analysis,  discussion,  and  student  presentations.  Our  students  enjoy  group  lessons  and  these  have  proven  effective  in  providing  educational  opportunities  that  are  difficult  to  address  in  private  lessons  and  seminar  class.  Unlike  private  lessons,  group  lessons  provide  an  opportunity  for  our  students,  many  of  who  are  prospective  teachers,  to  develop  their  pedagogical  skills  while  critiquing  and  teaching  student  colleagues.  Group  lessons  also  build  the  teamwork  culture  that  is  central  to  a  functional  percussion  studio.  Adjunct  faculty  and  the  percussion  TA  often  offer  small  group  lessons  as  well.

o Student  Recitals:  In  2004,  I  established  a  unique  student  recital  policy  and  the  results  have  proven  effective.  We  hold  a  recital  advisement  conference  the  first  two  weeks  of  fall  term,  in  which  student  recitals  are  scheduled.  This  far-‐in-‐advance

 Glenn  Schaft  —  Curriculum  Vitae

6

planning  process  helps  me  more  evenly  distribute  recitals,  better  determine  the  feasibility  of  repertoire,  has  improved  student  preparation,  resulted  in  higher  recital  hearing  pass  rates,  improved  our  ability  to  book  desired  venues  and  secure  recital  hearing  committee  members,  more  evenly  distributed  recitals  throughout  the  semester  (including  no  recitals  during  weekends,  holidays,  or  final  exams),  and  has  resulted  in  improved  recital  attendance  due  to  better  event  distribution,  better  publicity,  and  longer  advance  notice.

o Studio  Recitals:  Each  major  must  perform  a  solo  and/or  chamber  music  at  a  Percussion  Studio  Recital  once  each  semester.  Students  prepare  their  program  information  and  the  Percussion  TA  compiles  the  programs  under  my  supervision.

o Portfolio:  Each  student  publishes  a  website,  that  serves  as  a  portfolio  or  process-‐folio,  beginning  their  first  semester.  They  secure  a  free  website  design  software  program  such  as  www.wix.com  and  a  personal  URL  address.  Their  site  includes:  resume,  repertoire  list,  biography,  demo  recordings,  publicity  photos,  contact  information,  and  programs  they  have  performed  in.  These  projects  help  me  understand  how  students  might  best  represent  their  accomplishments  and  how  I  might  help  them  develop  a  marketing  plan  to  promote  their  career.  I  assess  their  website  during  a  final  exam  week  advisement  conference  each  semester,  grade  them,  and  suggest  improvements  and  revisions  due  the  following  term.  We  repeat  this  process  throughout  the  sequence  of  applied  percussion  courses.

• YSU  Percussion  Ensemble:  performs  two  on-‐campus  concerts  each  semester:  a  35'  program  for  Butler  Institute  of  Art  Noontime  Series  and  a  90’  major  repertory  evening  concert.  My  graduate  teaching  assistant  and  I  select  repertoire  and  write  the  programs.

• Faculty  Advisor  to  YPC:  I  serve  as  the  faculty  advisor  for  the  Youngstown  Percussion  Collective  and  my  activities  are  balanced  between  scholarship,  teaching,  and  service.  My  students,  faculty  colleagues,  and  I  founded  YPC  in  2002  and  it  is  a  vibrant  and  active  student  organization  open  to  any  YSU  student  or  alum.  In  2009,  I  founded  an  educational  outreach  component,  the  YPC  Touring  Ensemble,  that  performs  K-‐12  Percussion  Assembly  Programs  in  regional  schools.  This  performance/demonstration  ensemble  includes  an  elite  quintet  elected  annually  by  the  membership.  I  help  them  prepare  their  50-‐minute  program,  publish  advertisement,  contract  gigs,  and  attend  most  gigs.  The  performance  fee  (typically  $200-‐500)  serves  as  YPC  fundraising  and  travel  reimbursement  for  the  performers  who  travel  with  personal  vehicles.

• Student  Ensemble  Performances:  An  important  component  of  my  teaching  is  attending  student  ensemble  performances:  YSU  Bands,  Orchestras,  and  Jazz  concerts,  to  name  a  few.  Subsequently,  I  meet  with  my  students  to  discuss  their  performance  individually  and  as  a  percussion  section;  sometimes  immediately  afterwards,  other  times  in  a  group  lesson  or  seminar  class  later  that  week.  I  also  attend  select  off-‐campus  gigs  and  offer  feedback  in  private  lessons  or  office  hours.

• Assessment:  includes  both  student  and  faculty  assessment.  Percussion  students  must  perform  self-‐assessments  throughout  the  semester;  in  each  private  lesson,  group  lesson,  seminar  class,  and  percussion  ensemble  rehearsal.  I  evaluate  each  student  in  terms  of  their  course  level’s  curricular  expectations,  their  academic  aptitude/potential,  and  their  degree  of  progress  throughout  the  semester.

