CURSILLO PERTH NEWSLETTER
August 2016
After we experience our first Cursillo we are highly motivated to serve our Lord and some
of us have great plans that in a few short weeks evaporate. We need to work
together and encourage each other in order that our brothers and sisters may share the
same experience that we have had. Whilst we live in a busy and challenging world with
change occurring every day, we must go back to the Cursillo grass roots and do the work
that our Lord and Saviour would have us do.
When you read the Kairos article on page 2, I believe that this is one area where we can
“Walk the walk” .
Graeme.

Kairos Outside for Women (KOW) – Perth
Preparation for the Kairos Outside for Women Weekend, to be held 9-11 September is well underway. The support and
encouragement we received from the Cursillo community has been touching and very much appreciated, you have shown Christ’s love – thank you.
We still have a way to go before the actual Kairos Outside for Women weekend, and we are asking if you would like to help out or be involved in any of the following ways by:
Spreading the word to potential Guests who will benefit from attending the Kairos Outside weekend: JULY-AUGUST
As you can imagine, it is very difficult to connect with ladies who has been or going through the trauma of having someone in
prison. Mostly this is kept secret as they carry the burden, shame and perhaps guilt. You can help by promoting Kairos Outside at your church, support groups, community events or through personal contact. The Kairos Outside for Women weekend is
9-11 September, it is free and transport is provided. If you know someone who would like to attend they can email kow-
[email protected] or complete an enquiry form . Email [email protected] if you would like an information brochure and registration form sent to you. We need to confirm the number of Guests attending the weekend by 25 August 2016.
Get the kids to colour in Kairos posters: JULY-AUGUST
Each Kairos Outside Weekend has a themed poster. These posters are coloured in and used to decorate the conference room.
Some of the posters are also handed to the Guests as Agape gifts. Email [email protected] if you would like colouring-in posters sent to you. Once completed, it can be posted to PO Box 1359, Joondalup WA 6919. This is a great activity for Sunday
school kids. Please ensure we get the colored posters by 25 August 2016

When Graeme asked me to give some background about myself as a past member of the secretariat it was a pleasure to do so. Hi my name is Dora Arney for those that know me you know how passionate I am about the love of Jesus, my family, friends, community, gardening (love of flowers), facilitating groups and Cursillo. The Cursillo Weekend is such a gift that is given in Godly love by so many, so that others can have this experience of journeying together in Christ. As they say at Cursillo make a friend - be a friend - bring a friend to Christ.
During my 35 year Journey as a Christian I have had an awareness of the importance of journeying with others in sharing the love of Jesus, in the growing and stretching of our faith. This happens in many ways, our Sunday Church Services, experience of a Cursillo weekend, knowing the word of God, however being in fellowship with a group that encourages you on this Christian journey we call the fourth day is truly a transforming place to be. I am very blessed to be married to Mark Arney and we have raised five beautiful children together. Mark is an Anglican Priest so we had the privilege of being at St Thomas Willagee/Kardinya for 7 years such a faithful parish especially in giving to outreach ministry. It is while at St Thomas I had my Cursillo journey I was so embraced and loved over that weekend making new friends in Christ. At the Parish we formed a fourth day group I saw the transformation this weekly gathering made in my life and the life of others, I joined the secretariat a very giving group of people who are very passionate about Cursillo. Since leaving St Thomas, as Mark heard the call to Prison Chaplaincy, I took on the importance of having a fourth day group to journey with and we have our meetings every week at St David’s Applecross, there we journey in the Companions in Christ material. Cursillo gives us so many opportunities to gather together beyond the 3 days there are the Ultreya’s, being on team for a Cursillo, fellowship in a fourth day group, accepting a Secretariat position, attending a Cursillo way Session and I am sure many other ways to be together as Christians. I have been involved in a few of these myself and have found in the giving you truly receive. The Cursillo Way came out of a strong desire that Paul Doyle (Diocesan Lay Director) and I had to encourage Parishes to form fourth day groups. I was so committed to facilitating groups I went and studied a Cert IV in Relationship education and Group facilitation. I have been blessed to be able to offer “The Cursillo Way” training sessions throughout this year with each session including: Prayer, a time of singing, practise of holy listening, communication and how to form a group. Love and Prayer Dora Arney

CURSILLO NATIONAL SECRETARIAT 2016
Cursillo National Secretariat for this year was held in Tasmania Ulverstone on June 10th, 11th and 12th. We
stayed at Camp Clayton which had some great accommodation along with great food and a very peaceful
atmosphere, we were certainly well catered for. Perth was well represented with Sharon Zuddiam and
Paul Doyle attending as Perth delegates and Leanne Doyle attending as National Secretary. It was very
cold and wet with a great time of gathering and fellowship. There was representation from 12 Diocese
from across Australia.
Just a few highlights throughout the weekend were reports from each Diocese which were discussed in
groups, there was some show and tell shared and a workshop on “Creating a Condensed Program” for a
three-day Cursillo weekend. The Anglican Cursillo Movement Australia Manual (ACMA) focus was on the
Pre Cursillo , The Three Day Weekend and The Post Cursillo.
The next National Cursillo secretariat and gathering will be in May 2017 in Busselton.

Perth Cursillo Residential Weekend – Day of Deeper Understanding
2016
Held at Swanleigh Conference Centre
On a wet and windy weekend in May a group of Cursillistas braved the weather and came
together in fellowship and faith to share Christs love, catch up with old friends and past
Cursillistas (some from 20 years or so ago) and find ways of pursuing the Cursillo method into action. A lot of laughs were had along with prayer, song and food…….
Bless the Lord my soul, and bless His Holy name, Bless the Lord my soul, Who leads me into
life. (Compline closing off a wonderful day of Cursillo sharing, laughs and love. 5

WHO AND HOW DO I CONTACT?
Prayer
So much has been written about prayer. And
yet talking to the One who makes sense of our
lives, and in whom we ‘live and move and
have our being’ (Acts 17:28) is really simple.
Various writings abound with advice about ‘how to do it’, and can be confusing. Gerard
Hughes’ thought “Pray as you can, not as you
can’t”, is wonderfully freeing. It means we can
be honest in and with God about who we are
- who knows each of us better than we know our self anyway. And more importantly,
beyond our understanding, still loves each
one of us. God L-O-V-E, loves us. Despite
ourselves. All we need do is surrender to God’s embrace.
After Jesus had been praying, one of his
disciples asked him to teach them how to pray
(Luke 11:1-4 ; MaB 6: 9-11). The ‘Our Father’ which we received we say often, since
it is part of our worship in Morning and
Evening prayer and the Eucharist (APBA). One
of the problems of familiarity is that it can slip
by, mouthed, but not come from the heart. A way of retrieving this gift from Jesus is to say
the words mindfully, not fast, offering oneself
to God as a living sacrifice, as we say in the
Eucharist. Taking time to open ourselves to
God in this prayer is life-giving. And this
opening is following Jesus’ practice.
There is no formula for private prayer. God
alone teaches us how to pray - we just need to
make ourselves available. Be still - for the presence of the Lord is all around us.
