Synopsis of CV

I am an experienced Structural Biologist aiming at correlating protein function with the

three-dimensional structure, and combining expertise in molecular biology,

biochemistry, enzymology and X-ray crystallography.

I have graduated in Biochemistry at the University of Coimbra in 1995 and completed a

PhD degree in Biochemistry at the “Universidade Nova de Lisboa” in 2003. Until now,

I have published 28 papers in international peer reviewed journals with an accumulated

impact factor of 74.9, 442 citations and an h-index of 13.4, and I have written 2 book

chapters. 17 of the 28 papers were published independently from my PhD supervisors

and 8 as corresponding author. Since September 2008 I have been an Auxiliary

Researcher in the Structure Genomics Group, at ITQB, where I coordinate my own

research projects (1 project as PI and 4 as collaborator; accumulated value of 158000

Euros) and have my own students (2 PhD students, 1 Post-Doc, 1 research student and 2

Diploma students). Since my graduation I completed successfully the supervision of a

Masters student, 2 research students and 4 Diploma students. Since 2005 I have also

been involved in the PhD program at ITQB where I lecture a class entitled “X-ray

Crystallography of Small and Large Molecules”. Since 2003 I have also been the Head

of the small molecule X-ray crystallography service at Instituto de Tecnologia Química

e Biológica (ITQB).

Academic degrees:

2003 - Ph.D. in Biochemistry defended in July of 2003 at Instituto de Tecnologia

Química e Biológica, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (ITQB-UNL), Portugal. Thesis title:

“Structural studies of the tetrahaem cytochrome c3 and nine haem cytochrome c from

Desulfovibrio desulfuricans ATCC 27774 in the oxidised and reduced state. Correlation

with cooperativity effects”. This work was developed at the Crystallography laboratory

at ITQB, under the supervision of Professor Maria Arménia Carrondo and Doutor Pedro

Matias.

1995 - Licenciatura in Biochemistry at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da

Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal. Diploma thesis title: “Estrutura Terciária das

Proteínas: Estudo das Correlações entre a Sequência de Aminoácidos e a Organização

Espacial da Cadeia Peptidica”. This work was developed at the Instituto Gulbenkian the

Ciência, Oeiras, Portugal, under the supervision of Prof. Kelo Correia da Silva.

Crystallography Unit, Structural Genomics Laboratory, at Instituto de Tecnologia

Química e Biológica, Unversidade Nova de Lisboa.

- September 2003 to present day - Head of the small molecule X-ray crystallography

service at Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica.

2006 to 2008: Research Associate at the Protein Crystallography Laboratory at Instituto

de Tecnologia Química e Biológica.

collaboration with Prof. Peter Lindley.