Curriculum  Development:  • Presently  completing  (reviews/editing  stage)  a  190-‐page  book  entitled  Chops  and  Concepts:

A  drummers  guide  to  improvisation,  technique,  and  musical  interpretation.  This  book  is  designed  for  use  in  my  private  and  group  lessons  and  commercial  publication.

• Written  instructional  handbooks  for:  Timpani,  Snare  Drum,  Keyboard  Percussion,  Auxiliary  Percussion,  Drumset,  and  Hand  Drums.  These  are  self-‐published,  some  are  available  on  our  website,  others  due  to  copyright  and  future  publication  plans  are  only  made  available  to  my  students  on  a  per-‐case,  as-‐needed,  basis.

Instrument  Practice:    My  primary  goals  are  two-‐fold:

1. Improve  my  ability  to  physically/technically  execute  what  I  audiate.    2. Learn  new  rhythmic  concepts  and  skills  from  West  African,  Latin  American,  North  and  South

Indian  classical  traditions,  and  their  applications  to  drumset  and  other  instruments.

Research,  Writing,  Composition:  • I  was  awarded  a  Faculty  Improvement  Leave  (spring  2008)  to  begin  writing  a  drumset  book.

[Document  Title]  —  A  drummer’s  guide  to

improvisation,  technique,  and  musical  interpretation.  It  is  an  advanced  level  text  that  explores  improvisational  techniques  and  concepts,  musical  interpretation,  practice  techniques  and  concepts,  physical  coordination  and  ambidexterity  exercises,  timekeeping,  soloing,  and  various  pedagogical  issues.  From  2009  through  2012  I  continued  writing,  but  placed  the  book  in  a  secondary  position,  in  order  to  dedicate  the  bulk  of  my  scholarship  time  to  several  unique  and  valuable  opportunities  described  below.

• The  Youngstown  Percussion  Collective  and  I  embarked  on  a  comprehensive  commission  project,  entitled  “Forms  Of  Things  Unknown,”  with  colleague  and  composer  Dave  Morgan  and  this  opportunity  proved  to  be  extraordinary.  It  represented  my  largest  scholarship,  teaching,  and  service  effort  from  2010-‐12.  o From  September  2010  through  Summer  2012  I  dedicated  many  hours  to  YPC,  serving  as  the

projects  executive  producer  in  strategic  planning  meetings,  fundraising  events,  rehearsals,  performances,  recording,  editing,  mixing,  and  mastering.

o Our  students  developed  a  degree  of  self-‐direction  that  previously  proved  elusive  via  more  traditional  curricular  offerings.

o We  created  a  unique  synthesis  between  our  applied  percussion  courses,  Percussion  Ensemble,  faculty,  and  the  Youngstown  Percussion  Collective  that  redefined  the  expectations  of  what  our  students  were  capable  of  achieving.

o Our  students  envisioned  the  project,  fundraised  many  thousands  of  dollars,  collaborated  with  the  composer  in  sixty  hours  of  Percussion  Ensemble  rehearsals,  collaborated  with  FPA  students  in  Communications  and  Art,  presented  the  world  premiere  at  YSU,  toured  to  Columbus  to  perform  it  at  the  2012  OMEA  Professional  Conference,  recorded,  edited,  mixed,  and  mastered  the  compact  disc,  collaborated  with  a  YSU  art  major  to  design  the  album  artwork,  researched  commercial  duplication  and  music  dissemination  options  both  in  hard  copy  and  online,  published  their  own  YPC  website  www.youngstownpercussioncollective.org,  held  a  CD  release  party  May  2012  at  the  Lemon  Grove  downtown  Youngstown,  and  finished  the  academic  year  with  a  healthy  surplus  in  their  YPC  budget.

o It  was  my  pleasure  to  be  a  part  of  this  entire  process  and  help  facilitate  and  witness  our  students’  progress.  This  was  the  most  rewarding  educational  initiative  I  have  been  a  part  of  at  YSU.

• I  composed  two  works  and  arranged  several  others  for  faculty  recitals  I  presented  in  2010  and  2011.  These  included  guest  artists,  faculty,  and  Dana  alums  such  as  Nathan  Douds,  Dave  Morgan,  Dave  Kana,  Theron  Brown,  Dan  Wilson,  Ed  Davis,  and  Tim  Harker.

• I  wrote,  composed,  and  self-‐published  a  series  of  instructional  papers  for  rhythm,  snare  drum,  and  keyboard  (downloadable  PDF’s)  on  our  percussion  website  www.ysu.edu/percussion.

