  • 3 SPEAK Tell us what did you do or are you thinking of doing in order to get a media job. THE MECHANICS OF GETTING A MEDIA JOB read the following text, get the main

ideas, the words related both to the job chapter and journalism, and then compare thesituation in UK with the situation in Romania.

If you are still convinced, after reading of the agonies and extasies of a career in journalism, that youwant to break in, its never too soon to take that first step up the ladder. Employers are looking for long-standingcommitment and proven-aptitude even from first-time applicants these days. From speaking to a variety ofeditors working in different media, it is clear that there are typical characteristics which they look for, rangingfrom good writing ability to a positive attitude. At the same time, they are looking for a spark of individualitythat makes you stand out from other candidates who have identical skills to you.

It sounds a clich, but there is no one way in to journalism. But the adjectives which characterize mostwould-be reportersjob hunting are persistence, determination, patience, dedication, and, most of all, luck. Thisbook cannot help you with the last factor on that list, but it can give you the experience of others and a fewpointers to help you make that break. So whether you are hunting for your first job, or hoping for a spell of workexperience, read on.

    BEFORE YOU EVEN CONSIDER APPLYING..

As in just about every profession today, thousands are competing for fewer jobs in jourrnalism, so it isessential that potential employees know how to shine. Many people are well-qualified to become journalists, butas any editor will tell you, it takes more than paper qualifications to land that sought-after job.

It takes determination, commitment, stamina, a spark of individuality and a good eye for a story tomake an edtor take a second glance. In the process of writing this book, dozens of editors, managers andreporters were interviewed and asked for their advice on what makes a good journalist. The answer was clear. No matter how much technology progresses and no matter how fircely progressive industry becomes, there arestill basic qualities which every journalist must have whatever medium they hope to work within.

In an industry which is intended to present information factually and objectively, there is no doubtsubjectivity reigns on the part of editors and employers over what sort of person they would like to take on.Rightly or wrongly, certain characteristics arise again and again. Typically, these include having a degree, beingaged under 25 and single for a first job with personality traits such as confidence and authority. But each editorwas keen to stress there are exceptions to the rule in every newsroom and that it is basically down to how wellthe prospective journalist performs at interview. For instance, one regional evening newspaper employs a formerfootballer who suffered an injury and decided to move into the news. In another example, a national televisionnews producer with no formal journalistic training worked her way up from being a receptionst at a local radiostation. It can be done and any editor will tell you that if you are determined enough and willing to learn, you canbreak your way in, but it takes time, plenty of knocks along the way and a great deal of patience and motivationwhen the going gets rough.

Of the editors interviewed, these are the main attributes that most of them cited:1. You must be able to present information clearly and simply with spotless spelling,

punctuation and grammar.2. You must have an unparalleled interest in all aspects of humanity and have a

fascination for people in all walks of life and their lives. You should be able to exhibit agenuine interest in current affairs.

    3. You must be sensible and have sound judgement, which is often assessed atinterview by asking you how you would respond in a specific situation, and be able to writebalanced copy objectively.

    4. You must be prepared to devote your life to the pursuit of news, work veryunsociable hours and be prepared to subordinate your private life to journalism.

    5. You have to be able to work fast and accurately with accute attention to detail.6. You have to be a good communicator and listener but assertive enough to refuse to

take no for an answer.7. You must be able to face moral dilemmas and be prepared to conform to editorial

demands even if it is against your own wishes or principles.

  • 48. Lastly, and perhaps, most importantly, you should have a healthy disrespect forauthority and question everything that is considered common sense.(Inside Journalism, Sarah Niblock, Blueprint, London, 1996)