Service  Activities

Mission:    My  primary  service  mission  might  best  be  described  as  seeking  to  provide  a  vibrant  community  of  percussion  artist/scholars  and  events.  Although  this  community  might  be  conceived  as  originating  on-‐campus,  it  actually  extends  throughout  our  community,  region,  and  beyond.  At  an  international  level,  I  continue  since  1999,  to  serve  on  the  Percussive  Arts  Society  Drumset  Committee.  Presently,  our  staff  includes  ten  faculty  and  staff,  frequent  visiting  guest  artists,  worldwide  YSU  percussion  alumni,  present  percussion  majors,  non-‐majors  who  participate  in  our  various  Dana  musical  offerings,  prospective  students,  parents,  and  interested  community  members.  Such  a  community  is  built  upon  the  quality  of  myriad  interdependent  elements  such  as  a  vital  regional  arts  scene,  university,  music  school,  faculty,  students,  curriculum,  and  our  facilities  and  instruments.  The  supporting  materials  binder  attachments  “Student  Accomplishments”  and  “Testimonials”  document  some  of  this  community.

Primary  Activities  -‐  I  seek  to  build  two  things:       1.  Scholarship/community  -‐  include  two  interrelated  activities:

A. Serve  as  founder/member/faculty  advisor  of  the  Youngstown  Percussion  Collective.    B. Host  myriad  guest  artists/scholars.  I  seek  to  provide  a  model  of  seamless  connection

between  scholarship,  teaching,  and  service.  I  trust  that  such  a  model  will  inspire  my  students  and  serve  them  well  in  whatever  their  futures  hold.

  2.  Instruments/facilities.  I  seek  to  improve  our  facilities  and  instrument  collection  and  emphasize  two  components:

A. Create  and  maintain  professional  artist  endorsement  relationships  with  numerous  percussion  instrument  manufactures  that  have  proved  mutually  beneficial  to  YSU  and  our  sponsoring  corporations.

B. Percussion  Coordinator  for  all  YSU  percussion  staffing  and  logistical  related  needs.    Although  the  quality  of  our  facilities  and  instruments  might  appear  to  be  the  least  important  element  of  my  service  mission,  in  the  percussion  domain,  functional  facilities  and  an  adequate  instrument  inventory  are  an  indispensible  determinant  of  student  and  faculty  success.  My  dream  is  that  every  YSU  percussion  student  might  walk  into  a  percussion  practice  room  or  rehearsal  studio  and  undergo  a  similar  amount  of  preparation  as  an  oboist  or  clarinetist  in  terms  of  getting  ready  to  rehearse  or  practice.  To  provide  such  opportunities,  functional  considerations  such  as  room  size,  doorway  width,  acoustical  isolation,  where  and  how  things  are  stored,  and  an  extensive  instrument  collection  are  crucial.  Although  we  have  made  improvements  in  terms  of  increasing  the  number  of  practice  rooms  and  instruments  since  my  arrival  in  1996,  we  still  have  much  work  to  do.  These  are  our  most  pressing  technological  needs  in  the  percussion  area  here.

Secondary  Activities    1. Committee  Service.  Served  on  various  departmental,  college,  and  university  committees.

At  an  international  level,  I  have  served  on  the  Percussive  Arts  Society  Drumset  Committee  since  1999.

2. Participated  in  events  for  various  regional  arts  and  community  organizations  such  as  the  Cleveland  Orchestra,  Playhouse  Square  Foundation  of  Cleveland,  United  Way,  Breast  Cancer  Awareness  Organization  of  Mahoning  County,  Percussive  Arts  Society  Ohio  Chapter,  Mahoning  County  Board  of  Health,  Akron  Dance  Institute,  Ohio  Music  Education  Association,  Lake  Erie  College,  Baldwin-‐Wallace  University,  University  of  Illinois,  Eastern  Illinois  University,  YSU  SMARTS  Educational  Outreach  Program,  YSU  Afro-‐Cuban  Arts  Festival,  YSU  Arts  Festival,  YSU  Summer  Jazz  Camp,  University  of  Akron  Jazz  Studies  Department,  Cleveland  Composers  Guild,  and  more.

Primary  Service  Activities:  Faculty  Advisor,  Youngstown  Percussion  Collective,  2005-‐present.

o My  students  and  I  founded  YPC  in  2002.  It  is  a  vibrant  student  organization  open  to  any  YSU  student  or  alum.  My  YPC  related  activities  are  balanced  between  scholarship,  teaching,  and  service.

o I  attend  organizational  meetings,  assist  with  selection  and  rehearsal  of  repertoire,  and  oversee  guest  artist  bookings,  commissions,  and  fundraising  efforts.

o Instructional  Literature  Upon  my  arrival  in  1996,  the  Dana  percussion  ensemble  catalog  contained  only  about  a  dozen  pieces  I  deemed  worthy  of  performance  by  our  students.     Most  of  our  solo  and  ensemble  literature  is  relatively  recent,  since  1960,  and  we

cannot  perform  much  of  it  here  simply  because  we  do  not  own  it.     From  1996-‐2000  Chairs  Edwards  and  Perkins  annually  allocated  approximately

$200  for  percussion  ensemble  music,  which  provided  enough  music  for  one-‐half  concert  per  year.

We  presently  receive  no  annual  allocation  to  purchase  new  literature.  We  have  since  2002,  however,  purchased  some  music  on  a  sporadic  basis.

In  order  to  present  the  repertoire  we  have  performed,  I  personally  purchased  numerous  scores  and  parts  for  our  Percussion  Ensemble  course  needs.  Unfortunately,  Dana  does  not  own  these  works.

An  annual  allocation  of  $600  would  help  us  build  a  quality  percussion  library.

Professional  Endorsements/Fundraising:  My  professional  endorsement  relationships  have  provided  YSU  free  and  highly  discounted  (typically  60-‐70%  off  list  price)  instruments;  total  value  exceeds  $100,000.  These  endorsements  also  provide  access  to  corporate  guest  artist  rosters,  partial  or  full  coverage  of  their  performance  and  clinic  fees,  and  publicity  in  their  corporate  websites  and  print  materials.

o Avedis Zildjian Cymbal Corporation, Boston, Massachusetts, 1997-present. • Contract provides my personal cymbals free. • Contract provides all YSU cymbals free (drumset, symphonic, and marching) at no charge.

Value exceeds $50,000.   • Visited  Zildjian  Factory  in  Boston  to  select  new  instruments:  1998, 2002, 2008, and 2012.

o ProMark Corporation, Houston, Texas, 1997-present. • Contract  provides  me  considerable  complimentary  mallets  and  sticks.  • Contract  provides  60%  price  reduction  on  mallets  for  the  YSU  Percussion  Methods

Classes.    • Negotiated  $1000  annual  endorsement  contract  with  ProMark  Inc.  for  drumsticks

and  mallets  for  the  Marching  Pride.  Brandt  Payne  and  I  co-‐signed  this  contract  8/5/10.  Funds  not  used  by  the  Pride  may  be  used  to  purchase  symphonic  mallets  for  Dana.

o Remo Corporation, Valencia, California, 1999-present. • Provide occasional free drumheads and drumheads at 70% off list price. • Provided one drumset for YSU at 70% off list price. • Remo assisted YSU in securing drum circle instruments for the SMARTS program at a

discount of 60%. The value is over $25,000. • Negotiated  artist  endorsement  contract,  60%  discount,  for  the  Marching  Pride  on

Remo  Drumhead  Purchases  via  my  artist  endorsement  contract.  This  saves  YSU  about  $1000  per  year  in  drumhead  expenses.  Contract  agreed  upon  between  Glenn  Schaft  and  Bruce  Jacoby  at  Remo  Inc.,  8/5/10.

o Dynasty Corporation, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, 2006-present. Dynasty has provided YSU a complete set of marching percussion drumline gear free of charge. The value exceeds $12,000.

o Black Swamp Percussion. Zeeland, Michigan, 2006-present. Provided free mallets, tambourine, triangle, and 50% off concert snare drum. Value exceeds $1000.

o GMS Drums, Long Island, New York, 1998-2006. GMS contract provided a drumset for YSU at a 50% price reduction; value exceeds $3000.

o Attack Drumheads, Universal Percussion Corporation, Columbiana, Ohio, 1998-99. Provided YSU and myself free drumheads. Value exceeded $2000.

o Hosted  Percussive  Arts  Society  –  Ohio  Chapter  -‐  Ohio  Day  of  Percussion  at  YSU,  5/6/06.    • An  annual  Day  of  Percussion  has  been  held  at  various  universities  since  the  early  1980’s,

but  this  was  the  first  at  YSU.  To  date,  this  was  the  largest  and  most  comprehensive  percussion  education  event  in  northeastern  Ohio  history.

• This  event  cost  over  $11,000  to  produce.  I  solicited  sponsors  including  percussion  manufacturers,  music  retailers,  restaurants,  private  donors,  and  raised  funds  from  the  percussion  manufacturing  industry;  in  all,  $7000  of  artist  support  was  provided  by  thirteen  corporations.  WYSU  radio  provided  25  PSA’s.  I  received  a  $2000  grant  from  the  Ohio  Percussive  Arts  Society  Chapter  and  successfully  helped  my  students  apply  for  a  $2000  grant  from  YSU  Student  Government.  We  sent  mailers  to  over  2500  schools,  OH-‐PAS  members,  individuals,  music  stores,  etc.  We  charged  a  $5  admission  fee  to  recoup  some  costs.  YSU  provided  facilities,  funding  for  the  mailer  printing  and  postage,  press  release  services,  and  several  miscellaneous  items.

• I  collaborated  with  the  Youngstown  Percussion  Collective  and  the  Ohio  Chapter  of  PAS  to
